Vocabulary Flashcards
Week 1
Directions: Use the format that we discussed in class to write the following words on index cards. You
must include: the word, definition, a sentence that shows how to apply the meaning of the word (NOT
USING THE WORD IN A SENTENCE), a picture/cartoon/formula, and synonyms and antonyms for each
word. (An example is on the back.) You will have a quiz over these vocabulary words on Tuesday.
1. Continent: a huge land mass (Know all 7 continents and their location on a map.)
2. Ocean: one of the five large areas of salt water that cover much of the Earth's surface. (Know all
5 oceans and their location on a map.)
3. Equator: circles the middle of the Earth like a belt and is located halfway between the North and
South poles. It is 0◦ latitude and divides the Earth into Northern and Southern Hemispheres.
4. Prime Meridian: also called the Meridian of Greenwich is 0◦ longitude and runs through
Greenwich, England. It divides the Earth into Eastern and Western Hemispheres.
5. Physical Map: a map that shows landforms and water features.
6. Political Map: a map that shows the names and political boundaries of countries, cities, and
transportation routes
