ST. JOHN NEUMANN “…for he gave you rains from heaven and fruitful seasons, and filled you with nourishment and gladness for your hearts.” – Acts 14:17 As I reflect on this past Labor Day weekend, I cannot help but grin from ear to ear. Festival season was filled with some of the best teamwork, commitment, dedication, and spirit I could ask for. When I stepped into this role as parish business manager four months ago, I knew I was joining a great community, I just didn’t know how wonderful this congregation truly was! For those of you who never experienced a Saint John Neumann Festival season, months of hard work and planning go into making this weekend a reality. At my first planning meeting in May, essentially the entire Festival was already planned! Regardless, our Festival chairs devoted hour after hour to ensure all bases were covered. From committee chairs to booth chairs, not one detail was left out. Personally, I had the pleasure of attending these meetings. What I loved about them was though we accomplished our goals at individual meetings, they were always fun and filled with laughter and jokes. As we approached Festival weekend, we couldn’t help but feel great about our accomplishments and strides. The days leading up to Festival were perfect. Weather was sunny and pleasant, setup efforts were smooth sailing. The weather forecast was on our side! We were ready for anything and excited for a clear weekend. Enter Friday. Beautiful day. Hot weather. Sunshine. Who wouldn’t be ecstatic to end a week with games, rides, food, drinks, and live music? We were ready…and nothing could stop us. Hello rain! It rained, it poured, it sent lightning bolts across the sky. Then it rained some more. That 90 degree day turned 70 degrees and soggy, quickly. You know what? Instead of complaints and regrets, what I saw completely blew me away. I saw you. I saw the SJN community locking arms together and making the most of it. I saw umbrellas popping up, children stomping in puddles, I heard laughter, and I watched completely unfazed families rounding the booths with bundles of Bars and Bells, funnel cakes, and plates of bratwurst in hand. I watched generations of families from our Festival chairs to their sons and daughters and grandchildren, all working together to make this event a wild success. It made me smile. It even brought tears to my eyes. Saturday and Sunday were no different. Rain. Lightening. Thunder. Puddles. Sopping wet plates of Hammon’s pulled pork and LaRosa’s Pizza. Guess what? Just like Whoville after the Grinch stole Christmas, St. John Neumann community continued singing and dancing until the rain disappeared. I simply cannot thank each and every one of you enough for your hard work and dedication to making my very first SJN Festival a memorable one. The truth is, without you this Festival would cease to exist. Your involvement as booth chairs, volunteers, or simply supporters of the weekend do not go unnoticed. It’s not how we respond to the good times, but the periods of challenge in our life, that make us the people we are. Watching this community pull together despite the storms demonstrated that when this parish works together, we can survive anything the world throws at us! Marisa Lengerich, Business Manager Thank you to everyone who helped make our Parish Festival a success! A great big thank-you to our committee and to all of the volunteers who put in so many hours before, during and after the weekend. Thanks to the Scouts for giving their time with parking and the police officers who helped keep us safe during the Festival. What a wonderful celebration for our parish family and neighbors. The Staff of St. John Neumann Catholics Come Home… If you are a Catholic who has been away from the Church for a while or know someone who has, we welcome you to join our classes this September. Our first class will be held on Wednesday, September 16th. These classes, offered once a week, offer an opportunity to share your faith journey and to learn more about the Church and all it has to offer. Everyone is welcome, no matter where they are from or where they are on their journey. If interested, please contact Emily Branscum in the Parish Office at 742-0953, ext. 19. Praying for Vocations….Thank you to those taking the Vocation Chalice. To have the Vocation Chalice in your home, call Diane Sova at 330-6440 or the Parish Office at 742-0953. Prayer materials are provided. Vocation Chalice for the week of September 13 ~ Gary & Mary Ann Burns Bible Study What is it? It’s a small community that reads, learns, and reflects on the Bible and its meaning in their lives. Often, Catholics are reluctant to participate in Bible Studies, thinking they are not well versed in the Bible. Our Bible Study will be reading and discussing the book, “Bible Basics for Catholics.” This is an opportunity for anyone to become part of a community on a journey to better understand the Bible. Please join us! The sessions are scheduled for: Monday evenings, 7:00-8:30 p.m. in the Youth Room September 14 & 21, October 5 & 12 Each week is a “stand-alone,” so come for as many or few sessions as you are led and are able. There is no charge; the parish furnishes all materials. If you wish to make a donation, the cost of the book to the parish is $4.00 – You can either put it in the collection at the weekend liturgy you attend or you can put it in the kiosk in the Gathering Space. So, is the Spirit leading you to join us? Know that you are most welcome. Please contact Dottie Foster at 742-0953, ext. 13 or email to [email protected] for more information or to sign up. New Altar Server Training: Would you like to serve the parish in the special role of server? This wonderful ministry is open to students in fourth grade through high school. This is a great opportunity for youth to learn about giving of themselves as part of this community. Help your children learn more about their faith and to begin to build a foundation of evangelization and stewardship by serving at Mass and other liturgical functions. The next altar server training will be held: Sunday, September 13, 2015, from 12:30-2:00 p.m. and Sunday September 27, 2015, from 2:00-3:30 p.m. In the Church Youth must attend both training dates. Please call Scott Stephens at 470-2307 or email at scottstephenslisw@ gmail.com to sign up for training. With summer wrapping up and children back at school, we at the Food Pantry are getting ready for Thanksgiving! Hard to believe but it will be here sooner than we think. We would like to ask the parishioners at St. John the Baptist, St. John Neumann and Corpus Christi to once again support our Thanksgiving dinner giveaway. Following are the food items that are needed for the Thanksgiving dinners: Canned vegetables, yams, fruit, gravy, Jell-O, cake or brownie mix, icing, boxed potatoes, and stuffing. If you are able to donate some of the items above, you can put the items in the normal drop locations at your parish by Sunday, November 8. Cash or gift cards can be dropped at the food pantry during open hours of operation, which are Monday and Thursday, 10:00-11:30 a.m. and Tuesday evenings, 6:00-7:30 p.m. or at Corpus Christi Parish offices during regular business hours. TWENTY-FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME – SEPTEMBER 13, 2015 Parents: We continue to look for opportunities and materials that will serve to support you in forming your children’s faith lives. We welcome your feedback – to Dottie at [email protected] or 7420953, ext. 13. These activities come from a program called “The Meal Box.” The intent is to provide mealtime conversation starters that will engage your children and tips for the parents to apply the general theme to the family’s faith life. Table Discussion: If you could carve four new faces into the side of Mt. Rushmore, whose faces should they be? Why do you think your choice(s) deserve such a place of honor? Parents: Talk about the word “honor.” The commandments tell us to “honor our Father and Mother, What does “honor” look like, what actions would we say are “honorable?” Who else do we honor? Is there a patron or favorite saint or heavenly person that you honor? Why does he or she deserve your honor? Activity: During this week, share with your family a real experience or situation where you turned to an honored person. What was the result? Share, too, how you show honor. 40 St. Anthony/Judge Keefe ~ Silent Ignatian Retreat ~ October 16-18, 2015 St. Anthony/Judge Keefe Ignatian Weekend retreat will be presented by Richard Bollman, SJ, on October 16-18, 2015.
