MEMBER OF
COMMITTED TO GREEN OPERATIONS
Frequentis is taking part in key programmes dedicated to greener skies around the world. Both
SESAR and NextGen have stated clear environmental goals for reducing environmental impact
without compromising safety and capacity. These programmes address operational efficiency in
terms of throughput and reduction of congestions/delays, but will also improve environmental
efficiency during all phases of a flight.
The smartStrips Design fully supports the SESAR objectives and is in line with the ATM
Masterplan.
Frequentis stands for quality, innovation and a total commitment to ATM.
New technologies, emerging from the Single European Sky initiative, that both follow and integrate with the state-of-the-art architecture of the overall system will enable the operational
improvements required to meet the 2020 targets.
Frequentis supports the service-oriented system of systems approach described in the
European ATM Master Plan and therefore favours an open SES ATM interface framework.

ADDED VALUE
smartStrips flight data management is a core technology
specifically designed to provide tangible improvements in
the controller‘s workflow and decision support activities.
smartStrips FDM gives controllers the tools and information
they need to work towards safety (separation), economic
(efficient use of airspace, cost savings), and environmental
(avoiding unnecessary emissions) objectives.
place for certain flight level. Having the flight data available
electronically is an important prerequisite for future services such as DCL (departure clearance via datalink), CPDLC or
4D trajectories.
ENABLER FOR INCREASED SAFETY
In combination with a ground surveillance system (A-SMGCS),
the information about the actual clearance status enables
additional safety net services. E.g. a flight that enters the
runway without take-off, line-up or crossing clearance will
raise an alarm. Without electronic flight data, such services
won't be possible.
IMPROVING EFFICIENCY IN OPERATIONS
Electronic flight data solutions & automation solutions can
automate a lot of tasks at a tower operation: printing and
distribution of flight strips, replacing phone calls between
positions with silent coordination, automatic creation of
statistics. All these tasks cause additional often carried out
by specific roles such as assistants. Electronic flight data
solutions can automate these tasks to almost 100%,
respectively may enable that the remaining tasks can be
carried out by the core controllers.
REPLACEMENT OF OUTDATED TECHNOLOGY
Flight strip printers and also the tower equipment requires
regular technology refreshments. While equipping a new
tower with the latest technology, the change to electronic
flight data is obvious to be included. A highly-redundant, failsafe architecture ensures system availability at all times.
Various built-in mechanisms and backup concepts make the
system failsafe under the toughest conditions. By providing
software assurance levels according to
ED-109/DO-278B we are able to supply the
evidence needed to fulfil ESARR 6
S
requirements.

IMPROVING SITUATIONAL AWARENESS
The instant availability of the whole situation improves safety and efficiency at the tower: approach controllers could
immediately see the upcoming traffic including all provided
clearances and coordinations, the same in the other direction. Also within the operations the information of a flight
may be exchange faster.
PROVIDE HUMAN FACTORS COMFORT
Sophisticated animations and handwriting capabilities,
single-click operation and advanced graphics design provide
clarity and comfort in the human-machine interface. This
secures high user acceptance and will ultimately reduce
human error.

DATALINK EVOLUTION
Many ANSPs are already implementing a datalink strategy.
The combination of traditional voice communications with
datalink not only provides means for more efficient communication between ATC and the aircrew, but also enables the
integration of new services.
Frequentis, as the leading voice communications systems
provider, is perfectly suited to be your partner for implementing a datalink strategy. Frequentis provides the key
capability of mission-critical control rooms including the
required network and communications technology. We provide you with the required experience about the network
infrastructure, including the proper dimensioning and network tuning, and also the seamless integration of voice and
datalink services.
INTEGRATION OF AUTOMATED ATIS SERVICES TO
THE VOICE COMMUNICATION SYSTEM
Frequentis smartATIS is a fully automated ATIS system that
uses advanced and field-proven synthetic speech for the
automatic generation of ATIS broadcasts. smartATIS uses
the leading technology of the Frequentis 3020X voice communication system to send the broadcast out over radio
transmitters.
DATALINK SERVICES FOR D-ATIS
By connecting smartATIS with a datalink communication
channel, the ATIS message will be sent directly to the FMS
system onboard the aircraft. The aircrew will directly receive
the ATIS message similar to an SMS, thus the risk of misunderstandings or wrong transmissions is eliminated.
ADD DEPARTURE CLEARANCE SERVICES (DCL) AND
PREPARE FOR CPDLC
Using the same datalink connection, the system can be
evolved to deliver departure clearance messages directly to
the aircrew. The solution, called smartDCL, uses flight data
similar to smartStrips but is only required at one controller
working position in the tower. This is a cost efficient step
towards a fully electronic flight data system
REPLACE PAPER-BASED FLIGHT STRIP OPERATION
WITH SMARTSTRIPS FLIGHT DATA MANAGEMENT
In this step, all other controller working positions are also
replaced with the smartStrips Flight Data Manager. The DATIS and DCL services are fully integrated and can automatically be shown at all controller working positions. Thereby,
the control room can reap the full set of benefits and added
value that smartStrips can deliver, such as increasing the
efficiency of operations or enhancing safety.

KEY FEATURES
> FLEXIBLE LAYOUTS
Our full flexibility for layouts, strips, and the whole workflow support provide great benefits for you as an ANSP
> AUTOMATION & WORKFLOW FEATURES
smartStrips® offers already a lot of features that previously where only available in big flight data processing (FDP)
systems. Other features, like a simple silent coordination Tower/Approach are even not available in those systems.
> DATALINK
Datalink is one of the key trends right now in ATC. It's already used intensively for communicating with the airline; but
now we also see datalink ATC services growing. We are SITA certified and therefore can connect to any datalink provider
(SITA or ARINC). smartStrips® uses the service "Digital Departure Clearance", that ultimately will help the ANSP to
change the Clearance Delivery process. In smartTools, the D-ATIS datalink service is used to transport ATIS messages
via datalink to the air crew.
> PLATFORM & ARCHITECTURE
smartStrips uses the TAPtools platform, which is a highly resilient, failsafe platform for ATC-grade IT solutions. The
platform supports an extensive range of message sets and interface protocols, including common standards such as
ICAO 4444, AFTN, AMHS, ED-133, EUROCONTROL, ADEX-P and FAA NAS. It integrates a multitude of flight data
processing (FDP) systems, automatic solutions, and other information sources to create a unified picture of the flight
situation. Each flight is represented as a flight object in the platform, which allows information management in a SWIMlike environment.
