United Nations Disaster Assessment and Coordination (UNDAC)
The United Nations Disaster Assessment and Coordination (UNDAC) team is part of the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian
Affairs (OCHA) and the international emergency response system for sudden-onset emergencies. UNDAC was created in 1993. It is
designed to help the United Nations and governments of disaster-affected countries during the first phase of a sudden-onset emergency. UNDAC, as a tool of OCHA, also assists in the coordination of incoming international relief at national level and/or at the site of the
emergency.

United Nations Disaster Assessment and Coordination (UNDAC)
The 2004/2005 period was the busiest in UNDAC’s history.
During that time, UNDAC recorded the most emergencies
responded to (20 in 2004), the highest number of deployment
days (3,266 in 2005) and the largest single emergencies by staff
deployed (the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami, and
the 2005 Pakistan earthquake).
Most missions occurred in the Americas (32 per cent), then in Asia
(23 per cent), Africa (19 per cent), the Middle East and North
Africa (11 per cent), the Pacific (8 per cent), Europe (5 per cent)
and Central Asia (2 per cent).
