Cam in the Classroom: Mrs. Matheson Desert Valley Elementary Bullhead City, Arizona Monday, August 25, 2014 Comment From Mrs. Mathesons 4th grade Okay, I think we're ready. Amanda Nicholson, WCV: Hi, class! Hope school is going well for you today. Glad you are here for our session! Ready to talk about Grayson? Comment From Mrs. Mathesons 4th grade 1. We might as well start the year off with: How much does Grayson weigh? Amanda Nicholson, WCV: Grayson weighs 525 grams right now -- which is about 1.1 pounds. Comment From Mrs. Mathesons 4th grade 2. We were reading Grayson's story and were wondering where the humerus is on her. (well any bird). Where was her injury located? Amanda Nicholson, WCV: Great question! I'll show you. This is a general bird radiograph (x-ray) with labels: Cam in the Classroom: Mrs. Matheson’s 4th Grade Class Page 1 Amanda Nicholson, WCV Amanda Nicholson, WCV: You can see that the pink bone is the humerus. Amanda Nicholson, WCV: Here is a radiograph of Grayson: Amanda Nicholson, WCV Cam in the Classroom: Mrs. Matheson’s 4th Grade Class Page 2 Amanda Nicholson, WCV: And the arrow points to the part of her humerus that was injured. Amanda Nicholson, WCV: So you can see it's in the same area as YOUR humerus -- the bone that is in between your shoulder and elbow! Comment From Mrs. Mathesons 4th grade 3. What does she look like when she molts? Amanda Nicholson, WCV: Grayson doesn't have a big dramatic molt like some of our education birds. She does molt, but she doesn't really seem to have any "bad feather days". Amanda Nicholson, WCV Comment From Mrs. Mathesons 4th grade 4. We've talked about how Grayson laid an egg (and you found out she's a girl). What did you do with the egg that she laid? (Chloe) Amanda Nicholson, WCV: We saved one egg -- and have it on display in our library so that people can see how big a Broad-winged Hawk's egg is. Cam in the Classroom: Mrs. Matheson’s 4th Grade Class Page 3 Amanda Nicholson, WCV Comment From Mrs. Mathesons 4th grade 5. Does Grayson eat anything besides mice? Have you ever given her insects? Is so, which ones? Amanda Nicholson, WCV: Grayson primarily eats mice at the Wildlife Center. I'm not sure if our rehab staff has ever tried offering her a canned insect -- sometimes we do that for some birds, but they like the live things better! Comment From Mrs. Mathesons 4th grade 7. What did Grayson look like as a baby when she came to WCV? Amanda Nicholson, WCV: I don't have any photos of her from when she was admitted in June 2010 -- the earliest confirmed photo I have is this one, when she was being trained: Cam in the Classroom: Mrs. Matheson’s 4th Grade Class Page 4 Amanda Nicholson, WCV Amanda Nicholson, WCV Amanda Nicholson, WCV: By then, she was about 3.5 months old. Comment From Mrs. Mathesons 4th grade Did you hear the collective sigh from the class on the egg photo? Cam in the Classroom: Mrs. Matheson’s 4th Grade Class Page 5 Amanda Nicholson, WCV: But here is what Broad-winged Hawks look like when they are babies: Amanda Nicholson, WCV Image property of The Raptor Center http://www.raptor.cvm.umn.edu/ Comment From Mrs. Mathesons 4th grade Questions are coming up "Training for what?" Amanda Nicholson, WCV: To be an education ambassador! Which leads to the next part ... Comment From Mrs. Mathesons 4th grade 8. What are the things on her feet? What are they used for? (Matt, Adan, Lahna) Amanda Nicholson, WCV: All of our education birds have anklets around their feet -- you can think of these as bracelets. They also have "jesses" attached to the anklets -- these thin strips of leather help us hold on to the bird so that they don't fly away when we use them on programs. Cam in the Classroom: Mrs. Matheson’s 4th Grade Class Page 6 Amanda Nicholson, WCV: Here is a video where I explain what the equipment is -- using Grayson! -- from last year. I think Mrs. Matheson says you will watch this later! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fYtDbRfqtCI Comment From Mrs. Mathesons 4th grade 6. Do you know when Grayson's birthday (hatchday) is? Amanda Nicholson, WCV: Whoops -- I just realized I'm out of order -- I was missing a question from you guys earlier and I typed it in a bit late! Amanda Nicholson, WCV: We don't know when her birthday/hatchday is since she hatched in the wild. But ... in reading the natural history of Broad-winged Hawks, we can make an educated guess! Amanda Nicholson, WCV: Generally, Broad-winged Hawks hatch in the second week of June (according to the Birds of North America Online) and they fledge (leave the nest and start flying) about a month or so later. Amanda Nicholson, WCV: Grayson came to us at the end of June in 2010, so our best guess is that she was getting ready to start flying, but either was pushed from the nest by a sibling, or attempted to fly and that didn't go well! Comment From Mrs. Mathesons 4th grade There are some students wishing it was the end of the day! Comment From Mrs. Mathesons 4th grade 9. Does Grayson have a camera? Amanda Nicholson, WCV: No ... not yet, anyway! There is no camera in Grayson's enclosure, but maybe we could do that sometime this year! Cam in the Classroom: Mrs. Matheson’s 4th Grade Class Page 7 Comment From Mrs. Mathesons 4th grade Just to let CN know, we started reading "We Can't All Be Rattlesnakes" last week. (Not today as we'll watch Grayson's video) Amanda Nicholson, WCV: Fun!! Amanda Nicholson, WCV: Great book. Comment From dawntye How is Grayson doing? Amanda Nicholson, WCV: She's great! Comment From Mrs. Mathesons 4th grade We've met Crusher, Gunnar, Speedy, and Rex. Amanda Nicholson, WCV: Maybe the rest of us should re-read! Comment From Mrs. Mathesons 4th grade How long does it take Grayson to molt? Amanda Nicholson, WCV: Most of the birds take a month or two for a complete molt -- they don't want to replace every feather at once! Comment From Mrs. Mathesons 4th grade I think that is all our Grayson questions for this time. I'm going to open it up for them to type in. Amanda Nicholson, WCV: Thanks so much for your great questions!
