February 2017 Improving, enhancing, and promoting arts education in Florida! In this Issue Message from FAAE President FAAE STAR Program Arts Integration Symposium FAAE Summit: Arts for All: Celebrating the Art of Florida Membership Discount Special Information from Partners Greetings FAAE Members, As I write this, many in the arts education community are dealing with uncertainty and concern for the future of arts education. As the political machinery begins to turn in Washington, various reports remind us to be diligent about our advocacy efforts. Suffice it to say we should be careful not to get complacent and therefore assume that the arts will always remain a vital part of a student’s well-rounded education. We know the value of the arts – value that is supported by numerous studies in addition to our own (or our children’s) positive experience with art education. Now is the time for us to rise above wringing our hands and to remember the old adage: Think Global – Act Local. So take time to let your children’s schools know how much you appreciate them for giving students access to an arts-rich curriculum. Make it a point to seek out school-board members and praise or chastise them – depending on their level of support for arts education. Also be sure and thank your school’s or community’s art educators. They need to know that you find worth in what they do every day for our children. And finally, be an advocate anytime you have an “audience” for the power of arts education. Remind them (or tell them for the first time) how a rigorous arts-infused curriculum makes our students into critical thinkers, into problem-solvers, into the leaders and entrepreneurs of tomorrow. It can be very easy to get discouraged and to cower in fear over what tomorrow’s educational climate may look like. The more courageous thing to do is to cling to the hope that art inspires in us all and to be an advocate and an activist regarding your children’s education. Oh, and P.S. The lives of these particular people are spent trying to balance the challenge of expressing their artistic selves while pursuing their professions as public school educators. The STAR program is designed to honor and nourish the artist in the educator by providing five public school educators from Florida with the opportunity to pursue their artistic work in the inspiring environment of the prestigious Hermitage Artist Retreat. Three-week residencies will be offered to two visual artists, two writers (fiction/non-fiction/poetry/playwriting); and one composer. A Hermitage residency is a gift of time and space for artists to attend to their work. There is no requirement to produce. It is intensely personal time for concentration and a community of artists from different disciplines with which to share and learn. Artists are invited to seize the opportunity and find themselves more productive than at any other time in their creative lives. FAAE hosted the 2017 Arts Integration Symposium at Edison Park Creative and Expressive Arts School in Ft. Myers on February 11. Nearly 100 arts and non-arts teachers, school administrators, community arts organizations, teaching artists, and arts advocates attended. We wish to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Doug Santini and his local host committee for welcoming us and organizing a great day of professional development and networking. During the opening session with, our attendees were treated to an outstanding performance by the Edison Park Orff Ensemble. The students’ love for music shone through on their bright smiling faces. Their energetic, innovative, and fun performance was the perfect start to the day and a great reminder to us that our purpose is kids! The performance was followed by a Keynote Address from Dr. Sue Snyder. Her message on weaving arts integration and social emotional learning into the fabric of school communities was profound and thought-provoking. FAAE also wishes to thank the sixteen breakout session presenters who volunteered their time and expertise to the event. We’re also extremely grateful to the event sponsors: Florida Department of State’s Division of Cultural Affairs, Panther Printing, and Lee County Arts Alliance.
