Weekly newsletter for residents of Ingleside at King Farm, Rockville, MD Sept. 23, 2016 Lecture by Stephen McKenna: “Violence: the Exception or the Rule?” Lecture by Frederick Sadler: “Food Safety” B Y R ICHARD T HAYER , C HAPLAIN B Y L IZ K ILFOY , FOR THE L ECTURE C OMMITTEE Mon., Sept. 26 at 2:00 in MPR. Wed., Sept. 28 at 2:00 in MPR. Reports of violence fill the daily news, in print, on the radio and on the screen. Local, regional, national and global stories all share a common theme of violence — it is always news, everywhere. How do we account for this aspect of ourselves? How might we address this seemingly intractable behavior? Dr. Stephen McKenna will explore these questions and more in his lecture, “Violence: the Exception or the Rule?” Fred Sadler served the US Food & Drug Administration for more than 40 years, retiring as the Director of FDA’s Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) office. His responsibilities included making agency determinations on denials of information, appeals, and litigation support for FDA, the Dept. of Health and Human Services and the Dept. of Justice. McKenna is Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Media and Communication Studies at The Catholic University of America, where he is also a fellow at the Institute for Policy Research and Catholic Studies. His research interests include: the history and theory of rhetoric; 18th-century Anglo-ScotsAmerican rhetoric and ethics; the rhetoric of propaganda and advertising, and the mimetic theory of René Girard. Among his publications are Adam Smith: The Rhetoric of Propriety (SUNY, 2005), and World's Greatest Speeches, 4th ed. (Dover, 1999). Published articles cover a range of topics such as Adam Smith, the rhetoric of advertising, and the U.S. presidential rhetoric. He is currently at work on a book about Abraham Lincoln's rhetoric. Please join Dr. McKenna in the MPR on Monday, September 26 at 2pm. All are welcome. In addition to routinely providing instruction and direction on the programs within FDA and HHS, Fred was regularly invited to speak at numerous non-government organizations and more than a dozen federal government agencies; served as an instructor for the Dept. of Justice more than 30 times; and testified before the U.S. House of Representatives on pending legislative reform to the FOIA. He received the HHS Secretary's Award for Distinguished Service and the FDA Commissioner’s Award (three times), and has received more than 30 additional awards from within, and external to, the federal government. 1 Comcast/Verizon Survey Results Posted “Peace Is Possible When…” B Y H ELEN S MITS , FOR THE IT C OMMITTEE September 21 is the International Day of Peace. October 2 is the Inaugural IKF Stepanek Peace Lecture. Between these two occasions, one global and the other local, residents are invited to consider what makes peace possible. You will find our lobby set up to display residents’ expressions of peace. You will also find a station in the lobby where you may add your reflections on peace. When is peace possible? What makes peace possible? What is your part in making it so? Add your voice, add your spirit. You make peace possible. B Y R ICHARD T HAYER , C HAPLAIN Thanks so much to everyone for your response to the Comcast/Verizon survey. We learned a lot about how you use the internet and what you want from the “bulk” provider of services. If you would like to see the results, they are posted on the resident website, www.inglesideliving.org Click on GO after entering your Username and Password. (Contact Bill Samuel at 240-477-8827 if you don’t know your Username and Password.) Just go to “committees” and then to “IT committee”; the tabulation is the first item within the committee and it is named, as you’d expect, “Comcast-Verizon Survey Report.” A Call for Peace Pieces B Y K ATE K AVITSKI , L IFE E NRICHMENT M ANAGER , P ENTHOUSE Thank you to everyone who submitted a peace piece to be displayed in the week leading up to our annual Mattie JT Stepanek Memorial Lecture on Peace with Professor Barbara Wien. In this seminar you will learn about why falls occur, how to prevent them, and proper technique to get up off the ground with and without a chair. This seminar will have a practice component for those interested and capable of running through the different techniques I will be teaching. BY J UDY D OCTOR On September 18, I had the privilege of being present at a luncheon when my friend and our fellow resident Claire Nissenbaum was honored with an award for “Lifetime Achievement in the Dyslexia Community” for her leadership and pioneer work on dyslexia. The award was presented by the Atlantic Seaboard Dyslexia Education Center (ASDEC) which, referring to Claire’s diminutive height, said she is known as the “Little Giant of Dyslexia Education.” In her early roles as an educator and education reporter, Claire recognized the need for a comprehensive approach to helping children with dyslexia, who were achieving below their potential in reading and math. After many years with the Center School as President and CEO of Tri-Services National Institute for Dyslexia, in 2000 Claire founded and became Executive Director of ASDEC, where she developed a unique program to train Academic Therapists. The program developed new techniques based for teaching academic language skills and also incorporated the best techniques from several other U.S. programs. Today ASDEC faculty members teach throughout the U.S. as well as Canada, and trainees come from Hong Kong, and Brazil, and have impacted thousands of lives. Health and Wellness Committee I would like to introduce to everyone the first IKF Health and Wellness Committee. We will be working hard to continue to expand our programs to be fully inclusive, diverse, efficient, successful and fun. Health and Wellness Committee Members: Sam Girson, Bud Gordon, Janie Hillis, Barbara Kirkpatrick, Renee Shaw, Carolyn Shettle, Ev Sutton, Florence Whitman We will place an initial survey Monday September 26 on your ledges. We would appreciate it if you would return the completed survey to the box near the concierge desk by midnight Friday September 30. Walk Club Picnic Claire regards dyslexia not as a disability, but a difference. It is a brain-based functional variation that requires a unique program and therapists with unique skills. She believes that “For every dyslexic individual, if just one person has faith in that individual, that individual will succeed.” Pack up a lunch and come walk with us! Weather permitting, Thursday Sept. 29 the IKF Walk Club will have its first Walk & Picnic at Mattie JT Stepanek Park! We will meet in the Atrium at 11:45! Please come and join us if you are available! In health, Cody Claire Nissenbaum served as Executive Director of ASDEC until she retired in 2008. 3 4 Still space available for the annual book fair!
