AN IPJQEX TO THE KNOWN ORAL SOURCES OF THE: CHILD COLLECTION Kenneth A. Thigpen, Js. Folklore I n s t i t u t e Indiana E i i v e r s i t y Traditional ballad scholarship has sorely neglected the individual performers of the ballads. Perhaps due t o a l a t e n t survival of the communal theory, scholars have approached t h e e n t i r e body of published ballads, p a r t i c u l a r l y t h e portion represented by t h e Child collection, as the product of an amorphous singing throng, having only remote individuel characteriotics. Yet, i f a ballad variant is t r u l y from o r a l t r a d i t i o n , i t obviously has been sung o r r e c i t e d by a p a r t i c u i u . individual a t a p a r t i c u l a r point i n time. We are l e f t a t t h e mercy of c o l l e c t o r s and e d i t o r s , though, when we t r y t o determine who sang o r r e c i t e d which ballade, p a r t i c u l a r l y those edited by Child. Nevertheless, since a good many of our conceptioas and theories &bout, ballads a r e based on Child's work, an approach t o the ballads contained therein through t h e individual performers of them should be a t l e a s t an i n t e r e s t i n g and possibly even a q u i t e productive nethod of analysis. To f a c i l i t a t e this type of analysis I have compiled an index t o the known o r a l sources of the ballads i n The English and S c o t t i s h Popular Ballads.1 Such an index can only be t e n t a t i v e , as f u r t h e r investigation of the manuscripts from which Child collected h i s t e x t s i s needed f o r anything approaching an accurate account of t h e known o r a l sources t o be given. It should a l s o be pointed out t h e t only the English variants are izcluded i n the index, since the American variants are too few i n number and poor i n documentation f o r individual r e p e r t o i r e study. Nevertheless, even such an admittedly limited index can be useful, pointing t o those singers which Child has identified. J. Barre Toelken has chaxged t h a t "the number of unreliable t e x t s s t r e t c h e s f a r beyond Child's admissions or suspicions: fewer than half of his collected ballads may be i n fact trea-bed as c l e a r l y t r a d i t i o n a L t t 2 I n s p i t e of t h i s claim, it seems t h a t i n those cases where an infoxrm,nt has been clearly i d e n t i f i e d by name and place of residence, the chances of an orally t r a n s a t t e d t e x t are good. Therefore, wherever Child has indicated t h a t a b a l l a d was collected from an individual i n a cer$ain place, I have believed E m . An i n t e r e s t i n g study would be t o compare the ballad v a r i a n t s t h a t are attributed t o known sources, those listed i n t h i s index, with those ballads Toelken i n c l ~ ~ d ei ns his l i s t ; perhaps Child was more accurate than Toelken suspects i n stating tk-2-bcertain babld.3 were d ~ f i ~ i t e il ny t h e oral t r a d i t i o n of an individual A reasonable degree of conservatism was applied t o the creation of the index since it i s limited t o l i s t i n g only m i a n t s a t t r i b u t e d t o known scurces. Toelken's point i s t h a t those variants collected from vaguely i d e n t i f i e d o r a l sources are suspect. He seys, "such notes as 'From t h e r e c i t a t i o n of an old woman,' 'Procured by David Webster, bookseller, from t r a d i t i o n , ' 'Taken down from r e c i t a t i o n i n t h e North of Scotland,' 'Copied from t h e mouth of a milkmaid,' and 'Sung by an aged nurse, once resident i n the north,' which Child provides, mostly reprinted from his printed sources, are s o vague and inadequate f o r the f o l k l o r i s t t h a t they i n v i t e not o n l y scholarly d i s t r u o t , but suspicion, especially since many other ballads i n h i s collection appear with complete and v e r l f i a b l e references. "3 Fwthermcre, these vaguely c i t e d sources a r e not useful i n revealing the r e p e r t o i r e of an individual. singer. The decision t o include o r exclude c e r t a i n questionable sources had t o be made on t h e baais of a somewhat blind f a i t h i n t h e v a l i d i t y of the desc r i p t i o a given of c e r t a i n primary sources. The thirty-one ballads known as the "old Lady's collectiont' were included as representing t h e repert o i r e of a single informant since it i s said t o be described y Scott as t h e "collection of an old lady'a complete set of b s U a d ~ . " These ~ were collected from t h e old lady i n t h e north of Scotland by a M r . Skene of Rubislaw. Those ballads from the Harris MS which were a c t u a l l y attributed t o Mrs. Hamis were included. The manuscript contains, it i s said, allad ads lesmned by A m e l i a Harris i n her childhood from an old nurse i n Perthshire (the last years of the 18th century); taken down by her daugh$er, who has added a few of her own collecting."5 The Gibb MS, on t h e other hand, seems 1-ess trustworthy, being described as "Twentycne t a l l a d s written dcwn from t h e r e c i t a t i o n of his mother by Mr. James Gibb of Joppa, representing t h e form i n which ballads were r e c i t e d . about t h e beginning of tile century i n hgus and ~ e m s"6 . However, several. t e x t s asre a t t r i b u t e d i n head notes t o people other than Krs. Gibb of Joppa, 80 only the t3x-ee vm-i&ts s p e c i f i c a l l y a t t r i b u t e d t o her were included i n t h e index; though perhaps a more l i b e i a l allowance would L%ve been preferred by some, t h a t is, the a t t r i b u t i n g of a l l the t e x t s t h a t a r e contained i n t h e manuscript t o Mrs:Gibb t h a t were not s p e c i f i c a l l y a t t r i b u t e d t o someone e l s e . This is a case when access t o t h e manuscript i t s e l f probably would have been immensely helpful. Several singers whose v a r i a n t s were gleaned from t h e Percy papers have been included i n the index. Although one m a y object t o the o r a l a u t h e n t i c i t y of these t e x t s , they do bear evidence of coming from individual singers. The seven ballads a t t r i b u t e d t o the Revereria P. Parsons of Wye, accordi n g t o David C. Fowler, " A l l seem t o be authentic specimens of eighteenthcentury o r a l t r a d i t i o n , untouched by a sophisticated hand.
