We are straight back into the swing of things in year 4. Launching into this term’s topic, ‘Living Things and their Habitats’, the children looked
at the 7 characteristics of all living things - what living things need for life! See how many of them they can remember (MRS NERG might help).
If they can find any books from the library or from home about living things and their habitats that they want to bring in to share with the
class, please do.
PE: This term, outdoor PE (tennis) will be on a Wednesday and Indoor PE (Gymnastics) will be on a Thursday. Please make sure that your
children have the appropriate kit for that day – Too many children do not have a PE kit, it is part of the school uniform and must be worn for
PE.





Black shorts
Plimsolls / trainers
During the winter warm tracksuits and trainers may be worn for outdoor PE
In English: the children have been learning how to look for the key information and summarise a paragraph. This term there will be a focus on
reading and comprehension skills in the class. As part of our topic this term, the children have enjoyed inventing their own creature with
features from various living things. There are some amazing creations that the children will now use for a basis of their writing.
Next week the children will:


Organise information into paragraphs
Begin to write their information leaflets about their invented animal.
Grammar:


Revise the term ‘extended noun phrase’ and use extended noun phrases in their writing
Recap on the use of commas after fronted adverbials.
Spelling:


Learn to spell words with the ‘s’ sound spelt ‘ce and ci’
Revise spelling words in their contracted form
Comprehension:

Learn to use inference to explain how a character is feeling.
In Maths this week the children have been learning how to find the perimeter of a shape. They have also been practising counting on in
multiples of a given number and counting backwards into negative numbers.
Next week children will:





Measure, compare, add and subtract lengths, mass and volume
Choose the right units of measure to measure length, height, mass, temperature or capacity
Convert between units of measure
Compare numbers beyond 1000.
Round to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000
Active Learn: I have allocated an activity called, ‘Marching Madness’. The children have a range of levels that they can work their way
through, from finding the perimeter of 2D shapes by adding side lengths in centimetres to calculating the perimeter of simple rectilinear
shapes with up to eight sides. The activity is tricky at first but do persevere.
The home learning from Mrs Webb: Well done for completion of home learning over the holidays. Many children showed good dedication to
doing well in the activities they had chosen. Home learning this week is linked to Number and Place Value. They are to choose one of the
activities to complete, and I look forward to seeing what they have learnt in class being demonstrated in their home learning.
CBBC News
Mrs Webb has introduced the reading of the CBBC news with the children, to encourage them to take a wider interest in the world around
them. If they want to take a look at home as well and share what they found out with the class that would be great, as this helps them to
understand (comprehend) what they have read, which is our big focus this term.
Fun fact: Did you know a giraffe can lick the inside of its own ears?
Have a great weekend,
The Year 4 Team.
