Program
This week's program will be from the Mother Lode Chapter of the Flying Samaritans. Chris Nelso

rural areas of Baja California, Mexico. This volunteer organization operates a monthly clinic belo
border that is the primary provider of care for individuals and families that would otherwise have
other place to turn to.
In addition, the Club will have a brief opportunity to provide a rousing send-off to a team of cycli
having been hosted by Gary Gall, headed for a fundraising ride across America.
Last Week
The Country Club was dark last week as th
Rotarians traveled to the Food Bank of El D
County for a tour of the new facility and a
chance to meet with Mike Sproule, Execut
Director, who shared his thoughts about th
state of food availability in El Dorado Count

food resources and looking for volunteers to assist in their growing effort.
Mike shared that there are thousands of families and individuals in El Dorado County who cannot
afford to meet their basic nutritional needs. When you donate food, money, or time to the Food B
of El Dorado County, you ensure a single mother can feed her child, a local senior citizen is able
receive a bag full of groceries, or that a child can enjoy a nutritious meal.
No other single non-profit in our county can help so many: Your dollar simply goes farther here.
one-dollar donation stretches to six-dollars in food resources. How do we do it? First of all our lab
force is almost all volunteer based. Local volunteers are so vital to our mission, and the savings
payroll is primarily used to provide more food relieve. Efficiency is of high importance to us, we k
that every penny adds up, and every penny saved can help someone else in our community. In 2
alone our volunteers, financial supporters, product donors, and charity network made it possible
to distribute over $2.5 million of food to the hungry of El Dorado County.
The Food Bank of El Dorado County facilitates delivery of food product, both canned and fresh, to
seventeen food closets located on the Western Slope. In addition, through a Department of Agric
Grant, Mike was able to create a one-of-a-kind food-bag distribution trailer that travels on a daily
schedule throughout the county to locations where there are residents without food resources no
transportation. Locations include remote areas around Georgetown, South Shore, Pioneer and
Somerset.
The old storage facility was soon out grown. One of Mike's (and his Board) dreams was to locate
piece of property, and build a large scale food storage and distribution facility in a central locatio
within the County. The Department of Agriculture once again stepped in and with volunteer dolla
provides him the opportunity to build the new facility in Barnett Business Park. Here he is able to
more efficiently gather, sort, and distribute food stuffs arriving from Senior Gleaners, California F
Bank, and other wholesalers and retailers who have product to share.
Mike's belief is that it is possible through volunteerism to build and maintain a level of efficiency
the distribution of food services throughout the county. Once a year, the Food Bank provides a
massive distribution of fresh and canned food, toys, and resources for sanitary living to the thou
of families that are living just on the edge of life, as well as those who have fallen through the cr
The Food Bank serves over fifty projects in the county. There are opportunities to volunteer eithe
directly with the Food Bank or one of its many countywide outlet locations. Donations of food and
money are gratefully accepted at the Food Bank of El Dorado County, 4550 Business Drive, Came
Park, or by visiting their website or email: [email protected] or personal contact at (530) 621-9
