MONARCH GROUP CASE STUDY
THE CHALLENGE
The Monarch Group is a leading UK-based travel group with core activities in scheduled
airline operations, tour operations and aircraft engineering. It is headquartered in London
Luton, offering airline capacity of some seven million sector seats and tour operating
passenger volumes of some 850,000 customers.
The Group has an over 50-year trading history and comprises well-regarded and longestablished travel brands with strong heritage.
The holding company of The Monarch Group is Monarch Holdings Limited, the principal
subsidiaries of which are Monarch Airlines, Monarch Aircraft Engineering and Monarch
Travel Group, which houses a number of household-name tour operators including Cosmos
Holidays, Avro and somewhere2stay.com.
The Monarch Group is the UK’s largest privately-owned unified travel group and employs
approximately 3,000 people.
In August 2014, Monarch confirmed it was undergoing a strategic review, with the objective
of defining the optimal structure to take the company forward. As a result, Monarch
required significant change to their Oracle HR and Payroll solution within a very short
timescale, in order to meet the demands of the restructure, and realise the full benefits of
their reorganisation.
THE SOLUTION
Monarch required a partner organisation with knowledge of the Airline industry and fluent in
business process re-engineering associated with the Oracle HCM suite. The decision to utilise
the services of e-Resolve was due to our long standing relationship with the organisation, indepth knowledge of their current business processes, and a track record in delivering the
realisation of business benefits to their organisation within exceptional timescales. e-Resolve
worked closely with Monarch’s HR/Payroll Systems team to identify the requirements,
reacting and adapting proactively in a very fluid environment. The project required significant
re-engineering of the existing solution to incorporate the changes to employees’ terms and
conditions, including, but not limited to:

Impact analysis of the business requirements in conjunction with the existing solution





Simplification of Organisational Structures involving the redesign of the business
layers and employee assignment information
Restructuring of employee’s terms and conditions through:
o New Payments and Deductions, as well as the removal of those payments
made redundant as part of this process
o Moving away from Spinal Point to Grade Rate functionality as a result of the
simplification of Monarch’s grading structure
Standardisation of system integrated processes
Absence related changes incorporating automation of newly identified requirements
due to employee restructure
Changes to Holiday schemes conditions
Furthermore, e-Resolve’s proactive approach to projects, with the intent of ‘Adding Value’ by
simplifying and automating processes where possible, resulted in the development of a
number of solutions including:



Designing user friendly processes, such as Web ADI interfaces for the automation of
Work Structure changes, thereby creating repeatable processes which can be used to
facilitate future restructures, as part of Monarch’s ongoing Business As Usual
activities.
Automation of Assignment record changes through PL/SQL-based concurrent
program logic, utilising Oracle’s published API’s, with appropriate and detailed success
and error reporting.
Automation of Absence upload processes, allowing business areas to upload mass
absenceinformation via a user friendly interface and reducing the overhead entry
time.

“e-Resolve worked hand in hand with myself and the business to ensure the required
