Spokesman Retirement – Nov/Dec
2014 Newsletter:
Times are changing and so are our lives. The
Spokesman editor position is a BIG job and time
commitment!! Each year it is harder to find
someone with the spare time to take this giant
task on. Our current editor has stepped down
and HBC VP Jeff Hoch is now filling in to get the
Spokesman published. But the time has come
to discontinue the Spokesman publication
(electronic and hard copy) and our last issue will
be the Nov./ Dec. 2014 newsletter. After that
you must rely on our HBC website for
information and events.
For those renewing their memberships this year,
renewing of the Spokesman is no longer
available. Jeff will continue to be our editor
until that time. After that time and as of now,
all HBC event information can be accessed on
our HBC website at:
www.harrisburgbicycleclub.org.
For those of you who paid for a hard copy, after
2014, we are working on extending your
membership into the future.
Remember not all HBC rides are listed and you
must sign up to the ride distribution lists to
receive those notices.
If you are not receiving regular email
communications
from

verify that your correct email address is within

Williamsburg Trip - October 30 Nov 2, 2014: Deadline to register
has been extended to September
15:
For the first time in 2013, the Harrisburg Bicycle
sponsored a three day bicycling event in historic
Williamsburg, Virginia. Eighty HBC'ers attended
and judging from the feedback and comments
received it was a great success. We will once
again sponsor the event in 2014 from Thursday,
10/30 to Sunday, 11/2. Cue sheets for approximately 20 different ride
options are provided with distances ranging
from 3 miles to over 70 miles. A wide variety of
route options including many miles on
dedicated, paved bike trails make this event
suitable for the novice, casual rider and the
experienced long distance rider alike. You will
be free to lead a ride, follow along with another
leader or strike out on your own. Or you can just
relax and enjoy the food, history and shopping
that Williamsburg has to offer.
The cost for this event, which includes three
nights lodging, three hot breakfasts, Friday
dinner, three hospitality nights with wine, beer
and snacks and cue sheets for the ride is $210
per person, double occupancy.
The Registration deadline has been extended to
September 15th. Registration Complete event
details including a brochure and registration
form can be found on the HBC Williamsburg
Website at:

One of the “perks” Century volunteers receive
is a free picnic on Volunteer Day, Sunday Sept.
14. . The Century Committee recognizes that
the volunteer’s service may not allow them
enough time to ride during the Century event
on September 21, so we offer this Volunteer
Day to thank them and give them a chance to
ride. A free lunch is provided plus the
opportunity to ride the routes. Choose routes
of 25, 50, 75 or 100 miles.
During the lunch, committee members will be
available to answer questions and explain job
assignments. This is also a wonderful way to
get to know other HBC members and fellow
volunteers.
Cue sheets will be available as of 8:00 a.m. on
Sept. 14. Century volunteers can do the
route(s) of their choice but should plan to
return to LeTort Park by 1:00 p.m. for lunch.
There will be no sag support or rest stops
supplied on Volunteer Day. Volunteers will
also be asked to report any problems with
roads or cues on the routes that may create
problems for the Century riders.
Volunteers who do have time to ride the day
of the Century can register for the discounted
early bird fee of $20 no matter when they
register, including Sept. 21, the day of the
Century.

Advocacy Update:
Harrisburg and Hershey may both have Bike
Share programs in the near future, thanks to
efforts by Harrisburg Young Professionals
(HYP) and Penn State Hershey who are
seeking grants to fund the programs. Bicycle
South Central PA, a new advocacy group, is
assisting with the process.
What is bike share? Basically, Bike Share
allows people to borrow bikes on a shortterm basis to make brief trips. Usually found
in urban environments, Bike Share facilities
allow people to get to and from mass transit
stations, commercial areas, retail stores,
restaurants, and places of employment in an
easy, efficient and environmentally friendly
way.
How does it work? People join Bike Share
programs for a fee of about $75 per year and
then have unlimited use of the Bike Share
bicycles for short trips during that period.
Usually, trips of 30 minutes or less are free,
with small additional fees for longer trips. An
option to pay by trip is also offered. Bike
Share stations are conveniently located
throughout the community so people can pick
up bikes and drop them off as needed.
What are the benefits of Bike Share? Not
only is a Bike Share program an easy, efficient
and environmentally friendly form of
transportation, but it also enhances
community
connectivity,
promotes
a
sustainable culture based community and
improves regional economic development
The Spokesmanopportunities.
September 2014
How would I benefit from using a Bike
Share Program? As an example, let’s assume
you work in a downtown area where parking
is expensive and at a premium. A Bike Share
program would allow you to run errands,
attend meetings, or go out to lunch without
having to use your car. This would allow you
more flexibility with choosing transportation
alternatives such as riding the bus or
carpooling, thereby saving you money that
you would otherwise have to spend for fuel
and parking. If you do choose to drive your
own car downtown, you’ll still be able to use
Bike Share get around town without the
hassle of moving your car and finding a
parking space.
I already have a bike. Why would I care
about Bike Share? Bike Share programs
increase the number of bicycle riders in the
community which increases the interest in
making the roads safer for cyclists. For
example, within 7 weeks of the launch of New
York City’s Bike Share program, users had
logged over 1 million trips. And Boston
launched one of the first bike share systems in
the country, the New Balance Hubway system,
which has since grown to 130 stations and
more than 1100 bicycles. As a result, Boston
has added 82 miles of bike lanes and1500
bike racks and created one of the most
successful community bike programs in the
country.

40 Miles, Tour Pace(s) **
Ride Coordinator: Bill Pickering (H: 232-1326),

This ride is being planned as a ‘warm-down’
ride, meaning the pace will be at the touring
pace we expect to ride on Tour. It will keep any
rust from accumulating as we look forward to
starting for Cape May on Tuesday.
For this ride, we hope the six-packs will plan to
ride together. That way, the pack members can
get accustomed to riding together. We are
specifically asking each six-pack leader to be
present for this ride. Others who want to join us
to experience riding in a group are welcome as
well.
This ride presents an opportunity to get some
miles on your touring bike and to try your racks
and bags. You are encouraged to think of
yourself as being on tour for this ride – a dress
rehearsal.
Maps and cue sheets will be handed out at the
start. Plan to stay for lunch at a local eatery on
your return. If you have any questions, contact
Bill Pickering ( [email protected]).
Directions To Start: From Harrisburg, follow
