Dear Parent or Guardian:
Your child is currently learning to find words that have meanings
that are the same. These words are called synonyms. He or she is
also learning to find words that have opposite meanings. These
words are called antonyms. Here is your chance to help your child
practice this important skill.
In this PAL Packet you will find a short activity for you and your
child to do. Please do the activity and The Back Page this evening.
Then sign your name on The Back Page and have your child return it
tomorrow.
Remember, parents are a child’s first teacher. Thank you for your
time and energy in making learning fun and exciting for your child.
Sincerely,

SYNONYMS AND ANTONYMS
Parent Pointer —
Being able to identify synonyms and antonyms is an important skill. It
can make reading and writing more enjoyable for your child. A synonym
is a word that means the same or nearly the same as another word.
House and home are synonyms because they have meanings that are
similar. An antonym is a word that means the opposite of another
word. Down and up are antonyms because they have meanings that are
opposite. This important skill will help your child better understand
what he or she is reading and will also help them become a better
writer.
Reading in the Home, on the Go, and for the Fun of It —
DIRECTIONS: Have your child turn to the Finding Synonyms
worksheet. Have your child read the first word, happy. Tell him or her
to circle the word in the box that means the same as happy. Have your
child repeat these steps for the rest of the words. Check your child’s
work to make sure he or she circled the synonym. Have your child turn
to the Finding Antonyms worksheet. Have your child read the first
word, day. Tell him or her to circle the word in the box that has the
opposite meaning as that of day. Have your child repeat these steps
for the rest of the words. Check your child’s work to make sure he or
she circled the antonym.
Talk about It —
After you have finished the activity, turn to The Back Page to have
your child show what he or she knows.
Now go have some fun with the activity! (
