Message From Rabbi Judy Cohen-Rosenberg
My mother, as I’m sure all mothers are, was a significant influence on me. Her passing left
me bereft. However, the outpouring of sympathy CRT members have shown me and my
family throughout my mother’s illness through our period of mourning has helped
enormously.
Mike, Micah, Leora and I are truly blessed to be a part of this Jewish community. Every need
we had during shiva was attended to with care, and if food is love, we are surely beloved.
What comforts me most is the knowledge that your actions of Chesed Shel Emet (righteous
acts that go unrequited) are not unique to me. I have seen many of you perform these
mitzvot for countless others who are bereaved. You are truly a caring community.
It will take many more days before I am able to thank each of you personally, but for now,
please accept these public thanks. I am grateful to all who attended Mildred’s funeral, visited
us during shiva, sent food, led minyans, made contributions, and were particularly thoughtful
and kind in seeing to my and my family’s well being. If you see me crying, it is not due to
regret or loss. I was ready to let my mom go. My tears are an expression of how
overwhelmed I have been by your kindness. They are tears of pride in my community.
The mitzvot you performed on my mother’s behalf are ones we always pray we never have to
perform again, knowing well that when called upon, we will. I have seen you do it many
times before and now have experienced it first hand. I wish we were less practiced at them,
but am comforted knowing that I am part of a very compassionate and understanding
community, a family at its best. Thank you all so very much.
Rabbi Judy
Presidents Message
C
hanukah?
You
mean to tell me it’s
time for Chanukah?
Well fry my latkes, this
year is really going by fast.
Since you brought it up
(you did, didn’t you), don’t
forget to come to our
Chanukah
dinner
on
December 18 or that the
students can shop at the
Chanukah Boutique on
December 6.
Please be sure to look at
the Kol Nidre pledge list in
this issue. On behalf of
CRT I want to thank
everyone who made a
pledge. You have decided
to be part of the future by
making a pledge today.
Take a look; you will see
the names of parents and
even children who made
pledges. Some of these
children are young adults
and some adults. Amazing
that’s’ all I can say. If you
have not made a pledge
it’s not too late, we’d love
to be able to publish a
revised list (subtle hint).
The Journal and the
Auction will be here before
you know it!!! We need ads
and items for both.
Were you at the Catering
Showcase? I’m still full.
Once again Diane and Art
put together a great
evening to showcase our
panel of preferred caterers
and our room rental
services.
Contrary
to
popular opinion I was not
even in the building when
Celeste won the raffle.
Gift cards make great
presents.
Enduring

of
November: Austin Aronoff
carrying the Torah around
the sanctuary faster than
Johnny Damon going to
third against the Phillies.
And Austin had a bigger
smile on his face than
Damon did. It’s a moment
like that that sticks with you
and represents everything
we do here at CRT.
I was trying to think of
something profound to say
for the holiday season. But
I’m limited so I’ll do the
best I can. This holiday
season give something to
someone else. Maybe give
a meal, a laugh, support, a
friendly ear. Send a card to
a soldier who serves our
country. Tell your family
you love them. Sit down
and count your blessings.
Then share something with
someone else.
Did I mention that gift
cards
make
great
presents?
This month’s books: I
finished
Rashi’s
Daughters, Book 2: Miriam
by Maggie Anton. It’s the
second of three books set
in medieval France starting
around 1070 and is
historical fiction about the
great scholar Salomon Ben
Isaac, better known as
RASHI (Rabbi Shlomo
Itzchaki)
and
his
daughters.
So naturally I followed that
up with Sandy Koufax: A
Lefty’s Legacy by Jane
Leavy. Ok not a smooth
segue but it works for me.
Koufax is pretty complex
and
apparently
not
understood
by
many
because he likes to keep
his private life private. He
comes across favorably in
this book which tells his
story set against the
perfect game he threw
towards the end of his
career. Every other chapter
alternates between an
inning of the game and his
history. Remember when
he refused to pitch on Yom
Kippur?
I get most of these books
from our CRT library; you
should really check it out –
pun intended. Someone
recently asked me if I read
all these books. I do, I
enjoy reading. If you have
ever
seen
our
son
Benjamin you would know
it’s definitely genetic.
Once again I begin my
annual “don’t take it out on
them because they were
born in December” appeal.
Just ask anyone born in
December, they will be
happy to explain what this
means.

The games were fast and
furious. Thanks to all who
helped to make this a fun
evening.
In
following
established tradition, the
older teen winners donated
their prize selections to the
younger
children
and
everyone went home a
winner.
Our Fall Rummage Sale on
November 21st and 22nd
was a great success. I
want to thank everyone
who donated clothing and
goods to the event; without
your donations rummage
would not be possible.
Whatever was not sold
was in turn donated to the
Eastern Farm Workers and
they were very grateful and
appreciative.
On Sunday December 6th

.CRT’s Caring Community Committee is here to help you. We are Temple members ready to
lend a hand to other Temple members. We can provide rides to Temple for those who don’t

MEN’S CLUB NEWS……………………………………………………………………………………
The Men’s Club had two very enjoyable and successful activities in November. On Sunday,
November 1st, another lucky group took the special private tour of ESPN’s main studios in
Bristol, CT courtesy of Alan Lissauer and his son. From what I heard, everyone had a great
time and got to meet a few sports personalities. The question is whether we can go to the well a
third time and do it again next year.
On Tuesday, November 17th, we held our annual membership dinner. Attendance was great –
more than 40 members – and everyone seemed to enjoy the catered food of Brendel’s. They
enjoyed it so much, in fact, that we ran low after first helpings and need to bring out bagels,
tuna and salads donated by Steve Aronoff from his son’s Bar Mitzvah the previous Saturday.
The return speaker (for a third time), Judge Edward McCarty, was again informative,
entertaining and even provocative (in a good way) in his comprehensive discussion about the
various players in the Mideast. As he noted himself, we can only hope (or pray) that his lessthan-optimistic predictions do not come true this time.
I want to thank everyone who helped on the dinner, including Russ Graham, who donated some
items for a raffle, Ira Warshawsky, who helped bring in Judge McCarty, and those who cleaned
up afterwards.
For the last time, the World Series pool, which I put together only a couple of days before the
Series began, was not “fixed.” Paul Teller and I won it fair and square.
Things will be slowing down now for a while for the Men’s Club, with only our regular meeting
scheduled in December (the 1st). After that, we have a “bagel breakfast” scheduled, but not yet
planned, for January 17th, a joint event with the Sisterhood on 2/6, and our Coffee House on
3/6. We’ll have more details on these later.
Regards,
Ed Temple

Fundraising News…………………………………………………………………………
Wow, what a month for letters; I received so many that I nearly missed the deadline for publishing them.
They were excellent unfortunately I can only share these two with you this month.
Dear Barry:
When I went to your website last week to order gift cards, I noticed that some stores on your order page
had gone out of business. Are you still offering those cards or are you having a problem updating the
website?
Sincerely,
Detailed Online Buyer from East Meadow
Dear Detailed,
Yes, there are a few stores that unfortunately went out of business over the last year. Although those
cards can’t be used anymore, I thought that if someone wanted to buy some as collector’s items, I may
be able to get a few of them. Actually, the website was updated this week; those stores have been
removed and a bunch of new ones were added including: Michael’s, Walgreen’s, Pier One Imports,
Build-A-Bear and more. Please check it out by going to the CRT website and click on the order gift
cards button, you’ll be amazed.
Dear Barry:
I have a few business contacts that may be able to donate some very cool items for the Goods &
Services Auction in May, but I’m not sure how or when to approach them. I thought that I would wait
until April, which would give me time to figure out the proper way to ask them. Do I need any
documentation to show them? Do you have any suggestions?
Sincerely,
B to B from Westbury
Dear B to B,
Thank you for offering to solicit your business contacts for auction items. Actually, the sooner that you
approach them for a donation the better it will be. If you need documentation, I can provide you with an
autographed photo of the Auctioneer that you can show them. On second thought, it might be more
effective to contact any member of the Fundraising Committee, who will provide you with an official
auction solicitation letter.
The next Fundraising Meeting will be held at 7:30 pm on Thursday, December 3rd at Dan Kotcher’s
House.
If you have any questions, please submit them to the temple office or e-mail them directly to me
([email protected]).
Check out the updated gift card website (www.typezdg.com/crt) or link up through the CRT web site.

Preschool News ……………………………………………..............................................
November was a very busy
month as we continued
with our autumn projects
and took nature walks.
Before
we
knew
it,
Thanksgiving arrived with
lots
of
turkeys
and
discussions of " What we
are Thankful for"?
As part of our autumn unit,
we examined seeds from
gourds, pumpkins, and
corn.
The
children
compared these seeds
using several of their
senses. They touched.
tasted,
smelled
and
compared different sizes,
shapes, and amounts.
We've been using leaves
in many math, science and
art projects and reading
and singing about them
(also
dancing
and
marching in them).
We had our multi-cultural
luncheon and it was a
great success. The food
was delicious and enjoyed
by all. Each family sent in a
dish ( with an explanation)
from their country of origin.
We collected lots of
canned food and donated it
to St. Brigids food drive.
Thank you to all of our very
generous families and to
Bonnie who had to carry all
those heavy bags of food.
We're looking forward to
our Chanukah party on
Tuesday, December 15th.
We are going to spin
dreidels and eat lots of
latkes and sing songs and
dance - lots of fun.
We have new pets - 2
Dwarf
African
Frogs.
They're tiny, like fish, and
stay in a container with
water. They are available
for holidays - especially the
2 week holiday break in
December.
If
anyone
wants to babysit our frogs,
please let Marcia or Bonnie
know.

School continues to run
well with its very full
schedule of activities.
Attendance has been high
despite all the illness going
around;
thank
you,
parents, for getting your
children here on a regular

And thank you to both our
Sunday and Wednesday

the school running at such
a high level. Particular
thanks go to our teenagers

Ritual Committee.........................................................................................................
We have had some wonderful
Shabbat services over the past
few weeks, including a
presentation by the Eastern
Farmworkers describing the
good works they do and an
inspirational presentation by
Matthew Rodriguez, a 15 year
old boy who started a
foundation called Cleats 4
Kids when he was 7 years old.
Matthew and his foundation
collect baseball equipment
which he brings to the
Dominican Republic twice a
year to distribute to very poor
families which can't buy bats,
balls, shoes, uniforms, even
caps for their children.
We are collecting equipment
for Cleats 4 Kids in our lobby.
Clean out your garages and
basements and bring baseball
equipment to the Temple.
Rachel Pastenak brings her
magnificent voice to services
once or twice a month, and
guest singers David Berkowitz
and Amy Dattner and Peter
Levy help lead services once a
month. Our Youth Choir sings
at Family Shabbat each month,
and choir members ably fill in
at services when these people
are not officiating.
Mark on your calendars
December 11 and December
18. David Berkowitz will be
here on the 11th to help us
start Chanukah, and on the
18th Rachel Pasternak will be
here for the last night of
Chanukah. On that night we
will also have our popular
Chanukah Shabbat
Congregational Dinner. We
hope to see all of you on these
dates.
