Techfit Club for Middle School Students
Professor Brad Harriger, director of the school of Technology
Manufacturing Center at Purdue University, visited our Middle School
Techfit program last week. He observed a daily schedule, participated
in the daily activities, and gave helpful suggestions for the exergame
which will be presented at Purdue on December 11. The Techfit group
will present their exergame to students, parents, community, and
school board the week of December 8.
Techfit (Teaching Engineering Concepts to Harness Future Innovators and Technologists) is the result of a collaboration between
four college professors. All four were originally at Purdue and now
two are at Charlotte. They received a grant that is covering the costs,
and the materials are donated by companies. Middle school students
could fill out an application if they were interested in joining Techfit.
All applicants were accepted if they completed the application. We
have 23 students in this club. Four middle school teachers (Pauline
Borders, Cindy Sprunger, Margie Dobler, and Rebecca Dailey)
attended a one week training session and a one day inservice to
prepare to teach the materials. Four schools in Indiana and four
schools in Charlotte are offering Techfit. This is the first year the
program has been offered to schools to be used in a research study.

Dots in Blue Water Collection Drive is Coming Soon!
During the first two weeks in December, the Dots in Blue Water team will be collecting items
for “Haitian Family Hygiene Kits” in the high school. These kits will include towels, bars of
soap, bars of laundry detergent, and other hygiene items. These items will be transported to
Haiti and distributed during the water purification/hygiene trainings in June.
During the week of December 1, the elementary and middle school students and staff can
help by donating toothbrushes and toothpaste. These items will be placed in the blue
barrel at the end of your child’s hallway. We are asking that the toothbrushes and toothpaste
be in their original packaging.
During the week of December 8, the students and staff may donate nail clippers, wide
tooth combs, and Band-Aids. These items will also be placed in the blue barrels and should
be donated in their original packaging. Each of these items can be purchased at one of the
local dollar stores for $1.
We appreciate any donations made for the people in Haiti. Together we are making a World
of Difference!

Notes from the School Nurse, Gina Dunnuck.
As the flu season approaches, we want to remind everyone of a few things to
help keep us healthy. The best way to prevent the spread of germs is to
encourage frequent hand washing, even when kids feel well. Kids should wash
their hands before eating, after coughing or sneezing, and after going to the
bathroom. Please encourage your child and family to cover their coughs with the
bend of their arm/elbow. We are always working closely with the Health Department to monitor any outbreaks
or conditions that need immediate attention to help prevent the spread of these
illnesses. It is very important to South Adams to help keep our students healthy
and our school clean!
