Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival reaches its 18th year in 2016. This
year, themes will be more diverse than ever, displaying both
sky lantern cultural tradition and innovation. This year the main
lantern will be covered with numerous small and large thumb
prints that convey best wishes, symbolizing the desire of all
people to see their wishes come true. As well as being moved
by the sight of sky lanterns flying away, visitors can also visit
Shifen Waterfall Park and view the waterfall called “Taiwan’s
Niagara Falls” and enjoy the mountain scenery along the
Pingxi Branch Line.
Numerous auspicious totems can be found all
around Lin Family Mansion and Garden, reflecting
the desire of the Lin family in earlier times that
their descendants would achieve high office and
noble rank; they raised peacocks that represented
the phoenix and monkeys, hoping that their
descendants would all “feng hou”, (a homonym of
the word meaning to achieve noble rank in Chinese.)Using the monkey and
peach images of the Lin Family Mansion and Garden, a series of Chinese New
Year activities have been planned to celebrate the Year of the Monkey. Traditional
arts performers and craftsperson will also demonstrate their skill. Everyone is
invited to start the year with a visit to Lin Family Mansion and Garden.
Since 2008, Yingge Museum of ceramics has held
an annual Chinese zodiac ceramic art exhibition.
This year 120 works from elementary and middle
schools around Taiwan will be on display at
Artists’ Village. The monkey-themed works are all
simple in terms of technique but full of childlike
charm and youthful vigor, and give viewers a
feeling of innocence. Everyone is welcome to view these
works at the start of the Year of the Monkey and take away
good luck all year.
To welcome the Year of the Monkey, Shihsanhang
Museum of Archeology will hold a series of festival
activities on February 9th-14th. Through various
monkey-themed activities, wishes for the New
Year will be conveyed. We hoped that the happy
atmosphere will affect all visitors and give them a
good start to a perfect year.

In Jinguashi, folk belief is interwoven into local residents’
daily lives. Through the exhibition, Gold Museum
invites you to explore the recent changes in these
beliefs amongst the people in Jinguashi. It includes the
buildings, celebrations, and any influence of Jinguashi
folk beliefs to the local mining industry. This exhibition
is hugely varied, including temples, verses and records
kept by cultural workers in the area. Through videos,
hand-drawn maps, old photos, paintings by local artists, this
exhibition shows the abundance and profundity of faith of the people in
Jinguashi.
Artist Lin Cong-ming is a native of Yilan.
A lover of the grand mountain and sea
scenery of his home county, after receiving
a college art education, he focused on
painting realistic paintings of the customs
and conditions of Yilan. After retirement,
he returned to live in his native Yilan,
hoping that setting roots in the native soil would propel him to
a higher artistic plane. On Hakka Day 2016, the Lin Cong-ming oil Painting
Solo Exhibition will be held, the aim being to reawaken people’s love of
nature and the land.
The hilly terrain and rainy climate of Pinglin
make it ideal for growing tea. The fragrance
of tea made using techniques passed down
through many generations fills the air. Much
anticipated, Pinglin Tea Museum will reopen
after refurbishment with the Pinglin Tea
Culture Special Exhibition. New Taipei Tea
Land exhibition area introduces the famous
tea growing areas of New Taipei City, the characteristics of the tea industry,
and diverse tea culture; the Search for Tea in Pinglin exhibition area focuses on
Pinglin’s tea industry, depicting the humanistic charm of the local people. Pinglin’s
most famous tea, Paochong tea, also features in the exhibition, allowing visitors to
appreciate the captivating charm of tea land Pinglin.
