Chinese New Year starts with the New Moon on the first day of the new year and ends on the full moon 15 days later. Chinese calendar is based on a combination of lunar and solar movements. The lunar cycle is about 29.5 days. In order to "catch up" with the solar calendar the Chinese insert an extra month once every few years (seven years out of a 19year cycle). This is the same as adding an extra day on leap year. This is why, according to the solar calendar, the Chinese New Year falls on a different date each year. Getting ready for the New Year involves house cleaning prior to the New Year; shopping for new clothes, candies and orange tangarine; decorate the house with spring couplets, flowers and plum blossoms and getting lucky money ready to be given out to children in the New Year. It is important for the family to eat dinner together on New Year's Eve, a time of reunion and thanksgiving. Most people eat vegetarian meals on New Year Day and a big feast on the 2nd day to mark the beginning of the New Year. Most traditional Chinese New Year dishes hae symbolic meaning. Some names of foods sound similar to characters with lucky connotations, while the shape or colour of other foods symbolizes Happiness, prosperity and good fortune. eg. Dumplings-wealth, lettuce-prosperity,noodles-longevity, oystersreceptivity to good fortune, seaweed-good luck and whole fish-abundance and togetherness. Wish you all good health and prosperity in the New Year! BROWSE! BID! (on Rotary, life or just things) We invite you to send your memories to Editor Becky at [email protected]. Here is another inside look of our Richmond meeting Feb 14, 1968. Pres. Chuck Wong, Sgt-at-Arms Randy Davidoff, Editor Chuck Wong, Vice Pres. Jim McCracken, Treasurer Tony Yurkovich and PP Bob Everett. "Can you imagine Randy, Tony(this is Dr. T) and Alex trying to upstage our fashion models in the paper? Gad -waht impudence! And the fines were trivial. Late, late again (doesn't this sound like our Ken?) were Ron and Dave and not so often Alec and Les. Wise Words "Many people think that if they were only in some other place, or had some other job, they would be happy. Well, that is doubtful. So get as much happiness out of what you are doing as you can and don't put off being happy until some future date." -Dale Carnegie The Lighter Side of Life Mind Reader Click on the link to visit the Webmaster in Hong Kong Rotary Club Golden Mile LINK Believe it or not he is a mind reader.
