Where do I begin? Our patients and their loved ones come to us knowing we will care for them with great skill and compassion. Their remarkable trust in us inspires our physicians, staff and volunteers to go above and beyond by striving to provide an excellent experience for every Carol J. Turner patient, every time. Our caregivers bring remarkable energy and commitment to their duties. Whether serving in the cafeteria, the intensive care unit, on an administrative team — or anywhere at any Atrium location — they put our patients first. They are the heart and soul of Atrium Medical Center. Our region is experiencing remarkable growth. Atrium is keeping pace to support the good health of local families and businesses. With our recent expansion to Trenton and Mason, our busy neighbors find it easier to stay healthy with convenient care, close to home or work. Along with Premier Health, we continue to explore new and innovative ways to build healthier communities. Michael D. Stautberg Giving with remarkable passion, our donors help us to do what might be impossible without them. They fund hope with new treatments and technologies, offer a hand up to those in need, and touch the future with endowment gifts. Thanks to their generous gifts, we are putting a mobile mammography unit on the road to help women beat breast cancer. For every way that you support our patients, our mission and our vision, you have my deepest gratitude. Together, we’re making a remarkable difference. Gratefully, Michael J. Schneider Carol J. Turner President and CEO, Atrium Medical Center 2 Atrium Medical Center Foundation Remarkable Success From gifts large and small, from people young and old, from area newcomers and long-time residents come the support that creates healthier communities. Our region is blessed with donors who care deeply and give generously to Atrium Medical Center Foundation. We are honored to provide a meaningful way to transform their support into action. By being intentional about our work, our goal is to ensure that every gift makes the greatest impact. In 2010, we committed to a five-year development plan that has achieved remarkable success for the hospital and our communities. More than $8.6 million has been raised during this period through targeted annual campaigns; thoughtful endowment, estate and tribute gifts; and fun-focused special events. Our Heritage Society, for those who include the Foundation in their will or estate plan, has grown under the leadership of Dr. Bruce and Neila Barnes to include more than 65 members. Our annual estate and tax planning seminar attracts more than 400 regional professionals each year and, most importantly, generates planned gifts that benefit both the donor and local health care. In 2014, donors from all walks of life stepped up to help build healthier communities here in southwest Ohio. Among those we celebrate in this annual report are: – Long-time supporters, such as Don and Raylene Pelfrey and Dr. Bruce and Neila Barnes, who give generously of their time, energy and resources to make life better for others – Businesses, such as Air Products and Chemicals, who believe that a strong hospital benefits their employees and customers – Individuals and families, such as Dr. Dan Butler and Mike and Kirsty Wertz, who are committed to service as a way of life – Foundations that touch the future on behalf of their founders, such as the Robert H. Reakirt Foundation, PNC Bank, Trustee – Organizations, such as Atrium Auxiliary Middletown and the Middletown Area Federation of Women’s Clubs, who unite hearts and hands to benefit our communities With dedicated supporters like these — and the hundreds of others who collaborate with us — Atrium Medical Center Foundation will continue to achieve remarkable success. Please join us as we shape a remarkable future for health care in southwest Ohio. Michael J. Schneider Michael D. Stautberg Chair, Atrium Medical Center Foundation President, Atrium Medical Center Foundation 2014 Annual Report 3 Loyalty DON AND RAYLENE PELFREY Ask Don Pelfrey why he and his wife have been such loyal supporters of Atrium Medical Center Foundation, and he answers without hesitation, paraphrasing golfer Payne Stewart: “Raylene and “We are proud of the Foundation’s scholarship program and the way the Foundation addresses real health care needs in our region.” — Don Pelfrey I have more than we need, so it’s not hard to give back to something lasting and worthwhile.” After serving on the Foundation’s Planned Giving Committee, Don, a Middletown native raised in Monroe, joined the board of directors. That was in 1999, and he hasn’t looked back. In 2001, the Pelfreys co-chaired the Foundation’s dialysis campaign. Both Don’s sister and his niece suffered from kidney disease and required dialysis before receiving kidney transplants. In 2005, Don served as Foundation board chair and today continues as a board member. “I have volunteered to step down from the board,” he says, “but I’m still here!” Don and Raylene married in 1960 while both were in college and Don was an apprentice engineer at Armco. Raylene left her pre-med program and moved to Monroe where Don continued his career, retiring from Armco’s corporate ranks in 1992. He continues to do consulting work while serving on numerous professional and community boards and committees. In 1960, Raylene became the first student at Middletown Hospital’s medical technology school. When the school took a hiatus and state licensing rules changed, Raylene had to stop her education, but she stayed with the hospital as a lab employee until it was time to raise the couple’s children – David, now the father of two, and Leah. 4 Atrium Medical Center Foundation Don and Raylene Pelfrey have established an endowment in honor of Raylene’s mother to provide scholarships to students in ancillary health care programs. Raylene went on to a second career working as mortgaged their house so I could go to college,” a secretary and accounting clerk in Monroe and Raylene explains. “I want to honor that sacrifice Middletown schools and retired in 2006. BRUCE AND NEILA BARNES In 2003, the Atrium Medical Center Foundation board of directors asked L. Bruce Barnes, DDS, and his wife, Neila, to co-chair a new initiative called the Heritage Society, composed of supporters who include the “The Heritage Society is a way to invest in the future of our families.” — Dr. Bruce Barnes Foundation in their wills or estate plans. A dozen years later, Bruce and Neila are still enthusiastic cochairs. Under their stewardship, the Heritage Society has grown to more than 65 members. “Neila and I feel the need to give back and make the community aware of the jewel it has in its midst,” explains Bruce. Bruce and Neila have lived most of their 61-year marriage in Middletown. They raised three children here and are the proud grandparents of six. The couple met while both were students at The Ohio State University. In 1953, after Neila’s graduation, she and Bruce tied the knot and began the journey that eventually led them to Middletown. Upon Bruce’s graduation, the couple moved to Cincinnati, where Bruce began a surgical residency. In 1955, Bruce was called to serve as a dental officer at the Army’s training and maneuvers center in Fort A.P. Hill, Virginia. Two years later, the Barneses returned to Cincinnati, where Bruce resumed his residency and subsequently joined a fellow oral surgeon in private practice in Indianapolis. Bruce’s older brother, John “Jack” Barnes, MD, urged the Barneses to come to Middletown, where he was a surgeon in private practice. “We are very grateful to Jack for his encouragement and support,” Bruce says. “Sadly, he passed away in 2013.” Bruce and Neila have shown their gratitude by giving to the Atrium endowment fund in Jack’s memory. 6 Atrium Medical Center Foundation Both Bruce and Neila have made a significant mark Bruce and Neila believe that Atrium Medical Center on Middletown. With a plant in Middletown, Air Products and “We’re grateful for the relationships we’ve built with our customers that have contributed to Air Products’ success, so we want to give back in ways that matter.” — Lyle McDaniel Chemicals is a Fortune 500 company with 20,000 employees and multiple locations around the planet. Even though the company operates in more than 50 countries, Air Products often thinks locally, especially when it comes to philanthropy. Each Air Products location decides how best to contribute to its local community. Lyle McDaniel manages the plant on Yankee Road in Middletown, a facility that supplies industrial gases to AK Steel, Atrium Medical Center and other area businesses. Lyle and his team have made support of Atrium Medical Center one of Air Products’ priorities. “From the beginning of life to the end, Atrium Medical Center provides valuable services to the employees and families of Air Products,” he says. “We want to do what we can to get behind the good work that Atrium does.” Lyle points out that medical care is just one of the ways that many of his 55 employees depend on Atrium. “Our employees also have family members who work at the hospital in many capacities,” he says. “No matter which way you look at it, supporting Atrium is the right thing to do.” No matter the cause or event, Air Products is always willing to get involved. The company also participates in Foundation fundraising events such as Charity Night at the Tables, the James A. Combs Memorial Golf Tournament and the Steps 4 HEALing run/walk. “The gift Air Products made to the Foundation’s recent Moments Matter campaign is helping patients with stroke and other neurological conditions that affect so many families,” says Kirk Reich, Moments Matter business chair. “These kinds of partnerships with area businesses are essential to keep southwest Ohio healthy and vibrant.” “We’re grateful for the relationships we’ve built with our customers that have contributed to Air Products’ success, so we want to give back in ways that matter,” Lyle says. “Having a strong hospital right here in our community is extremely important. We’re happy to help.” 2014 Annual Report 9 Generosity ROBERT H. REAKIRT FOUNDATION, PNC BANK, TRUSTEE During his lifetime, Cincinnati native Robert H. Reakirt had a strong inclination toward generosity, especially to organizations that promoted patriotism and self-reliance. He received great satisfaction from doing things that helped people. Now, many years later, he’s touching the lives “Mr. Reakirt’s legacy, perpetuated through his estate gift, is changing lives throughout southwest Ohio.” — Michael D. Stautberg of southwest Ohio residents through a grant to Atrium Medical Center Foundation from the Robert H. Reakirt Foundation, PNC Bank, Trustee. Thanks to Mr. Reakirt’s foresight, Atrium Medical Center patients, area health care professionals and members of our community will learn more about preventing, recognizing and treating stroke, the leading cause of disability and number five cause of death in the United States. Mary Alice Koch of PNC Bank, Reakirt Foundation administrator, visited Atrium to learn about educational efforts related to stroke. “I was impressed with Atrium’s abilities to care for people with stroke, Alzheimer’s and other neurological issues. It’s gratifying to know that our foundation will help so many people increase their understanding of stroke and ways to lessen its impact,” she says. Mr. Reakirt accumulated his wealth through commercial real estate ownership in downtown Cincinnati. As a probate attorney, he experienced firsthand how estate giving could touch the future. The Robert H. Reakirt Foundation, PNC Bank, Trustee, was established in 1972, shortly after his death. Today the foundation’s priorities are grants to education, libraries and health care. 10 Atrium Medical Center Foundation Area residents and hospital patients have already through his estate gift, is changing lives throughout benefitted from previous gifts from the Reakirt southwest Ohio,” says Michael D. BUTLER, MD Giving to others can take many forms. For surgeon Daniel A. Butler, MD, his path of service has led him to Atrium Medical Center, Iraq and Afghanistan. Dr. Butler is Atrium’s Trauma Director, an assignment “Giving generously is something my parents taught me, especially through their example.” — Daniel A. Butler, MD he accepted in 1994. When seconds count, this talented physician is dedicated to ensuring that seriously injured patients coming to the Emergency Trauma Center (ETC) receive the prompt assessment, resuscitation, emergency care and stabilization they need. Under his direction, Atrium’s ETC first achieved Level III Trauma Center verification in 2004 and maintains full accreditation as Warren County’s only Level III Trauma Center. Dr. Butler’s expertise in trauma and his passion for serving others led him to join the U.S. Army Reserves in 1991, while completing his surgical residency. A lieutenant colonel, he has been deployed to Iraq two times (2004, 2010) and to Afghanistan once (2012), serving as trauma surgeon on a Forward Surgical Team. As a colonel, he continues to serve as a mentor for young combat medics and nurses in the U.S. Army Reserves. Why did he choose to serve? “The Army has a great need for surgeons. This was an opportunity for me to give back to my country that has done so much for me,” Dr. Butler shares. Born in South Korea and orphaned at an early age, Dr. Butler says doing for others is a value instilled by his adoptive parents, an Indiana physician and his wife. He was the fourth South Korean child they adopted, joining a family of seven children. “Giving 12 Atrium Medical Center Foundation Above left: Dr. Daniel Butler’s parents, Dr. Joe B. and Caroline Butler. Above right: Dr. Butler surrounded by his children. generously is something our parents taught us, especially through their example,” he says. Giving to Atrium Medical Center Foundation fits with Dr. Butler’s principles, and he is grateful that others make the Foundation a priority as well. “I see firsthand the impact that the Foundation has on Atrium Medical Center, including equipment and education right here in the ETC,” he says. “One recent campaign resulted in local paramedics receiving an important new type of tourniquet that I first learned about when I served in an Army field hospital.” Through the years, generous donors have provided PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) bags to area EMS squads; equipment and training to support the hospital’s verification as a Level III Trauma Center; and additional technology that keeps trauma care on the leading edge. Every day, Dr. Butler experiences what it means to patients to have a Level III Trauma Center that’s part of a strong hospital. “Donors to the Foundation should be proud of the difference they’re making — for patients, the hospital and the community,” he concludes. 2014 Annual Report 13 Impact ATRIUM AUXILIARY MIDDLETOWN “They say the true measure of an organization’s worth is in the enduring strength of its mission. We have pursued our mission successfully for a century – and have no plans to slow down,” “The Auxiliary has given the hospital countless hours of service. This frees up funds that we can use to help keep our medical care on the leading edge.” — Carol Turner says Martha Oches, president of Atrium Auxiliary Middletown. On October 6, 2014, more than 100 Atrium Auxiliary Middletown members gathered at Atrium Medical Center for a dinner celebrating the Auxiliary’s 100th anniversary and honoring auxilians past and present for their service. “The evening was filled with memories, tributes, gratitude and pride,” Martha reports. In 1914, when 20-year old Sara Verity (daughter of Armco founder George Verity and his wife, Jean) organized the Girls Welfare Association – precursor to the Auxiliary – she and a handful of her friends made a pledge to the community “to create funds and dispense them for the benefit of needy individuals, as well as to give personal hours of service wherever needed.” Today, Sara’s legacy, Atrium Auxiliary Middletown, boasts nearly 200 members dedicated to furthering the welfare and interest of Atrium Medical Center through fundraising and service. “When funding a capital campaign or special project, we can always count on the Auxiliary early on for their ongoing input and support,” explains James Papakirk, JD, chair of the Foundation’s annual fund committee. “The Auxiliary often provides a lead gift – in many cases, with a two- to three-year pledge – that 14 Atrium Medical Center Foundation serves to both boost our mission and enable the medical staff, volunteers and their families pursuing group to make a significant impact.” education in health care-related fields. They’re continuing a family tradition, since his grandparents originally ran the farm as a fruit orchard. This local landmark keeps Mike and Kirsty — along with sons Kyle, age 14, and Ethan, age 12 — busy year round. So does doing more for others. Kirsty hails from Perth, Australia, and Mike was born and raised in Middletown (Middletown High School, Class of 1986). They met over the internet and wanted to raise their family where Mike’s roots run deep. With their active boys, the family makes commitment to good health part of their busy lives. Mike even shares his expertise as a spinning instructor at the YMCA. When it comes to serving the community, what one of them doesn’t think of in ways to help others, the other one will. Mike was one of the co-founders of Charity Night at the Tables, a fundraiser that benefits Atrium Medical Center and Atrium Family YMCA. He chuckles when he remembers how the popular event started. “I had been a volunteer fundraiser for the YMCA, calling people and asking for 16 Atrium Medical Center Foundation Above: Kirsty and Mike Wertz at Charity Night at the Tables. Charity Night at the Tables. The Wertzes are frequent volunteers, helping out where needed. The fifth “It really is selfishness for us to give, you know?” annual Charity Night was held in July. Mike says. “It makes us feel good when we help out, so actually we’re the ones who benefit the most.” Last summer Mike put his creativity and bartending skills to work to benefit the Foundation. As a 2014 Annual Report 17 Stewards ATRIUM MEDICAL CENTER FOUNDATION It all starts with just one question: What do our communities need for their good health? The answers can change lives. With 30 years of experience in touching lives and improving health, Atrium Medical Center Foundation will keep finding new ways to change lives, in partnership with our donors. Take the da Vinci® surgical system, which came to Atrium Medical Center in 2010 thanks to generous donors to Atrium Medical Center Foundation’s Imagine a Cure campaign. Now, men and women with cancer and other serious conditions can benefit from robotic surgery, close to home, that enables quicker healing, less pain and a faster return to busy lives. More babies in our region are starting life at full term, fewer die from unsafe sleep practices and more benefit from breastfeeding. And when the unthinkable happens, grieving parents spend final moments with their infant in a comfortable, private room. Caring donors to the Foundation’s Little Blessings campaign in 2011 helped to make all of this possible. Stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, epilepsy, ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) — all can steal some of our most precious abilities and disrupt hopes and plans. Through the recent Moments Matter campaign, hundreds of donors dug deep to offer patients with these conditions new hope with advanced treatments and prevention. And now, the Every Woman, Everywhere campaign aims to help stop breast cancer by putting a mobile mammography unit on the road, making it easier for women in our region to get a potentially lifesaving mammogram. 18 Atrium Medical Center Foundation Raising funds for real, pressing health care needs in southwest Ohio is at the heart of the Foundation’s work. “Fulfilling our mission of building healthier communities in southwest Ohio, we bring together donors who want to make a difference — close to home — with projects that need their support to become reality,” says Michael J. Schneider, Foundation chair. The Foundation faithfully stewards all resources entrusted to us. Since 2010, our endowments and investments have grown from just under $15 million to nearly $20 million at the end of 2014. The number of endowments has nearly doubled with recent campaigns. Many endowments are established by donors to honor a loved one. Each fund’s annual income is used only for the purpose designated by the donor. Endowments ensure that health care improvements will continue in our region for generations to come. With 30 years of experience in touching lives and improving health, Atrium Medical Center Foundation will keep finding new ways to change lives, in partnership with our donors. We’ll never stop answering that one important question. Over the last 10 years, generous donors to Atrium Medical Center Foundation have helped to fund, top to bottom: the da Vinci® surgical system; improvements in emergency and trauma care; enhancements in neuroscience care, including Atrium’s Telestroke capabilities so stroke experts can remotely diagnose patients with stroke; and open heart surgery. 2014 Annual Report 19 Fun and Friendship FUNDRAISING EVENTS Each year, hundreds of Atrium Medical Center Foundation supporters gather for fun and friendship that benefits patients and their loved ones at Atrium Medical Center. Plus, this fourth annual festival included the first Steps 4 HEALing 5K run/walk. Proceeds of the day’s events raised $9,000 for Atrium’s HEAL (Help Endure a Loss) Program. A devoted group of volunteers goes above and beyond to plan and staff all aspects of the festival and run/walk so that families can enjoy themselves with others who understand. “These volunteers think of HEAL support group members as their friends and family,” says Tammy Laine, vice president, market development, Atrium Medical Center. “We’re grateful for their deep commitment to being there for each other and the community.” 20 Atrium Medical Center Foundation Charity Night at the Tables More than 200 guests had fun trying their luck James A. The next generations of her family include another nurse, a doctor, a physician’s assistant and another working on a medical degree. Her legacy also lives on in this part of the country, even though Lorna (nee Emley) and her husband, Dan, relocated to California in 1989. Each year since Lorna passed away in 2005, Dan has faithfully made memorial gifts to Atrium Medical Center Foundation. Lorna Emley Anslinger, RN, a 1946 graduate of Middletown Hospital School of Nursing, is remembered by her husband with annual gifts to Atrium Medical Center Foundation. “I was overseas in World War II when Lorna was in nursing school,” recalls Dan. “She wrote fondly about her time there and how much she was learning. I saved all the letters.” The Anslingers married in August 1946, one week after Lorna graduated. They raised three sons. “Dan’s gifts are a tribute to his and Lorna’s love for each other and their concern for the health of others,” says Jessica Woodard, development manager, Atrium Medical Center Foundation. “We are grateful to be a part of their legacy.” Friends: $1 to $249 continued 34 Ms. Jenna Petdorf Judi Rhoades Mr. and Mrs. Robert E. Stautberg LOCAL BOB EVANS RESTAURANTS HELP HEAL Good food for a great cause was the focus in November, when 11 area Bob Evans restaurants earned money for the HEAL (Help Endure a Loss) program endowment at Atrium Medical Center. With the popular “dine and donate” program, Atrium employees, their families and friends received a discount on their meal – and Bob Evans made a donation to HEAL. The fundraiser started in November 2013 when General Manager Dave Lovejoy held the promotion at his Bob Evans location near the Towne Mall. After the success of the effort, he approached Area General Manager Bob Orr about extending it in 2014 to locations in Springboro, Miamisburg, West Chester, Mason, Lebanon, Sharonville, Finneytown, Cincinnati Mills and Blue Ash. “We’ve all been affected by the loss of a loved one and realize in part how difficult it would be to lose a child,” says Dave. “We are happy to support Atrium and the HEAL program, which helps families through a very difficult time.” Dave says diners can look forward to the return of the HEAL fundraiser in 2015. Because they wanted the dollars collected to go to work locally, the VFW contributed to Atrium Medical Center Foundation’s Every Woman, Everywhere campaign. The VFW and generous donors throughout southwest Ohio joined together to help put a mobile mammography unit on the road, making it more convenient for women to get potentially lifesaving mammograms. “Most of us have connections to Atrium and wanted the money to help neighbors and friends,” reports Kathy Muterspaw, outgoing VFW Auxiliary president. She says that many family members of the VFW post rely on Atrium’s Wilbur and Mary Jean Cohen’s Women Center for mammograms and breast health care. The fundraising also raised awareness. “October was also a good time to remind each other to make sure we get our mammograms,” she says.
