United Nations Disaster Assessment and Coordination (UNDAC) The United Nations Disaster Assessment and Coordination (UNDAC) team is part of the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) and the international emergency response system for sudden-onset emergencies. UNDAC was created in 1993. It is designed to help the United Nations and governments of disaster-affected countries during the first phase of a sudden-onset emergency. UNDAC, as a tool of OCHA, also assists in the coordination of incoming international relief at national level and/or at the site of the emergency. by disaster type 73 22 14 2015 Cyclones, typhoons and hurricanes Earthquakes, Tsunamis 5 4 Environmental & man-made emergencies 23 23 Nepal: Earthquake 2015 23 Philippines: Typhoon Haiyan 2013 26 Indian Ocean: Earthquake and Tsunami 2004* 45 Haiti: Earthquake 2010** 45 48 Complex emergencies 1,378 by number of staff deployed Pakistan: Earthquake 2005 255 5 largest deployments Number of UNDAC missions 23 Response prepardness Floods and land/mudslides Volcanic eruption Drought UNDAC deployments by gender and year Afghanistan Afghanistan earhquake earthquake Total by gender: Hurricane Hurricane Mitch Mitch 228 (19%) (36%) 255 1,062(81%) 1,123 (64%) 74 4% Female team members deployed 56 40 5 100% 22 9% 5% 91% 95% 90 25% 42 12% 12% 89 22% 59 61 12% 20% 98% 96% 87% 88% 18% 88% 78% 28% 37% 42 88% 81 15% 12% 75% 92 87 29 100% Guatemala earthquake 97 20% 20% 61 22 Hurricane Pakistan Pakistan Hurricane AnnaAnna floods floods 87 13% 13% Tropical storm Bopha 22% Male team members deployed 2% Bolivia Bolivia Haiti Haiti earthquake floodsfloods earthquake 132 80% 80% 80% 78% 3,266 Total number of deployment days 82% 85% 38 38 36 29% 29% 15% 71% 71% 85% 64% 72% Emergencies responded to and deployment days by year Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami Total emergencies: 255 17 1,746 10 8 2 335 62 1993 1994 9 7 11 1,044 19 14 1,785 12 1,580 1,013 11 11 838 823 635 12 511 16 1,720 15 14 11 1,526 1,326 1,268 958 6 11 633 1,756 12 13 622 8 591 1996 1997 1998 1999 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009 2010 *includes Indonesia, Maldives, Seychelles, Sri Lanka and Thailand deployments. **includes Dominican Republic deployment. During that time, UNDAC recorded the most emergencies responded to (20 in 2004), the highest number of deployment days (3,266 in 2005) and the largest single emergencies by staff deployed (the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami, and the 2005 Pakistan earthquake). Most missions occurred in the Americas (32 per cent), then in Asia (23 per cent), Africa (19 per cent), the Middle East and North Africa (11 per cent), the Pacific (8 per cent), Europe (5 per cent) and Central Asia (2 per cent).
