CENTRAL LEADS THE WAY AS PERUVIAN RESTAURANTS DOMINATE LATIN AMERICA’S 50 BEST RESTAURANTS LIST Central wins the title of The S.Pellegrino Best Restaurant in Latin America for second year Astrid y Gastón & Maido are also listed in the top 5 Astrid Gutsche wins the Best Pastry Chef Award, sponsored by Cacao Barry® A total of 9 Peruvian restaurants are featured on the list Peruvian restaurant Central, owned by chef Virgilio Martínez and his wife Pía León, retains its title as The S. Pellegrino Best Restaurant in Latin America, crowning a very successful night for Peruvian gastronomy. The Antiguo Colegio de San Ildefonso in Mexico City hosted the awards ceremony where Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants, sponsored by S.Pellegrino and Acqua Panna, revealed the list that features the very best of this region’s gastronomy. Three of the top five restaurants are located in Peru: Astrid y Gastón ranks at No.3 and Maido at No.5 to complete this triumvirate of Peruvian restaurants, all found within the capital city of Lima. This accolade confirms Lima’s leading status as a gastronomic capital of Latin America, a fact reflected in its hosting of Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants for the two previous years. Astrid y Gastón has been a regular name near the top of the list, winning the first edition and coming in second last year, demonstrating its enduring creativity. Coming in at No.5 is Maido, whose chef Mitsuharu Tsumura has carved an impressive career with his interpretation of Peruvian and Japanese fusion cuisine. His imaginative dishes have established Maido as one of the most beloved Nikkei restaurants in Lima. The victories for Peruvian cuisine also come in the form of individual recognition, as Astrid Gutsche receives the title of Latin America’s Best Pastry Chef, sponsored by Cacao Barry®.This award recognizes her creative output and the amazing work she has produced in charge of the Acurio restaurant group’s desserts section. A new Peruvian restaurant makes it to the list, as Osso Carnicería y Salumería debuts at No.34 with its combination of meat shop and restaurant, offering a wide array of charcuterie products. This young establishment, founded in 2013 by Renzo Garibaldi, has found its way to the preference and taste of Latin American food lovers. Peru becomes the country with the second highest number of restaurants on the list, with nine, only behind Argentina and host country Mexico (10 each). This outstanding group of restaurants consists of: - Central (No.1) - Astrid y Gastón (No.3) - Maido (No.5) - La Mar (No.12) - Malabar (No.20) - Fiesta (No.31) - Osso Carnicería y Salumería (No.34) - La Picantería (No.36) - Rafael (No.50) Mexico is the host country for the awards in 2015 and 2016 as part of a global location strategy that will see all three lists (The World’s 50 Best, Latin America’s 50 Best and Asia’s 50 Best) regularly move to new host cities. Choosing to stage this event in Mexico City is a reflection of the city’s and country’s gastronomic prominence, vibrancy and diversity. It provides a great platform that benefits all restaurants in the region by raising the profile of Latin America’s gastronomy and culinary diversity. Ranking at No.2 is Chilean restaurant Boragó, where chef Rodolfo Guzmán has carved an impressive track record and achieved major recognition. Alex Atala’s D.O.M. from Sao Paulo comes in at No.4. These two restaurants receive The S.Pellegrino Best Restaurant in Chile and Best Restaurant in Brazil awards respectively. As for Argentina, Uruguay, Bolivia and Venezuela, The S.Pellegrino Best Restaurant awards go to Tegui (No.7); Parador La Huella (No.11); Gustu (No.17) and Alto (No.29) respectively. Regarding individual awards, Roberta Sudbrack receives the Veuve Clicquot Latin America’s Best Female Chef title and Enrique Olvera is awarded The Diners Club® Lifetime Achievement Award for Latin America. The surprise of the night is provided by the Brazilian restaurant Lasai, which takes the prize for Highest New Entry, sponsored by LesConcierges, ranking at No.16. The last two special awards are the One To Watch prize, which is awarded to i Latina in Buenos Aires and the Chefs’ Choice Award, sponsored by Modelo, which is received by Chilean pioneer Rodolfo Guzmán of Boragó. William Drew, Editor for Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants, says: “This is our third year in Latin America, celebrating and honouring the best of gastronomy, and we can clearly see why this region’s food includes some of the most exciting and appealing in the world. We witness the creation of marvelous dishes and restaurant experiences from very talented chefs every year, and the trend doesn’t look likely to stop.” How is Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants list configured? The list, and the awards gala, is organised by William Reed Media Group, and neither the organiser, nor any of the sponsors - including the main sponsor and host country - has any influence on the make-up of the list. The list is created by the votes of 252 members of the Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants Academy. The Academy is divided into four regions: Mexico & Central America, South America (North), South America (South), and finally Brazil. Each region has an Academy Chair and 62 other voting members, made up of journalists, gastronomic critics, chefs, restaurateurs and well-known foodies. Each one has to submit seven votes on what they consider the best dining experience they have had over the last 18 months; at least three of those votes have to go to restaurants outside their own country. ### Notes for Editors: Organised by William Reed Media Group Latin America's 50 Best Restaurants list is published by William Reed Media Group which also publishes The World's 50 Best Restaurants, launched in 2002, and Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants, launched in February 2013.
