St. Barbara Parish, Brookfield Renew My Church Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, As a new year begins, I want to assure you of my prayers for you, your families, and your parish communi es. I also want to share some important informa on about Renew My Church. As you may already know, Renew My Church is an archdiocesan ini a ve that involves all the people of the archdiocese and their faith communi es. The goal of Renew My Church is to make our parishes more vital and more sustainable. We do this not on our own ini a ve but in response to the call of Christ, which was first heard by the disciples. The call is the same as it was in those early days of the Church: to be His disciples and take responsibility for carrying on His mission in our me. The place to start is by working together to make our parishes vibrant communi es that form missionary disciples of Jesus. This will also mean being realis c about our limited human and material resources and evalua ng how our present structures may need to be organized differently to keep pace with changing reali es. A very important part of the process of Renew My Church are the parish groupings that will work to plan for the future and discern where God is leading us. A er receiving consulta on and feedback from you, the priests of the diocese, and parish pastoral councils, we are announcing the groupings today. Your parish will Page Two be part of a grouping that will enable you to assess, plan, and discern how best to meet the needs of the future in a way that is both reasonable and in conformity with God’s will for us. Each grouping will have guidance for its process of reflec on and discernment. Everything, however, begins with building rela onships across parishes in a given grouping. That means ge ng to know each other and perhaps sharing some common projects or events, such as retreats, lectures, or community service for those in need. With future guidance and facilita on, this will develop in more specific planning and discernment direc ons. Renew My Church will undoubtedly involve leaving behind familiar pa erns and demand that we move outside our comfort zones. In a word, it will require sacrifice, but that has always been true for the Church whenever we have taken up new challenges. I am convinced that we are up to the task, and willing to do whatever it takes to build our capacity to pass on our faith to future genera ons. That is what is at stake in the Renew My Church process. I encourage you to become involved and pray for its success. Sincerely yours in Christ, Cardinal Blase J. Cupich Archbishop of Chicago Our grouping is St. Barbara, St. Louise de Marillac, Divine Infant, and Divine Providence. A Prayer For “Renew My Church” Lord Jesus, you speak to us today, as you spoke to holy men and women who have gone before us. In every age and in our own me, you call to us and say: Renew My Church. Pour out the gi of your Holy Spirit upon us, and so enable us to hear you clearly to listen to each other a en vely to imagine our future boldly to discern your direc on wisely to persevere in your holy will courageously to stay together in charity to surrender our own plans readily to embrace the greater good to hand on your gi s to future genera ons. May we remain in the holy company of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the apostles, and all the saints. May their example and presence inspire us with pa ent confidence in the work of your grace. We ask this of you who live and reign with the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen. Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time January 29, 2017 From the Desk of Fr. Edgar The gospel for this Sunday is about the Bea tudes. Many people, at reading this passage, become perplexed. They end up with more ques ons than answers. The key for unlocking the meaning of the Sermon on the Mount is simply this: it is the man of the bea tudes. Through this sermon, Jesus reveals his mind to us. So, to follow Him is to become a person of the bea tudes—is "to put on the mind of Christ". This means that, in order to truly understand the Bea tudes, we need to know Jesus—we need to immerse ourselves in his life and person. How do we do that? One technique that really helps to know the Lord, is the prayer technique called Lec o Divina. It consists of five steps: 1. Lec o (reading) 2. Medita o (medita on) 3. Ora o (prayer) 4. Contempla o (contempla on) and 5. Ac o (ac on). Let’s look briefly at each step: Lec o - We take a passage from the gospel and just try to understand what it says literally—in itself. This phase is summarized with the ques on: What does the text say that everyone should understand? Medita o - In the medita on phase, we ask, what does this text say to me, today? Medita on is also an opportunity to see ourselves in the story—in the characters found in the passage. Ora o - At this phase we engage God in prayer or conversa on that comes in various forms: we ask pe ons of him, we give him thanks, and we give him praise. At this phase we can ask ourselves: What can I say to the Lord in response to his word? Contempla o - At this phase we simply rest in the Word of God. We listen at the deepest level of our being to God who speaks within us with a s ll small voice. As we listen, we are gradually transformed from within. This step comes with the willingness to change, and the decision to follow God’s will rather than our own. Ac o - Finally, having learned more about Jesus, and received God’s love and grace, we go forth to serve others out of the love we have been given. Our transforma on calls us to witness to others; it calls us to selflessly serve our brothers and sisters in Christ. These acts are done not so much out of a sense of duty, but out of the inspira on we receive from the acceptance in faith of God’s love. Let us prac ce this technique and we will not only come closer to God in faith but also know evermore the Jesus in the bea tudes.
