PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE BY DOW LAWSON, LOWELL PRINCIPAL
Lowell Families,
It’s hard to believe that we are already in the month of May. Testing is coming up for our 3rd, 4th,
and 5th graders and our TK through 2nd graders are doing fantastic things in their classrooms. This
is the time of year that goes by so quickly. Whether you have a 5th grader that is promoting, or a
kinder student getting ready to move into 1st grade, the time moves incredibly fast. Take time to
take in every moment of the next month and a half, these moments are as much for us as parents
as they are for our little ones.
There is a lot coming our way over the next few weeks, please take a look at our PTA calendar and
join us for as many events as you can.
Sincerely,
Lester “Dow” Lawson
Principal
PTA PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE BY LEEANNA IZUEL, LOWELL PTA PRESIDENT
“It matters not what someone is born, but what they grow up to be.”
- Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, J.K. Rowling
Dear Lowell Families,
With our Spring Break behind us, we’re in the home stretch of another school year! But even
though less than two months remain in this school year, we have so many great activities left to
enjoy with our Sea Stars in May and June, including some very beloved Lowell traditions!
The first week in May, our friends at George’s Greek Café have once again extended their
generosity by hosting a Dining for Dollars event on May 4th. The next day is Lowell Night with the
Dirtbags -- have fun at the local ball field with our Lowell community as Cal State Long Beach faces
off against Cal Poly at Blair Field (fireworks included!). Then, our own Mr. B sponsors the Annual
Lowell Chess Tournament on Saturday, May 6.

.
Another great community event you won’t want to miss happens on Friday, May 13 -- join your
Lowell friends on the playground starting at 6:00 p.m. for a Pizza and Movie night featuring Mr.
Peabody & Sherman. The very next day, several of our Lowell students will be presenting their
projects at the LBUSD Science Fair, which will be held at Cabrillo High School (the morning of
Saturday, May 14).
Many of our talented Lowell students will be on stage this month for TKTC’s Spring productions:
Alice Rocks In Wonderland will be presented on May 18, 19, and 20, while The Jungle Book cast
performs on May 26 and 27.
Another can’t miss event is Lowell’s annual Open House on May 25. Come see the class projects
your children have been working on over the year, say “Hi” to teachers from previous years, and
take an opportunity to meet the faculty who may be teaching your children next year.
The last three day weekend of the year is Memorial Day – enjoy your time off with family and
friends!
And that’s just in May! In June, you can look forward to the Lowell Country Fair Spring Carnival on
June 3, Teacher Appreciation Week from June 5-9, another Dining for Dollars event (this one at
CPK), and our final PTA Meeting of the school year, where we will making plans for next year!
See you at school!

SPRING AUCTION
A big thanks to Tesha Gluhak, Keli Urbano and the Auction Committee who put together a great
party. Also a big thank you to the Lowell community who partied the night away and also raised
money for classroom technology. Over $23,000 was raised to buy Chromebooks, with $53,000
raised in total, after expenses. Everybody attending not only got into the spirit of giving but also got
into some truly inspired throwback fashions. It’s amazing that we all kept so many outfits from the
‘80s and even more amazing that we could still fit into them. Fortunately, an editorial decision was
made to not print photos from the event. As they say, “ya had to be there.”
As Tesha and the Auction Committee can attest, a lot of hard work goes in to making the Spring
Auction a fun and successful event. Like so many of our PTA events, it is truly a team effort. If you
attended you may have seen many of the volunteers at the event, but many more worked behind
the scenes. At the risk of leaving anyone out, we would like to thank Tesha Gluhak, Keli Urbano,
Jen Abe, Becky Matta and Margaret Migliazza, among many others who donated their time, effort
and help up fundraise!
Thanks also to Dan D’sa, the Director of The Grand and a Lowell dad, and the staff of The Grand
for going above and beyond in helping make the event a success. And finally, a big shout out to
Richard Blade for keeping the ‘80s real!
If you want to join in the fun next year and be part of the 2017-18 Spring Auction committee, email
our Ways team, Tracy Kollin and Anne Smith, at [email protected]. Planning will start early
next year so it is not too early to sign up to help!

CHESS CLUB TOURNAMENT
On Saturday, May 6, the Lowell Chess Club will be sponsoring a chess
tournament which is open to any Lowell student (not only to members of
the Chess Club). This tournament is not a workshop and so is only for
Lowell students who already know how to play chess. Each participant will
need to complete a total of four games which will be spread out over the
course of the day (9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., approximately); the first two
games will occur before lunch and the last two games and the awards
ceremony will happening after the lunch break. No one should plan on
leaving early; you either play in all four games or you play in none of them. Participants should plan
to arrive at Lowell between 8:30 a.m. and 8:45 a.m., (not before), both for check-in and so that they
may hear the rules and procedures for the tournament which will be reviewed from 8:45 a.m. to
9:00 a.m.. The first game will begin promptly at 9:00 a.m.. Students who are NOT members of the
Lowell Chess Club will be required to pay a registration fee of $5. All members of the Lowell Chess
Club do not need to pay any registration fees.
*** On the day of the tournament, no student may simply be dropped off at Lowell. While parents
may make arrangements to share the time with other parents, at no time during the tournament is a
student allowed to be at Lowell without some designated adult being responsible, and physically at
Lowell, for that student. Parents are responsible for the supervision and safety of their own
children during the course of the tournament.
On Wednesday, May 17, we will be holding the 2017 Awards Ceremony for the Chess Club. The
ceremony will take place in the Auditorium starting at 7:00 p.m.

MEET THE MASTERS
.
“A painter should begin every canvas with a wash of black, because all things in nature are dark
except where exposed by the light.”
Leonardo Da Vinci
Hello Lowell Parents!!
We hope that you and your children enjoyed learning about the fourth artist, Faith Ringgold. One
of our only living artists that we have learned about. Thank you again to all of you volunteer parents
for teaching and helping in the classrooms.
If you haven’t had a chance to see the works on display in the Main Entry hallway, please try to do
so. The work has been amazing (Artist: Grant Wood) and the display sums it up best! Beautiful
job - thank you, Mieke!
Our last artist will be Leonardo Da Vinci.
Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) was a painter, architect, inventor, and student of all things
scientific. He was born outside Vinci, which lies high up on Mount Albano, in the valley of the Arno
River, near the city of Florence. Florence was an independent republic and commercial center at
the time of his birth. He was the son of Ser Pierro da Vinci, who was a legal specialist, and a
peasant girl named Caterina. He was considered an “illegitimate” son because they were not
married. His father married into a wealthy family and he went to live with his grandparents. Later
he lived with his father’s family and they didn’t conceal his birth and welcomed his addition to the
family.
As a child, he was very smart and was very quick at arithmetic and music. He learned the lyre and
had a wonderful singing voice, and quickly went to further develop his talents with a tutor. At age
17, he went to become an apprentice of painting under the instruction of Andrea del Verrochio, in
Florence, who was an artist, skilled craftsmen, goldsmith, sculptor and painter. He started to use
his science to enhance his paintings. He studied and sketched rock formations, caves and fossils.
He had very few close friends during his life, even though he was very kind and sympathetic. Later,
May 2017
Lowell Log
Page 10
.
during his apprenticeship, he started to find his niche at inventing machines like the helicopter,
diving suit, and submarine. After he finished his education, he stayed for a short time assisting
Andrea del Verrochio.
From 1478 to 1482, he obtained his own studio. After that, he was offered the job of court artist for
Lodvico Sforza, the Duke of Milan. He took it and lived in beautiful Milan for 17 years. There, he
had a great variety of jobs, including designing artillery and planning river system diversions for the
city. In Milan, he really started to dive into the field of science and learn a lot. Go to the science
section of the library to learn more!
Toward the end of his life, in about 1508, King Louis XII of France asked Da Vinci to accompany
him to Milan, and he went willingly. There, he stayed working on anatomy and other fields until
1512, when the French lost Milan. He then had to go to Rome. There, he stayed until his life was
finished. He was very good friends with Guiliano de’ Medici, brother of the Duke, and he was well
housed and treated very kindly. Sadly, while in the bliss of the Renaissance, his health started to
fail. In March of 1516, Guiliano died, and Leonardo was left alone in the world, practically deserted.
Not many years thereafter, on May 2, 1519, the mind of the Renaissance, Leonardo da Vinci, died.
His natural genius crossed so many disciplines that he epitomized the term “Renaissance man.”
Today he remains best known for his art, including two paintings that remain among the world’s
most famous and admired: Mona Lisa and The Last Supper. Art, Da Vinci believed, was
indisputably connected with science and nature. Largely self-educated, he filled dozens of secret
notebooks with inventions, observations and theories about pursuits from aeronautics to anatomy.
We would like to extend our BIGGEST THANK YOUS to all the MTM volunteer parents, both
leaders and helpers. If you are teaching Leonardo Da Vinci for your class, please save the date
of May 8th for the 2:35 p.m. to 3:05 p.m. assembly in the Auditorium followed by training at 3:15
p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Library.
Please note that Lowell students may quietly reside in the Library while volunteers receive
instruction; non-students may not attend per school guidelines. In the meantime, if you have any
questions, please call Mieke Dumont at (310) 729-6033, and Adam Wheeler at (310) 487-1102.

PTA FAQs
(Frequently Asked Questions)
In an effort to keep our members informed and in-the-know, we are continuing the column in our monthly Lowell
Log: PTA FAQs. If you have any questions, or if there is some information you would like to see in a future Lowell
Log, please email Leeanna Izuel, PTA President, at [email protected].
Q: How is leadership of the PTA selected? Who’s going to be leading the PTA next year?
A: The Board of the PTA voted on by the members. A slate of candidates is proposed by a
Nominating Committee which is comprised of the Parliamentarian and members of the PTA. The
Committee identifies potential board members and finds out whether the individuals are
interested in running for office. Although a slate is proposed by the committee, anyone can be
nominated prior to the election. The Board is July 1st to June 30th.
The 2017-18 Board was elected at our March meeting, and will start their duties on July 1. They

Box Tops For Education
Lowell PTA continues to raise funds by collecting and redeeming Box
Tops For Education that are found on hundreds of your favorite products
– from groceries to school supplies to underwear! During the 2015-16
school year, we earned over $3,000 with Box Tops. With over 750
students at Lowell, we certainly can earn more this year!
Each Box Top is worth 10 cents to our school, so check all boxes and
wrappers before you put them in the recycling bin. New products are constantly being
added and as of press time include: Avery, Hefty, Betty Crocker, Yoplait, Scott, Hamburger
Helper, Green Giant, Land O Lakes, Ziploc, Hanes and more!! Cut out the Box Tops with
the expiration date intact, and send them in to your child’s teacher. (Keeping a snack size
baggie and scissors in a kitchen drawer makes it easy to collect them!) Please check
expiration dates before turning in the Box Tops – those dates really do matter. Ask
neighbors and relatives to save box tops for our school, too!
Are you thinking that a 10 cent Box Top isn’t worth finding, cutting out and turning in?
Think again: Lowell PTA has earned over $10,000 since 2004 – one 10 cent Box Top at a
time!
