Curriculum Overview
Year: 1
Term: Winter/ Easter 2015
Topic – Flowers and Insects
In the core subjects your child will be learning:
English:
Children will continue learning how to write recounts, focusing on the use of time
adverbials, the past tense and how to include personal opinion. We will continue working
with the children on how to construct a simple sentence using basic punctuation and
grammar. Children will be using full stops, question marks and exclamation marks in their
writing. They will be exploring writing strategies such as, ‘think it, say it, write it, read
it’ to help them build sentences. We will be further developing our use of descriptive
language (wow words) in a sentence. In class we will cover well known fairy tales and
write our own stories. The children will also be writing a simple information text on an
insect of their choice. These will all be collated to make a class information book.
Children will also:
 continue the Letters and Sounds phonics curriculum to increase their phonological
awareness and knowledge of common exception words (tricky words that cannot be
read phonetically).
 apply reading strategies such as, segmenting and blending words to read and write
with increasing fluency, as well as comprehending and engaging in various texts.
 explicitly learn correct uppercase and lowercase block letter formations and
number formations when writing.
 understand the difference between the sounds in words and the names of the
alphabet.
Maths:
Children will continue learning about counting, ordering, reading and writing of numbers
up to 100. The term will begin with learning about odd and even numbers and looking at
finding them in the world around us. The children will continue learning different
methods of addition and subtraction and will add and subtract one-digit and two-digit
numbers up to 20, including zero. This will lead on to solving one-step word problems.
Children will also begin to learn about fractions in the context of food and shapes, and then
build on their knowledge by introducing and using ½ and ¼. The children will also begin to
measure length, capacity and weight.
