‘Rassembler’
Connaught Brick and Stone Reclamation Project
Stage 2, Part 2: Proposal Final Submission

Concept Statement
Rassembler means to gather. As a community it is integral that we create spaces that promote coming
together. It is in these spaces that we can join together to share our views and our values, to build
connections between us and our neighbours, and to celebrate our cultures and our community.
‘Rassembler’ is a welcoming and vibrant place for neighbours and visitors to gather at the Albert Street
gateway of Cathedral Village. We envision creating a delightful and inviting place that encourages
people to sit and meet with their neighbours. We propose creating a sculptural raised planter in the
shape of the stone people from the former Connaught School gymnasium frieze. We chose to reference
the stone people because we see this form as an expression of the strong sense of community and
pride that is shared by the residents of Cathedral Village.

Connaught School Gymnasium 'Stone People'
The foundation of the planter walls will be constructed of the concrete retaining wall blocks that exist
currently on the project site. The reclaimed red brick from the school will then be used as facing material
for the Rassembler planter. The large tyndal stone blocks will be incorporated into the walls of the planter
as both sculptural elements and functional seating blocks. The curvilinear form of the raised planter will
require the advice of a qualified masonry specialist. Their expertise will ensure the planter will be both
an elegant sculptural form, and a strong and robust public amenity that can be enjoyed by the
neighbourhood for years to come. Jeannie Mah's ceramic plaque, signifying the origins of the materials,
will be placed in a prominent location on the raised planter wall for passersby to read.
In the center of the raised planter will be a grand shade tree. The lush oxygen-giving tree is meant to
symbolize the energy and spirit of the people of Cathedral Village. Growing at the base of the tree will
be a mixture of colourful shrubs, perennials and annuals that change with the seasons, adding another
dynamic layer to the space. To define the extent of the plaza and to further reference the iconic materials
of Connaught School, we propose that the striking red bricks of the exterior of the school be used as a
paving surface around the planter.
Moving forward, we would like to explore the possibility of solar lighting. We believe that lighting would
gracefully illuminate the brick and stone materials of Connaught School while also enhancing the
grandeur of the symbolic tree.
