ANNUAL REPORT 2014 Enriching the Quality of Life in the Chautauqua Region Thank You To Our Yearlong Sponsors High caliber engineering solutions for customer’s unique & specific design challenges RANDY SWEENEY Executive Director Just like a tower of blocks cannot stand without the support of a solid foundation, our foundation would not be here without the support of our community. The individuals and organizations that make a conscious effort, every day, to improve the quality of life in this region are what keep us invested and growing. Together, we are building a strong and thriving community. PAMELA NOLL Board of Directors President This year we introduced six new categories as part of our Fund for the Region; Arts and Culture, Community, Environmental, Greatest Need, Human Services, and Sports and Leisure. These are the monies that the Board of Directors can use at their discretion to address bigger needs of the region such as, issues with the lake, physician recruitment, and neighborhood revitalization, just to name a few things currently on our radar. She graduated from the WCA School of Nursing in 1951 and worked as a registered ter ered nurse in the Emergency Department, Intensive Care re Unit and 3-C Unit. Although she retired in 1992, Mrs. Trippi continued nued to volunteer her talents in her community, serving g as a nurse at the American Red Cross and Lutheran Social ocial Services until she passed away in July 2014. In memory of her dedication for serving others, Mrs. Trippi’s family created the Elizabeth J. Trippi Nursing Scholarship Fund to assist students in the Jamestown Community College School of Nursing. The Veterans Services Agency also works with the Chautauqua County Office for the Aging to provide home repairs to veterans and their dependents. Over the past two years, the foundation’s Chautauqua County Assistance Fund has granted more than $120,000 to assist with roof replacements, handicap-accessible bathrooms and wheelchair ramps, many times allowing families to remain living comfortably in n their own home. John Mueller of Falconer, a United States Army veteran, recently had a wheelchair airr ai ramp installed at his home due to the grants awarded to the Office for the Aging. “Whoever (the donors) are, thank you, thank you for this beautiful gift,” Mr. Muellerr said. 5 The Arts and Culture Block provides a wide range of support to programs and initiatives that inspire generations. 6 After a summer of renovations and demolition, students and instructors at Infinity Visual and Performing Arts kicked off the 2014-2015 season in a new location, inside the Lynn Building, 301 East Second Street, across from Jamestown High School. One of the most motivating factors in looking for a new location was the increase in student enrollment. Over the past two years, enrollment in private lessons has increased from 178 to 320 students. The new location has provided an extra 5,500 square feet of usable classroom space and an additional 11 rehearsal rooms. “There are lots of things our students ents t can do with their time, not all of it is good. Infinity provides a safe, supervised ised place for them to learn skills and build ld d their confidence,” Shane Hawkins, Executive Director of Infinity said. Since 2005, Infinity has been offering ring classes to students of all ages interested in art, dance, music, theater er and literature experiences. For more information on any of their programming, visit infinityperformingarts.org. The Fund for the Region granted $200,000 to the National Comedy Center project. Slated to open in August 2016, the center is designed to be a national attraction based on the celebration of comedy: the craft and its contributors, and embodies Lucille Ball’s vision for her hometown. 7 The Sports and Leisure Block provides a wide range of support to programs and initiatives that create enjoyment. M embers e of the Boys and Girls Club of Jamestown J Ja are spending their summer at Ca C am mp p Hiak Tilikum learning to play golf, creating Camp arts and crafts, and taking nature walks. Grants from the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation’s Karl Peterson Fund and Joyce Richards Shelgren Trust to Assist and Aid Fund helped purchase art supplies and sporting equipment for campers to use. 8 Fans of all ages are looking forward to cheering on this new team. After 25 years of playing under the lights at Diethrick Park, the Jamestown Jammers relocated to West Virginia at the end of the 2014 season. In November, baseball fans were thrilled when City Officials and community leaders announced the Prospect League Jamestown Jammers would take their place. The Prospect League is an amateur summer league that features college players from throughout the country. The league itself is comprised of 12 teams and is located primarily in the Midwest. Along with New York, it also has teams in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Missouri. A native of Jamestown, Bob Benson graduated from Falconer High School and, following graduation, joined the United States Army Air Corps and served as a sergeant during World War II. When his military career ended, he was employed as a sheet metal worker at Sprinchorn Company, Inc. until his retirement in 1985. Wars Pros. For more than 20 years, he served as a coach for Jamestown’s Midget Football League and Little League Baseball teams. But more important than winning, Bob was teaching his athletes life lessons while serving as a role model. Keeping his passion for athletics in mind when he passed away in June 2014, his family created The Robert Benson Fund at the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation to provide financial support to the Jamestown Athletics were always a big part of Bob’s life and he even played recreational Midget Football League and Babe Ruth baseball teams. basketball in the U.S. Army Air Corps, local YMCA and Veterans of Foreign 9 The Environmental Block provides a wide range of support to programs and initiatives that promote our area’s natural beauty. F or the 33rd year in a row, Jamestown was named a Tree City by the National Arbor Day Foundation and we celebrated by planting a new tree in front of the Fenton History Center. Grants from the Fund for the Region to the City of Jamestown Parks, Recreation and Conservation Department, help provide the means to plant trees all over the city. 10 A committee of local dragon boat enthusiasts approached the Pan American Dragon Boat Association about holding a Dragon Boat demonstration in Chautauqua County. In June, community members of all ages had the opportunity to paddle the 42-foot-long boat along the Chadakoin River. In August 2015, the first annual Dragon Boat Festival will be held in Celoron Park and all proceeds will benefit Chautauqua Lake. One of the organizations to receive funding from this event is the newly established Chautauqua Lake Watershed ed and Management Alliance which brings s together towns and villages, the Chautauqua Lake Association, Chautauqua ua County Soil and Water Conservation District, Chautauqua Watershed Conservancy, foundations and nonprofit organizations with a goal to improve the health of Chautauqua Lake. e. A young woman who had an eye for creating beautiful landscapes, Ryan Kiblin’s memory will live on in those who knew her personally, and those who walk the grounds unds ds at Chautauqua Institution for years to come. Ms. Kiblin had just started her 13th season at Chautauqua Institution, 11th as supervisor of grounds, gardens and landscaping, when she, and her infant daughter Emma Lee, passed away after a brief rief illness. Her family created the Ryan Mary Kiblin Memorial Fund to provide financial assistance to the salutatorians of Sherman High School. A 1998 graduate of Sherman High School, Ms. Kiblin was named salutatorian of her class. 11 The Human Services Block provides a wide range of support to programs and initiatives that help others. When John Alfred Johnson walked into John Sellstrom’s office over 20 years ago, Sellstrom had no idea the legacy he was about to help create. “(Johnson) walks in one day and wants to hire me as an attorney,” Sellstrom said. “So we started talking and I asked him how he found me. He says, ‘I know you represent the government of Sweden (as Consul), and if you’re good enough for the government of Sweden, you’re good enough for me.’” Johnson had worked hard and invested his money in the stock market following the lesson -- if it’s worth buying, it’s worth keeping. However, as his estate grew, Johnson’s vision for his newfound wealth needed some guidance. “He said to me, ‘You understand these things, but I don’t and I don’t know what to do. I depend on you,’” Sellstrom said. Sellstrom’s legal background and knowledge of community issues, paired with Johnson’s desire to do good in his community led him to create a memorial trust that at the time of his death would be administered by Sellstrom to support the charitable needs of community organizations in the Chautauqua region. Since Johnson’s death in November 1995 at the age of 90, The Johnson Foundation, as it has come to be known, has administered millions of dollars and kept Johnson’s memory alive. 12 A Humble Beginning Born in Smoland, Sweden, Johnson immigrated to the United States in 1927 to live ive with his brother, Oscar. Together they bought a plot of land on Buffalo Street Extension and built a house. With hard work and determination in his blood, the 22-year-old Johnson began working with his brother building houses for other Swedish families in the community. He eventually took a job with Marlin Rockwell and worked there for 27 years before retiring in 1967. The brothers never married and most of their family remained in Sweden. When Oscar passed away in 1976 and left his estate to his brother, Johnson decided ed to sell the house and move into a smaller place at the Hunt Road Apartments. Over time, Sellstrom and Johnson became close friends, bonding over common interests and Swedish stories. The two even developed a system for calling each other, letting the phone ring once, e, hanging up and calling right back. The last time Sellstrom spoke to Johnson was right before Thanksgiving and they discussed their plans for dinner. “Toward the end of the phone call, he says, ‘Thank you for everything you’ve done e for me,’” Sellstrom recalls, “and the next day, he dies.” Building a Legacy Sellstrom and his wife, Carole, have served as co-trustee and executive director, respectively, of The Johnson Foundation since Johnson’s death. As they reflect on the he nearly 20 years of grant making and community support they have given, the one thing they focus on, and constantly ask themselves before making any decisions is, “Would John like this?” According to Sellstrom, although Johnson was a Swedish citizen until the 1950s, he loved his community and would have done anything to help others. “It’s been wonderful. It’s been a great 20 years of interesting people and getting to areas I’ve never been before,” Mrs. Sellstrom added. A New Life While the original intent of the memorial trust was to only distribute Johnson’s estate for 20 years, the Sellstroms have found a way to make sure the Johnson name me is synonymous with doing good, forever. Recently, The Johnson Foundation granted $100,000 to the Jamestown Board of Public Utilities to create The John Alfred and Oscar Johnson Memorial Trust/BPU Good Neighbor Fund. This fund will be administered by the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation and will assist BPU customers who, for unforeseen circumstances, are unable to pay their monthly BPU bill. For more information on this program, contact the BPU at 661-1680. “We know this would have been right up his (Johnson’s) alley,” Sellstrom said. “All ll he wanted to do was help people. My charge from John was to give his money away y according to what he left for me and I think we have done an awful lot of good with his is money. We’ve flown under the radar for the past 20 years and we have been very happy ppy p doing so, but now it’s time they (John and Oscar) get the recognition they deserve.”” 13 Education The Education CommunityBlock Blockprovides Providesa awide widerange rangeof of support support to to programs programs and and initiatives initiatives that that bring people foster growthtogether. and learning. When Guardian Life Insurance Company of America asked insurance representatives from all over the country to share client stories to be recorded and shared in its annual report, locally owned and operated Alliance Advisory Group looked no further than Thomas Wade. Tom has built lasting relationships with his clients in the Randolph area for more than 40 years. His professional relationship with the Carpenter family has extended into a second generation and, more importantly, a friendship. With permission from his clients, Tom shared the story of Michael and Marianne Carpenter and how together they made plans for the future in case of an unexpected life event. “His (Michael’s) family is the most important thing to him-everything he does in life revolves around Marianne and the kids,” said Tom, Alliance Advisory Group Financial Representative. “We developed their financial plan with that in mind and made sure we were able to protect Mike and Marianne’s top asset-themselves.” Marianne was also passionate about her children and after the youngest started school, she followed her dream and enrolled in the BOCES School of Nursing Program. Not long after classes started, she was diagnosed with lung cancer and forced to withdraw to focus on her treatment. Her classmates and the faculty at BOCES kept in touch with Marianne until her passing in May 2013. Moved by the Carpenters’ story, Guardian Life Insurance Company of America, which Alliance Advisory Group is a part of, decided to donate $10,000 to Michael’s favorite charity. Thinking of his wife, Michael chose her scholarship fund. The Marianne Carpenter Memorial Scholarship was established by Marianne’s family and friends to assist a parent enrolled in the Practical Nursing Program at the Erie 2-Chautauqua-Cattauraugus BOCES program. The scholarship is administered by the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation. In addition to being Marianne’s dream, Michael had another special reason for establishing the fund and allocating the $10,000 donation there. “While she (Marianne) was undergoing treatment, we saw nurses every day,” he said. “They made her smile when things weren’t going well.” 14 In the year since the Joint oin intt Neighborhood Project closed ose sed d its doors, those closest to o th the e organization continue making aki king ng positive changes in the community. Recently the Joint Neighborhood CEO Endowment Fund was created to support Jamestown residents looking to further their education at Jamestown Community College and Jamestown Business College. Pictured are the first recipients of this scholarship. The Dr. Terry R. Schultz Scholarship Fund was established by Dr. Schultz’s family to assist second year Jamestown Community College students furthering their education at medical or optometry school. Carlson “Unsung Hero” Award Surrounded by family and friends, Bethany Durow of Randolph was awarded the Axel W. Carlson “Unsung Hero” Award on May 29, 2014 at Heritage Village Retirement Community by Bob Young, committee chairman. A senior at Randolph High School, Bethany has been volunteering at Heritage since she was 10 years old. “I got involved with Heritage by shadowing my mom and doing volunteer work together,” she said. During her time at Heritage, Bethany has cleaned for residents, taken care of their pets, organized events on campus, taken non-mobile residents for walks to visit friends and read to the sight impaired. She also started a music enrichment program on campus, playing music from various decades and encouraging residents to participate. According to Shirley Reynolds, one of the residents Bethany reads to on a regular basis and the one who nominated her for this award, she has enriched the lives of many seniors living in the Heritage community. “I have always loved reading, and when I lost my sight, I was saddened by the fact that I would be unable to enjoy the plot of a good book or see nature’s changing seasons anymore,” Shirley wrote in her nomination form. “Bethany has not only given me back my love of reading, but she explains all that is going (on) around me so that it feels that I am able to experience life, with sight, through her again.” In addition to her work at Heritage, Bethany volunteers in her school and community by participating in food drives, American Red Cross blood drives, local children’s camps, and tutoring and mentoring services. Bethany graduated from Randolph in June 2014 and is currently a studying Biology/Pre-Med at Oglethorpe University. It was with great sadness we learned of the passing of Nancy Gaden, in February 2015. Nancy was an extraordinary member of our community who enjoyed sharing her love of music with others. In 2003, she was recognized for her many volunteer efforts with our Axel W. Carlson “Unsung Hero” Award. We will miss having Nancy in our community, but know her memory lives on in those she knew and loved. 16 Jeanette Carlson 2014 John D. Hamilton Community Service Award Recipient After graduating from Jamestown Community College and attending the e State University of New York College at Fredonia, Jeanette began a career as a church business administrator at First st Presbyterian Church. On September 4, 2014, during a reception at Moon Brook Country Club, Jeanette Carlson was awarded the John D. Hamilton Community Service Award for her dedication to helping others in the Chautauqua region. Jeanette first experienced serving others when she was a sixth grade student at Lillian Dickson Elementary School and led her class in packing shoeboxes for wounded soldiers at a nearby hospital. Jeanette has volunteered at a number of organizations and served on the Boards of Directors at the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation, ation, Robert H. Jackson Center, CODE, Inc.,, an and Kids @ Promise/2XL where she was a also lso ls o a founder. In 2002, she was recognized ed as the United Way Volunteer of the Year earr for her work with the Kids @Promise/2XL /2XL L program. Today, Jeanette and her husband, Gordon, live on the Edgewood Communities nities campus. She is still very involved with h community organizations and currently tly serves on the Edgewood Communities s Social Committee, planning events on n campus. The Relief Zone of Frewsburg was the winner of the Chautauqua Region Community unity Foundation’s second #GivingTuesday Facebook Contest and received a $5,000 grant. nt. Over 1,000 people from all over the Chautauqua region participated in the contest by “liking” their favorite organization’s photo that was posted on the Community Foundation’s Facebook page. Other participants included St. Susan Center, Child Advocacy Program, Court Appointed Special Advocates of Chautauqua County and Community Helping Hands. 17 2014 GIFTS MADE IN MEMORY OF A Abbey H. If you have already decided to gift a portion of your estate to the foundation, or to a certain fund the foundation administers, please contact our office at (716) 661-3390 to be enrolled in our honorary society. Every year, members of our Legacy Society gather for lunch and the foundation prepares a program to show them the good in our community and how their future gift will continue making an impact in our area. This year, we gathered at The Lawson Boating Heritage Center in Bemus Point. 2014 LEGACY SOCIETY MEMBERS Anonymous Anonymous Anonymous Samuel Alessi Gretta Archer David “Skip” and Joyce* Axelson David and Chris Bartkowiak Donna Beal Gordon and Sally Black Lyman and Janette Buck Gordon and Jeanette Carlson Babette Cecchini Edwin Danielson* Henry and Julie Danielson Russell and June Diethrick Gail Donus Jake Ensign Verna Feather Allen* and Margaret* Findlay Verna Feather Roger Gilbert Robert Hagstrom* Douglas and Carol Hay Cristie Herbst Forest Herron Celeste Kerns Lynn Kinnear Bonnie Larkin Mark and Lisa Lynde Frances Marra Doug and Lamae McCullor Robert Miller 37 Joanne Nelson Albert Nottage* Mary Ann Green Olson Gladys Peterson Gregory and Cindy Peterson Maurice and Doris Roach Priscilla Robbins Jacob and Nora Schrantz Patricia Smith Kenneth and Lois Strickler Robert and Patricia Sundell Roland and Doris* Swanson Randall Sweeney Janet (Vanstrom) Wahlberg *These members are lovingly remembered for their generosity Non-Profit Org.
