Cow Pond
2. Leave by the main door. Walk
down the lime tree avenue, turning
right on reaching the road. Go
through Cumberland Gate, turn left
and follow the road to reach the
Savill Building.
(Round trip, both 2 miles/3.2 km).
Copper Horse and Deer Park
Leave by the main door. Walk
down the lime tree avenue (note
the mistletoe on the older trees).
This avenue was planted about
1697 by William Bentinck, Earl of
Portland. Halfway down, set back
about thirty yards to the right, there
is an oak tree, planted in 1888 to
commemorate the coming of age
of Prince Christian Victor of
Schleswig-Holstein, the eldest
child of Prince and Princess
Christian. Cross the road and
follow the recently planted
Ranger’s Avenue to Cow Pond. As
you walk along the avenue note
Coronation Grove on your left, a
collection of oaks donated by the
countries of the Commonwealth to
commemorate the coronation of
King George VI and Queen
Elizabeth in 1937.
(Round trip 1 mile/1.6 km).
Cow Pond and
Rhododendron Ride
As before to Cow Pond. Circle
round the pond to the right,
passing the oak arbour (erected in
2013 to mark The Queen’s
Diamond Jubilee), and turn left
where the path joins a track on the
far side of the pond. Follow the
track between rhododendron
hedges until you reach
Bishopsgate. Take the road,
turning left and the next left (before
the pink gate houses), and return
to Cumberland Lodge. Best in
May/June when rhododendrons
are in flower.
(Round trip 3.5 miles/5.6km).
Savill Garden
1. As above to Cow Pond. Circle
round the pond to the right,
passing the oak arbour, and turn
right where the path joins the track
on the far side of the pond. Follow
this track until it joins a road,
continuing straight ahead to reach
the Savill Building visitor’s centre,
with gift shop, cafe and garden
entrance. There is a charge to
enter the garden.
Leave by the side door and walk
straight on past the Mews. At the
end of the lane, cross the road and
follow the rough track on the right
(opposite Chaplain’s Lodge) down
through woodland. Passing Ox
Pond on your left, this leads to a
wide grassy track at the end of
which is a big gate into the Deer
Park with the statue beyond. The
statue is of George III, dressed as
Marcus Aurelius, on horseback.
There is a fine view of Windsor
Castle, looking down the Long
Walk (2.5 miles/4 km) which was
planned by Christopher Wren for
Charles II. Unless you want to
return the same way, go down the
hill beyond the statue to the road.
Turn left to leave the deer park,
and turn left two more times as the
road forks (1 mile/1.6km).
Alternatively, turn right, continue
on the road until you reach the
crossroads just outside the Deer
Park and follow the signposts for
Cumberland Lodge.
(Round trip 3 miles/4.8km).
Windsor
Go to the Copper Horse as above
and continue in a straight line
down the Long Walk until you
reach Windsor Castle. Turn left to
reach the town centre and the
public entrance to the Castle
(round trip 9 miles, 14.4 km).
Take the same route back, or a
taxi from outside the Castle. There
is a very occasional white bus
service from Windsor, stopping
near Chaplain’s Lodge.
The Obelisk
Leave by the main door. Walk
down the lime tree avenue, turning
right on reaching the road. After
going through Cumberland Gate,
walk down the recently planted
grassy avenue towards the obelisk
which you will see up the hill on
your left. The obelisk
commemorates the Duke of
Cumberland’s victory at the Battle
of Culloden.
(Round trip 2 miles/3.2 km).
It is possible to walk round the
Obelisk Pond (1 mile/1.6 km) or to
go on towards the Valley Gardens.
Valley Gardens
and Virginia Water
Leave by the main door. Walk
down the lime tree avenue, turning
right on reaching the road. Go
through Cumberland Gate and
follow the road across Smith’s
Lawn (with the polo ground on
your left). Note the statue of Prince
Albert on horseback on your right.
On reaching the far side of the
Lawn, either :1.turn left along the
road by the Guard’s Polo Club,
taking the second turning right for
the track leading into the Valley
Gardens (no charge for entry).
Various walks are signposted; or 2.
continue along the road down into
the valley until you reach the lake,
where you can turn left on to the
lakeside path.
(Round trip 3 miles/4.8 km; the full
circuit of Virginia Water is 4.5
miles/7.2 km).
The Village
Leave by the side door and walk
straight past the Mews. Turn left at
the road, bearing right (with
Chaplain’s Lodge on your left) and
follow the road down the hill, going
straight on at the crossroads. The
shop/Post Office is after the Green
on the right.
(Round trip 2 miles/3.2 km).
