GETTING ACTIVE
Shout it Out
Moderate
Divide students into 4 teams in order to play two games simultaneously.
Safety Considerations
Before starting, inspect the activity area to eliminate any potential hazards.
Provide a clear playing area for each game. Designate boundaries with pylons.
Overview
●
●
Students will actively and safely explore a territory themed, small group game.
●
WARM UP
Partner Moves
●
●
●
Students jog on the spot beside a partner until they hear a command. At each
new command, they perform the accompanying action, and then return to
jogging on the spot.
Commands:
❍
❍
❍
Elbows = Partners link elbows and skip to touch all four walls.
Body Builders = Partners face each other, while pretending they are muscular weight lifters
posing in a contest. They take turns, with one person striking a pose while their partner
mirrors the pose.
Action Sports = One partner mimics the actions of a particular sport while the other copies it,
and then they switch roles.

Give a ball and pinnies/markers of 1 colour to 2 teams, and a ball and
pinnies/markers of a 2nd colour to the other 2 teams. Designate a person to
be the goalie for each end.
Divide the playing area lengthwise into 2 areas. Use pylons to designate the
dividing line and the end (goal) lines.
Choose a short game or way to determine which side goes first
(rock-paper-scissors).
The object of the game is to pass the ball between members of the offensive
team and successfully throw the ball to the opposing goalie. Once that
happens, the scoring team should call out an agreed-upon word, such as a
fun/made-up word, or something in their native language.
Each student picks a spot in the play area and stands frozen in that space.
Ensure they are not too close together. When on offense, students will be
frozen, when on defense students are free to move throughout the space.
A student who has the ball cannot run or take any steps. They have 5 seconds
to pass the ball to another team member. Students may pivot to move away
from a defender.
The defensive team tries to intercept the ball while it is passed between
members of the offensive team. No one on the offensive team can move their
feet. If the ball is intercepted or hits the ground, the defensive team
becomes the offensive team.
Ensure that students pass the ball among their teammates at least three
times (i.e., they should not throw immediately to the goalie).
The team that is scored upon gets the ball, and immediately begins to pass
the ball from their goal line toward the opposing goal line.

COOL DOWN
Coolin’ Machine
●
●
●
●
●
Students form groups of 3–4 and will use their bodies to create a cool-down
machine. Everyone in the group is connected in some way.
Each group decides whether it will move in unison, or whether members will
react to one another.
Students demonstrate their machines to other groups. Consult the examples
in Appendix B.
Finish by asking students to inhale deeply and slowly, while they stretch up as
tall as possible.
While students slowly exhale, they bend forward at the waist, letting their
arms relax and sway.
Other Considerations
●
●
●
For the warm-up, ensure that students understand the importance of moving
their joints through a full range of motions.
Heighten the fun by encouraging students to choose a funny or interesting
word as the “goal” word. It could be the word for “goal” or “ball” in their
First Nation’s language, or another word upon which they all agree.
For the cool-down consider playing slow music.
