FOUR CHAMBERS OF COMMERCE SEND MEMORANDUM IN SUPPORT OF THE US29
CHARLOTTESVILLE WESTERN BYPASS TO GOVERNOR TERRY MCAULIFFE AND VIRGINIA
TRANSPORTATION SECRETARY AUBREY LAYNE
(Charlottesville, Virginia – January 17) Four regional Chambers of Commerce: the Charlottesville
Regional Chamber, Danville-Pittsylvania County Chamber, Lynchburg Regional Chamber and Roanoke
Regional Chamber, have sent an extensive memorandum in support of the US29 Charlottesville Western
Bypass Safety & Access Project to Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe and Virginia Transportation Secretary
Aubrey Layne. (A copy of the January 13th memorandum is attached.)
United States Route 29 runs from Pensacola, Florida north more than 1,000 miles, to
Baltimore, Maryland. In Virginia, US29 runs a length of 219 miles from the Virginia border with North
Carolina to the Key Bridge over the Potomac River into Washington, DC.
The Chambers’ extensive seven-page memorandum concludes:
“The facts are clear: the US29 Western Bypass will improve transportation safety and
access, and the environmental impacts can and will be managed properly.
“Our Chambers implore you and your administration to continue to proceed without
delay with this approved and funded vital safety, access and economically needed transportation
improvement project along one of Virginia’s essential national highways.”
Together the four Chambers have more than 3,800 member enterprises, employing more
than 203,000 Virginia citizens earning an estimated annual payroll of $9.1 billion.
