Academy of MATH Measurement Student Reference Sheet Levels 1 to 5 LENGTH A quarter is about 1 inch wide A comic book is about 1 foot tall A teacher’s desk is about 1 yard wide There are 5,280 feet in one mile There are 1,760 yards in one mile The Metric System uses different units: A dime is about 1 centimeter wide A teacher’s desk is about 1 meter tall Scale drawings are usually used for very long distances like maps. maps. A key is given: In this case one inch equals ten miles from the key so the key shossthe 3 inches from point A to point B is equal to 30 miles of driving. miles of WEIGHT/MASS A cookie weighs about an ounce A textbook weighs about a pound The Metric System uses different units: A penny has a mass (weight) of about a gram A brick has a mass (weight) of about a kilogram PERIMETER and AREA The Perimeter- the size all around an object- is found By adding all the sides together. The desk shown has a Perimeter of 16 units. This is because 5 + 5, the two long sides, = 10. 3 + 3, the two short sides, = 6. 10 + 6 = 16. If the units are in feet, the Perimeter is 16 feet. It is the same for the Metric System. If the units are in meters, then the Perimeter is 16 meters. CAPACITY Capacity is how much a container of any type can hold. It takes 8 ounces to make a cup, 2 cups to make a pint, 4 cups to make a quart, and 4 quarts to make one gallon. TEMPERATURE Temperature can be measured on more than one scale. Fahrenheit (F) is popular in the United States while countries that use the Metric System prefer the Celsius (C) scale. Although the scales are different, the day is nice and warm at 800 Fahrenheit or 300 Celsius. It is the same here, water freezes at 320 Fahrenheit or at 00 Celsius. TIME: Seconds, Minutes, Hours, Days, Months, Years and Centuries The time on this clock is 3:00. If it is after midnight, but before noon, it’s 3:00 AM. If it’s after noon, but before midnight, it’s 3:00 PM. Time can be converted: 75 minutes is the same as 1 hour and 15 minutes. Some special clocks show all 24 hours of the day. Calendars measure days, weeks and months. There are 7 days in one week and about 4 weeks in most months. There are 12 Months in a Year There are 52 Weeks in a Year There are 100 Years in a Century MONEY: How much things cost in dollars and cents A Penny = 1 cent or 0.01 dollars 100 cents = 1 Dollar 5 cents = 1 Nickel or 0.20 dollars 10 cents = 1 Dime or 0.10 dollars 25 cents = 1 Quarter or 0.25 dollars 20 nickels = 1 Dollar 10 dimes = 1 Dollar 4 quarters = 1 Dollar A 5 Dollar Bill = 5 dollars A 10 Dollar Bill = 10 dollars or two 5 dollar bills A 20 Dollar Bill = 20 dollars or two 10 dollar bills or four 5 dollar bills Money is added and subtracted just like decimal numbers. It’s important to know how much change you should receive or if you have enough to buy something you want. This person gave the cashier $15 and received the correct change of $1.05.
