The host city
Athens: five thousand years of recorded history - the birth place of democracy
Athens is the capital and largest city of Greece. It is one of the oldest cities in
the world with recorded history with up to 3,200 BC. The Ancient Athens, a walled city,
was a powerful city-state, developed alongside the harbor, which originally was the
Faliro and later Piraeus. Center of arts, knowledge and philosophy, home of the

Academy of Plato and Aristotle's Lyceum, widely reported as the cradle of Western
civilization and the birthplace of democracy, mainly due to the impact of cultural and
political achievements during the 5th and 4th century BC. A cosmopolitan metropolis
today, modern Athens is central to economic, financial, industrial, political and cultural
life in Greece. In 2012, Athens was ranked the 39th richest city in the world in terms of
purchasing power and the 77th most expensive in a study by UBS.
The urban area of Athens has a population of 2,732,875 inhabitants according
to the census of 2011 and an area of 412 square kilometers, which includes a total of
35 municipalities distributed in four regional units.
The Museums
Athens because of the long and valuable history is one of the few European
capitals that host a large number of museums. Starting from the National
Archaeological Museum, which was founded in 1889, visitors can witness evidence
from throughout the Greek civilization.
The new Acropolis Museum is a modern museum that meets all the
requirements for the special care of the findings, as was inaugurated in 2009. When
visiting this required several hours of your time to be able to admire the most of the
findings and statues hosted. Then, the Ancient Agora Temple of Hephaestus and the
Stoa (Arcade) of Attalos, and the historical museum of Athens, enable you to feel how
the ancient Greeks lived.
The Museum of Cycladic Art is dedicated to the study and promotion of ancient
cultures of the Aegean and Cyprus, with special emphasis on Cycladic Art of the 3rd
millennium BC
