A COMMUNITY UPDATE FROM CENTRAL CAROLINA TECHNICAL COLLEGE
FALL
2016
STEM, CENTRAL CAROLINA TECHNICAL COLLEGE AND THE FUTURE
There is a shift in education taking
place today. It is a move toward
science, technology, engineering
and math, better known as STEM.
These four areas of study are where
emerging, well-paying, high-demand
careers lie. Central Carolina Technical
College is a supporter and producer
of STEM education and training. Two
model examples of STEM careers that
CCTC offers are mechatronics and
nursing. Both occupations require
a high level of understanding and
integration of science, technology,
engineering and math.
producing graduates who are ready,
experienced and comfortable to
work in their chosen profession.
Central Carolina Technical College
also sees the importance of building
a strong foundation in its future
students. Offering Dual Enrollment
for qualified high school juniors and
seniors can jump start their college
career while gaining true college
experience.
Additionally, CCTC introduced
Central Carolina Scholars this
year, which provides two years of
tuition-free education to recent high school graduates in Clarendon,
Kershaw, Lee and Sumter counties. A dual enrolled high school
student could potentially graduate from high school with two years
of credits from CCTC and ultimately complete an associate degree in
less than two years!
Noah Scurry works in the new state-of-the-art Robotics Lab in the
Advanced Manufacturing Technology Training Center (AMTTC).
To keep up the momentum and stay abreast of the times, CCTC
partners closely with local and national industries to find out
what they seek in their future employees. Companies like Boeing,
Continental Tire the Americas, Nucor Building Systems and Palmetto
Health Tuomey are looking for a pipeline of ready-to-go, skilled
workers to keep their companies operating and to advance up the
corporate ladder.
The opening of the Advanced Manufacturing Technology Training
Center (AMTTC) in 2015 shows CCTC’s commitment to being at
the forefront of the engineering and industrial career field. The
state-of-art Health Sciences Center provides CCTC students with
simulated work environments and hands-on internships, therefore
CCTC attributes its on-going growth and relevance to its
partnerships with area industries and schools. The college is
committed to providing a ready workforce as well as meeting the
needs of transfer students. With the addition of STEM into middle
school curriculum, and options such as Dual Enrollment for high
school juniors and seniors, students can graduate from college and
be career ready. Learn more! Visit our website at cctech.edu.
CCTC CELEBRATES 483 NEW GRADUATES
In May, CCTC held two commencement ceremonies for 483 new graduates.
Joseph McFadden, Warden of Lieber Correctional Institution, was honored
with an Outstanding Alumni Award during the morning ceremony, while
Felicia Heyward, a Family Nurse Practitioner at Colonial Family Practice in
Sumter, was honored during the afternoon ceremony. Engineering Graphics
Technology Program Manager David Tuders was recognized as this year’s
recipient of the E.C. “Red” Kneece Teaching Excellence Award.

CCTC HOSTS SECOND ANNUAL SUMMER INSTITUTE FOR
AREA SCHOOL COUNSELORS
CCTC held its second annual School Counselor Summer Institute from July 18 to 22,
welcoming nearly 15 area school guidance counselors onto its campus to learn about the 50+
programs of study and student support services the college offers to residents in Clarendon,
Kershaw, Lee and Sumter counties.
KERSHAW COUNTY CAMPUS
EXPANSION ON SCHEDULE
Central Carolina Technical College’s
Kershaw County Campus addition
will be approximately 40,000 square
feet and is scheduled for completion
in Fall 2017. Architectural design for
the new building is being handled by
architectural design firm McMillanPazdan-Smith Architecture. Get
expansion updates on cctech.edu or
CCTC’s Facebook page.
The School Counselor Summer Institute was made possible thanks to the South Carolina
Technical College System, System Outreach Initiative Grant, the Sumter Chamber of
Commerce, Sumter Smarter Growth Initiative and Sumter Industrial Association.
The counselors spent a week receiving in-depth descriptions and tours of each academic
program and service offered by Central Carolina.
CCTC DESIGNS AND PRINTS TWO PROSTHETIC HANDS
In April, six-year-old McCray Eaddy visited CCTC’s Advanced Manufacturing Technology
Training Center (AMTTC) for a fitting of a 3D printed prosthetic hand. This is the second
prosthetic hand CCTC’s Engineering Graphics Technology (EGT) Program has printed this
year. The first prototype went to seventh-grader Connor Morgan in February.
Using a publicly shared design, EGT Program Manager David Tuders and his students
created and modified a new hand specifically designed for McCray. Tuders and his
students enjoy the challenge of these bioengineering projects, especially seeing the end
result benefit someone in need. These projects were taken on by CCTC at no cost to the
families. It’s another way Central Carolina Technical College supports and partners with
the local community.

NEW LOGO UNVEILED
At the end of July, CCTC launched a new
logo, marking the first change in its
brand since 1992.
Earlier this year, the South Carolina
Technical College System rolled out the
“I Made It...you can, too!” STEM initiative
to promote science, technology,
engineering and math career fields and
their educational pathways. STEMrelated career fields offer countless
jobs with great futures, good wages
and opportunities for advancement.
While affordability and quick entry into
the workforce aspects of STEM-related
careers standout, there is no denying
the statistics and real-life successes that
have validated these occupations. Learn
more about this initiative and CCTC
success stories at cctech.edu/academics/
