Please help by feeding pellets available from the Ferry Meadows Visitor Centre. Uneaten bread Uneaten bread and food left on the bank may attract rats. Uneaten bread in the water can cause poisonous blue green algae and pollutes the lake causing damage to fish. Angel wing Bread is junk food for birds The birds will readily eat bread but it has few nutrients for them and can make them ill. It causes obesity and makes some birds more vulnerable to dog attacks. It also makes them dependent upon our hand-outs. They lose their normal natural foraging behaviour and their fear of humans. rm tfo la p g in d e fe k c u D The duck feeding platform, on Overton Lake adjacent to the Visitor Centre, allows you to feed the birds in the water where they are in a safe area away from dogs. How can I help? No cooked food Cooked or processed food, including bread, contains salt and can be poisonous to birds. Feed small amounts Please only use small amounts of food. Specially made floating duck, geese and swan pellets, mixed grain, or uncooked plain porridge oats are best. Many people come to feed the birds so feeding only a small amount gives others a chance to enjoy feeding them as well. Feeding large amounts of bread gives the birds too much protein and too few vitamins. This can produce deformed bones and sticking out feathers which is a condition called angel wing. This prevents the birds from flying. www.neneparktrust.org.uk Nene Park Trust is a registered charity www.neneparktrust.org.uk
