Our Lady of Peace Retreat Franciscan Missionary Sisters of Our Lady of Sorrows Spring 2016 Newsletter Dear Friends, For this beautiful Year of Mercy, I want to share with you some excerpts I came across recently from Dr. Robert Stackpole’s The Divine Mercy Message of St. Francis of Assisi. Dr. Stackpole is the Director of the John Paul II Institute of Divine Mercy, an apostolate of the Marian Fathers of the Immaculate Conception. He helps illustrate how important Divine Mercy was to St. Francis. In the High Middle Ages, the theme of the merciful love of God was certainly not the exclusive property of St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Catherine of Siena, and the Dominicans. The early Franciscans also contributed to the Church’s meditation on Divine Mercy in their own distinctive way. For example, we know from The Life of St. Francis, written by St. Bonaventure, that one of the divine perfections that St. Bonaventure saw most clearly reflected in St. Francis of Assisi was the Divine Mercy. Bonaventure writes the following lines in the “Prologue” to the biography: In these latter days the grace of God our Savior has appeared in his servant Francis to all who are truly humble and lovers of holy poverty. In him they can venerate God’s superabundant mercy, and be taught by his example to live in conformity with Christ, and to thirst after blessed hope with unflagging desire. Later in the same work, St. Bonaventure tells us that one of the principal intentions of St. Francis’s own prayers was pleading for mercy upon the world, on the basis of the sorrowful passion of Jesus Christ: When the man of God was left alone and at peace, he would fill the groves with sighs, sprinkle the ground with tears, striking his breast with his fist, and having found there a kind of secret hiding place, would converse with his Lord...There he would answer his Judge, there he would entreat his Father, there he would entertain his Friend; and there also on several occasions the friars who were devoutly observing him heard him groan aloud. The Little Flowers of St. Francis also contain several Divine Mercy stories. One taken from Chapter 26 describes how St. Francis converted three robbers by preaching to them about God’s mercy: “Let us go,” said one [of the robbers], “to St. Francis, and if he gives us hope that we may be able to turn from our sins to the mercy of God, let us do that which he commands us, if by so doing we may deliver our souls from the pains of hell.” This counsel was pleasing to the others, and so all three of them being agreed, they went in haste to St. Francis and spoke to him thus, “Father, by reason of the many horrible sins which we have committed, we do not believe that we can turn to the mercy of God. But if you have any hope that God will receive us with mercy, indeed we are ready to do what you shall bid us, and to do penance with you.” Then St. Francis received them lovingly and benignly, with many examples, assuring them of the mercy of God and promising them that of a certainty he would obtain it for them from God, showing them that the mercy of God is (continued on next page) infinite, and even if our sins were infinite the mercy of God is greater than our sins, according to the Gospel. St. Paul the Apostle said, “Christ the blessed came into the world to redeem sinners.” Through these words and similar teachings, the three robbers renounced the devil and his works. St. Francis received them into the Order, and they began to do great penance.” What a living example St. Francis was of the merciful love of God. May you experience the blessings in your lives of this Extraordinary Holy Year of Divine Mercy. Be assured of our prayers for you throughout the year. Sr. Angela prepared a variety of tea sandwiches and her mouth watering, eggpastry beef empanadas. Thanks to the generosity of the 140 attending the event, and the matching gifts raised from a lively paddle raise conducted by Sr. Anne Marie, our net profit this year was $50,251.26. This was a substantial increase from last year’s net proceeds. Our heartfelt thanks to those who attended, the Tea Committee for their planning, and to our volunteers who put in many hours the day of the event. We wanted to thank, in a special way, all those who helped with the Tea this year, so Fr. Chun offered Mass on the Solemnity of the Annunciation in their behalf. Next year, we will host our Tea on February 7, 2017. Please mark your calendars! This stack of registration books, Sr. Anne Marie explains, represent the many retreatants at Our Lady of Peace Retreat, since the retreat house opened its doors in 1952. Outdoor Stations of the Cross Vandalism T hese challenging times have not left the retreat house untouched. Late last fall, the Galilea Women’s Retreat group was praying the Rosary along the outdoor Stations of the Cross, when the retreatants happened upon overturned benches, the desecration of one of the stations and later the discovery that the beautiful life-size marble statue of St. Joseph had been toppled and was lying face down in the mud. Due to the impact of the fall, the head was separated from the body. What sadness and shock everyone felt that day. Sr. Anne Marie phoned the police and made a report, but to date, we do not know who was responsible. We were awaiting a run of sunny days for the earth to harden enough for our Maintenance Crew to extricate the statue, when as Providence would have it, Fr. Gregory Dick, O. Praem., was giving the Men’s Retreat over the weekend of April 14-16 here at the retreat house. Fr. Gregory is a Norbertine priest from St. Michael’s Abbey in Silverado, California, and is well-acquainted with outdoor “projects.” The photos say everything! Father organized a work party from among the men on retreat, and on that warm Saturday afternoon, they restored St. Joseph to his upright position – and rightful place – on the retreat house grounds. Now our Maintenance Crew will put up another arbor and plantings to adorn the area. [Donations for this, gratefully accepted]. Our heartfelt thanks to Fr. Gregory and the work party. We suspect that this was one retreat experience our men were not expecting when they arrived for the weekend and one they will never forget! 4 Retreat House Comings and Goings From France W e had the pleasure of having Fr. Jacques Philippe and Sr. Clare from the Community of the Beatitudes spend a few days here at the retreat house, while Fr. Jacques was giving a parish mission at our local parish, in Beaverton, St. Cecilia. Fr. Jacques, is the author of five best-selling books that were inspired by conferences he had given as a retreat master. The photo at right was taken after breakfast in the Sisters’ Dining room. Fr. Cary Reniva, Pastor of St. Cecilia, Fr. Jacques and Sister Clare are in the back row. The Sisters have extended an invitation to Fr. Jacques to give both the men’s and women’s silent retreats in Spring of 2018. We are awaiting his reply. From Belarus...with Love T wo Russian Orthodox Sisters of Mercy from Belarus, Maria and Anastasia, visited us for 10 days in early April. While here, they traveled to local Catholic parishes to display their religious articles and artwork. The money they raise supports, among other apostolates, their home for mentally challenged children and adults, and a home for men recently released from prison. Their Convent is named after the Holy Martyr Grand Duchess Elizabeth who perished during the Bolshevik Revolution. St. Elizabeth’s love and concern for the underprivileged was also the inspiration for the Sisters of Mercy, founded 17 years ago. Dolindo Ruotolo A bright cloud of spirituality rising from every home and every heart (translated from the Italian) (Letter to E.C., a spiritual child of Fr. Dolindo) I am writing to you in the light of the Holy Rosary, the prayer that brings us so close to Our Lord and which is today the object of a feast day on the Liturgical Calendar of the Church. One wonders how it is possible that a prayer can be the object of a feast day. The object of a feast is a Divine Mystery, Mary Most Holy or a Saint. With this prayer, however, Mary Most Holy comes to meet Christians in the same way that she meets them at Lourdes, Fatima, Tre-Fontane and any other place where she appeared. She comes with all the riches of the mysteries of the Life, Passion, Death and Resurrection of Our Lord. Do we not honor the wheat that is used for the Sacrament of the Eucharist? Amid the disharmony of our chaotic lives, the Rosary is the instrument, the harp or the psaltery with its ten chords for each group of harmonies. With the Rosary we continually raise a song of love from earth. In the excessive materialism of our life, it is a bright cloud of spirituality, rising from every home and every heart. Does not the harpist play music written by a master? Does he not go over it again and again, with his finger on the chords, making the sweet sounds, written from the heart and produced by the press of his fingers? Well then, so do we. We recite the Rosary going over the keys of love flowering from the life of Jesus and Mary in the mysteries of their lives. On the beads of the Rosary we sing those canticles of love that redeemed us. The Rosary is a granary of Graces. As an army has its march music, marking the time for the soldiers, so does the Rosary lovingly mark time for the Church Militant. It is like the clashing of the trumpets accompanying the siege of Jericho and it shook its walls to the foundation. Nor could the Turkish army resist the power of that sound of faith and were put to flight. Nor could the Communist army offer resistance in a situation that was even worse. Do we not honor the grapes used for the Sacrament of the Eucharist? The Rosary is the vineyard that produces the fruits of Jesus and Mary. It has been and still is the vineyard of God and the fullness of life for us. Mary Most Holy wanted the beads to be called Rosary, that is, a rosebush. Roses bloom in the mild weather, but they remain in bloom all year around. The same is true of the Rosary for Christian people. The Rosary is newly born every day. It is a rosebush that we offer to God every day, much as incense was offered to God, on an altar of gold, in ancient times. This is the prayer to which the Church dedicates a Solemn Feast, a summary of all the other Feasts and a perpetual Rosary in the The Rosary is not only an instrument for counting the annual liturgical cycle.
