Electronic communication is changing
The internet allows people to communicate faster than ever and has become an important part
of daily life in most developed countries. Without it, life seems to stop but not everyone has
access to computers and the Internet, for example: people in less developed countries or the
older generation who have never had to use computers for school or work.
As technology improves, more devices to help us communicate are being developed. How we
communicate is changing too and we talk less to people and text more. Some people in the
communications industry believe that if given the choice of how to contact someone, more
people are choosing their phone and not their computer. Phones are cheaper than computers and
now have internet access and more functions than we know or have time to use. A separate
camera or personal stereo is no longer necessary. Today’s phones take pictures, play music,
book flights and hotels, and much more. They come with additional applications which allow
us to find out information very quickly. So, connecting with people through your phone is
definitely more practical for this day and age. Modern mobile phones provide us with all that
our computers do and more, at any time and anywhere.
There are of course disadvantages too and anyone who has lost their phone will tell you how
strange it feels. Some people are totally lost without them and feel they have no social life. But
as society becomes more of a phone-culture, a lot more will change. The next time you go out,
see how phones are changing our society, how we communicate and how we live. The world
might be getting smaller but it might also be that we are forgetting how we used to talk to each
other.

Celebrations of friends and friendship
Every year on the first Sunday of August, people around the world celebrate Friendship Day.
Popular presents for friends include flowers, chocolates and photos but the most popular one is
a friendship bracelet or band. On Friendship Day, friends call each other, chat on the internet,
send texts or e-cards to each other and if they can, they spend the day together.
This day was first celebrated in the USA in 1935, but it has become popular in many other
countries. People in Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay have a similar special occasion and on July
20 they celebrate Dia del Amigo (Friends’ Day). This celebration was started by an Argentine
called Enrique Febbrara. He believed that the moon landing by the American space rocket
Apollo 11 in 1969 united people all over the world and that when they were watching the first
astronauts walk on the Moon, everyone was a friend of the astronauts. Then, in 1979, Friends’
Day (July 20) was made an official celebration by the government of Argentina.
Friends’ Day in Argentina is a time for everyone to enjoy time with their best friends. The day
usually begins with calling friends. The phone lines are usually busy and sometimes the mobile
phone networks stop working for a while. In Argentina, the real celebrations for Friends’ Day
take place in the evening. Friends get together in restaurants and cafés. Normally these places
have special meals or events to celebrate this day.

On our basic emotions
It is said that some nationalities feel emotions in different parts of their bodies. The question is,
do we as humans show our emotions in the same way?
According to Dr Paul Ekman, humans have a set of basic emotions. In the 1970s, these
included: happiness, anger, fear, sadness and surprise. Ekman studied people and emotions and
believed that everyone usually feels emotions in the same way and that culture made no
difference to how people experienced or showed basic emotion.
Studies have shown that newborn babies can smile and cry, and that by the age of eighteen
months all humans may be able to show anger. They have also shown that children can express
all the basic emotions before they are of school age. Charles Darwin also found that people of
all ages and from a wide range of different countries used the same facial expressions to show
the basic emotions. He believed that the expression of these emotions was a natural human
function and not related to culture.
However, some people think differently, and feel that emotions change as a result of culture.
For example, although it is generally believed in the western world that anger is felt and shown
by all humans, Dr Jean Briggs, who has spent a lot of time living and studying Canadian Inuits
in the Arctic, found that they very rarely experienced or showed any signs of anger or
aggression. Although many believe that expressing anger is the best way to reduce it, research
has shown this is not true and often, expressing anger increases the anger felt.
It is hard to know what emotions to express or not sometimes. Milton Spett says we should
express negative emotions like anger, sadness or fear as this is good for us. But, on reading
studies by Eileen Kennedy-Moore and Jeanne Watson, they feel it can be understood that if we
are not comfortable or good at expressing our emotions, it may be bad for us to express strong
negative emotions.

is the perfect website for people looking for more information about their families. I’ve visited this UK
site every day since it started last month and have discovered family I didn’t know about. It’s been very
easy to find the information and it’s not expensive. Okay, I have been online for about five hours a day
and have downloaded a lot of information but after my mum told me about my grandfather who went to
the USA I knew I had to find out more. We already knew that my grandfather Joe married again when he
went to the USA in 1962. We also knew that he had three sons, Ben, Tom and Alex, with Alana, his
second wife. But, we didn’t know that Ben, Tom and Alex got married and they all had three children –
all of them boys! Ben, Tom and Alex and their families have always lived in the USA, and have never
been to the UK or Europe.
I’ve always wanted to go to the USA but have never been there. I think it is a fascinating country and now
I have a big family there, I really want to go. I’ve emailed my ‘new’ relatives and I’ve told them about
myself and my family in the UK. We’ve chatted online a few times and it’s been fun. They’ve invited me
to visit them in the summer and I’m going for a month! I’ve bought a plane ticket and am very excited.
My mum would also like to come with me to visit family she hasn’t seen yet.
I’ve had a great time finding out more about my family and with Your Family blogger it was very easy.
I’ve never used a website like this but now I’ve found it, I’m so happy! I’ve learnt a lot and now, I have to
go … I’m uploading some photos of us for our relatives in the USA!

Common winter illnesses
In colder countries, winter is the season when people are more likely to get common illnesses
such as colds or flu. In some countries, such as the UK, an adult can get a cold between one and
six times each year and children sometimes get more.
When you have a cold you often feel tired and find it difficult to breathe through your nose.
You may also have a sore throat and a cough. The good news is that a cold is not serious and
you usually feel better after four to seven days.
Another winter illness is the flu. The main symptoms are often a temperature and a headache.
People may feel weak and vomit. Flu is worse than a cold because it can sometimes cause more
serious illnesses, such as pneumonia.
You can get a cold or flu from other people, if they are ill and cough near you. If you start
feeling sick, get medical help and medicine that will help you get better. When you go to a
doctor they may give you pills, for example, antibiotics. These will help get rid of the virus and
the infection. They may also tell you to take a painkiller if you’ve got a headache.
If you get a bad cold or flu this winter, drink lots of water and rest at home. Colds or flu are
usually more infectious in the first few days and may easily spread to other people. So it is
better to stay at home and recover from your illness.

Toads with a difference
1 The pebble toad is only found in one place in the world, on the flat top of the highest tabletop
mountain in the world, Mount Roraima. This high mountain, is an incredible thirty-one
kilometres squared and is on the borders of Venezuela, Brazil and Guyana.

3 It can only do small jumps of a few centimetres. It does not run fast, and it is not poisonous.
But it can pull its arms, legs and head tightly under its body to make it look like a pebble.
When it sees its enemy, the tarantula spider, it throws itself off the rock and falls like a ball to
the ground – to escape the spider! It is so small and light that it doesn’t even get hurt!
The toad in the trees:
Like the pebble toad, the waterfall toad has an unusual way of getting out of danger. It likes
wet tropical or subtropical forests and also lives in Venezuela, Brazil and Guyana. It is the
size of a postage stamp, just 2.5 centimetres long and usually lives high up in the trees.
4 It has very large hands to help it climb and also has strong arms. Most frogs and toads usually
have strong legs but this little toad is not a strong jumper and cannot jump any more than a
few centimetres. It can however, escape danger when hunted by hungry snakes.
5 It doesn’t fight, it doesn’t hide and it can’t run fast. It doesn’t even roll like the pebble frog. If
a hungry snake wants it for its dinner, it chooses to jump into the air. This is where its large
hands are useful as, when it hits the branch of a tree, it uses its large strong hands to hold on.
It then pulls itself up onto the branch with its strong arms. What strength!

Mexico City International Airport
In 2009 Mexico City International Airport was reported to be the busiest airport in Latin
America. It was first opened in 1928 as a military airport. Its first international flight was to Los
Angeles in the USA after the airport was opened as an international civilian airport by President
Miguel Aleman in 1952. In 1990, the airport was so large that domestic check-in and flights
were moved to a different place to international flights. Since 2006, it has been known by
Mexicans as Benito Juárez International Airport, after the ex-president and in 2007 a second
terminal was opened. This airport is now the main airport for Aeroméxico, the largest airline in
Mexico.
It is a very popular airport and in 2009 it flew more than twenty-four million passengers to over
100 destinations worldwide. However the airport only has two runways. It is impossible to
build other runways because the airport is located in the east of the city, near to lots of houses
and buildings.
Finding accommodation at this airport is simple as both of its terminals have hotels. Terminal
two is the newer terminal of the two and was only finished a few years ago. There is a good
range of facilities here, including banks, a post office, tourist information and lost luggage. The
airport also has a number of restaurants and bars, as well as a range of shops. One of these is a
duty-free shop which is very popular with passengers. The baggage reclaim areas are large in
both terminals and there is also good parking available.
Although people fly to destinations all around the world, most passengers either travel to other
cities in Mexico or to the United States. In 2009, the most popular destinations in Mexico were
Cancun, Monterrey and Guadalajara. Far fewer people visited the Mexican cities of Chihuahua
and Ixtapa.
