My mother's brother, Marion Kirk Johnson, passed away on May 12th. "Uncle Bill" as he was known, to all except the
<8&'<##'4"'9&'F"%%&3=&='6"8':"$8'&66"84->''
brethren at Ancient Landmark Lodge #231 in Savannah ( they evidently called him Marion), was initiated, passed and
' raised in the same class with my father in 1956. He moved through the officer's line, one chair ahead of my dad and was
master of the lodge in 1962. Uncle Bill was born in Estil, SC and moved to Savannah as a young boy. During the
Depression he would sit all day in the Ellis Square adjacent to the old City Market and weave cast nets which he sold to
help support his single mother and two sisters. He was a WWII Navy fighter pilot who saw a tremendous amount of
action in the South Pacific. Uncle Bill returned home to Savannah and owned and operated a heating/cooling and sheet
metal company for the next 45 years. He was the man who taught me how to fish, and he loved being out in the salt
water rivers sounds of the Georgia coast. I had the privilege to assist the brethren from Ancient Landmark Lodge in
performing a Masonic funeral as we laid him to rest in the old Bonaventure Cemetery. He is buried approximately 200
feet from the bluff, overlooking the Wilmington River where he spent so many hours of his life, fishing and shrimping
and teaching others to do the same.
I have scheduled a lodge workday for Saturday, June 19th. The project for the day, as recommended by the Property and
Investment Committee, and graciously funded by WBro Sid Cohen's donation of meal receipts, will be repairing and
painting the gable on the front of the building. We will need to scrape and paint the gable, as well as the square and
compasses. Anyone who might have access to some scaffolding, please contact Brother Akridge or myself to arrange to
have it on site, otherwise anyone with some extension ladders please bring them.
We have a very nice problem. We currently have nine Entered Apprentice brethren. Two have successfully completed
'
their catechism proficiencies and have been approved for advancement.
We will confer the Fellow Craft Degree on
>'
brothers Dyer and Armentrout at the June 24th regular communication. I would like all Master Masons and any Fellow
'
Craft masons to attend. Our Senior Warden does a fantastic job of the second section and it shouldn't be missed.
