squares, and has several terms associated with it.
Ranks – they are the squares alternating in color
connected from left to right when seated at the board.
Files – they are the squares alternating in color connected
up and down the board when seated.
Diagonals – the angles created by the same color squares.

The pieces are setup exactly the same way each game.
-Start with the light square on the lower right side when seated at the board to orient the squares to the
proper colors
-Place the Queens on their own color.
-The Bishops guard the King and Queen
-The Knights guard the Rooks
