YOUR ITINERARY
Day 1: Board Your Overnight Flight to Berlin!
Day 2: Berlin | Wittenberg
Arrive in Berlin and Transfer to Wittenberg
Arrive in Wittenberg, where Martin Luther lived and preached. The
Protestant Reformation began here on October 31, 1517, when he
nailed his 95 Theses to the door of the Castle Church.
Dinner is included this evening.
Overnight in the Wittenberg Region
Day 3: Wittenberg
Guided Sightseeing of Wittenberg
Travel to Wittenberg, where a local guide will take you around this
beautiful city. Although the city only has a population of 50,000, it has
played a major role in the history of Christianity. Learn about the ties
that Wittenberg has with Martin Luther and the Protestant
Reformation as you walk through the city.
Visit the Schlosskirche
Built originally in the fifteenth century and rebuilt in the nineteenth, this
church houses the graves of both Luther and Melanchthon. It was
here that one of history's most defining moments occurred when
Luther nailed his “Ninety Five Theses” to the door in 1517. Today, the
nineteenth century bronze doors bear the Latin text of Luther's
theses.
Visit the Luther House
Trace the 95 Theses' journey back to the door they were written
behind on a visit to Luther's home. Located in the monastery where
he studied and eventually lived out his adult life, the home doubles as
a museum. Inside you'll get to see the world's most impressive
collection of German Reformation artifacts, including Luther's robe, a
preserved lecture hall and dozens of first edition books.
Visit the Melanchthon House
Enter the Renaissance mansion of Philipp Melanchthon, the
Reformation's greatest scholar and Luther's greatest collaborator.
Timeless façades guard an interior that are the academic counterpart
to Luther's monastic quarters-complete with one-of-a-kind
manuscripts and artifacts.
Visit the Burg und Schloss Allstedt
This is a preserved castle and palace holds a history spanning from
the 13th to 19th century.
Arrive in Leipzig
Continue to Leipzig, a city with a rich musical and political history.
Today Leipzig is a major German transportation and intellectual hub,
boasting Europe's largest train station, and a vibrant student
atmosphere.
Dinner is included this evening.
Overnight in the Leipzig Region
Day 5: Erfurt | Eisenach
Transfer to Eisenach via Buchenwald Concentration Camp
Stop at the prisoner-built Buchenwald concentration camp. During
the summer of 1937, the SS forced the prisoners to carry huge
stones from the quarry to the camp. In later years of the camp's
operation, a powerful underground organization was created in the
camp and numerous prisoners who were sentenced to death by the
SS were hidden. This was made possible by overcrowding.
Arrive in Eisenach
Travel to Eisenach, a small town in the Thuringia province of
Germany. Eisenach's importance to Germany history lies mainly with
the Wartburg Castle and its connections with Martin Luther.
Visit the Lutherhaus (time permitting)
Visit the Lutherhaus, Martin Luther's boyhood home where he stayed
with the Cotta family from 1498 to 1501.
Visit Schloss Wartburg
Get ready for a hike up to Wartburg Castle! This medieval fortress was
built in 1067 and is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is most
famous for housing Martin Luther after his excommunication, while he
translated the New Testament into German.
Dinner is included this evening.
Overnight in the Eisenach Region
Day 6: Worms | Marburg | Heidelberg
Visit the Luther Garden
Since 2008, the Lutheran World Foundation in Geneva has been
planting 500 trees from all over the world as a living tribute to the
Reformation's quincentennial anniversary. This massive public garden
is a remarkable culmination of theology, history and community that is
expected to grow well beyond Wittenberg city limits.
Transfer to Heidelberg via Marburg and Worms
Overnight in the Wittenberg Region
See the Reformation Monument in Worms
Welcome to Worms, arguably the oldest city in Germany and site of
the historic Edict of Worms in 1521. Travel under medieval bridges
and through timeless villages to find the largest Luther Monument in
the world. Walkthrough a hall of Reformation heroes as you're greeted
by the patina-green statues of everyone from Philip of Hesse to John
Wycliffe.
Day 4: Eisleben | Leipzig
Transfer to Leipzig via a Guided Sightseeing of Eisleben
Head to nearby Eisleben, Luther's birthplace. He was baptized here in
1483 and died here in 1546. Explore the town with your local guide,
taking time to visit the houses of both Luther's birth and death.
Eisleben is also a relatively industrial city, as it has been one of
Germany's copper-mining centers since the 14th century.
Guided Sightseeing of Marburg
Enjoy a guided sightseeing of Marburg, visiting the Marburg Castle,
exploring the Old City, and St. Elizabeth's Church, where the grave of
Paul von Hindenburg is located.
Arrive in Heidelberg
Arrive in Heidelberg, one of Germany's most beautiful towns, standing
proudly on the River Neckar. While its castle dominates the skyline,
the town also has wonderful shopping and a vibrant nightlife due to its
large university population.
Free Afternoon in Zurich
Take some time to explore this visually stunning city on your own. You
may choose to visit a museum or two, do some shopping or just
walking around the city with your camera to capture Zurich's stunning
backdrop!
Dinner is included this evening.
Overnight in Zurich
Overnight in Heidelberg
Day 10: Geneva
Day 7: Heidelberg
Transfer to Geneva
Seat of the Protestant Reformation, it was here that Calvin preached,
Voltaire philosophized, Victor Hugo wrote, and Rousseau came up
with ideas that helped ignite the French Revolution. The city is also
home to the United Nations building as well as countless parks and
islands of great natural beauty.
Reformation Tour of Heidelberg
Your tour begins with a visit to the most famous church in Germany.
Daylight pours through the windows of The Church of the Holy Spirit,
and its tall Gothic steeple stands high above the village houses. Head
for Old Town (“Altstadt”) and into historic Heidelberg University-which
was established by the Holy Roman Empire but became a home for
leading Reformers after Luther's disputation in 1518.
Visit Heidelberg Castle and Wine Barrel
See Heidelberg's 700-year-old Schloß (palace) and its famous Faß
(wine barrel), the world's largest. From the castle's rose-colored walls
and historic battlements, enjoy a stunning view of the Neckar Valley,
where Homo heidelbergensis roamed 500,000 years ago.
Neckar Valley Cruise
Enjoy a cruise along the Neckar River, where you'll see many Old
World castles perched along the riverbank. The excursion includes a
visit to 13th-century Dilsberg Fortress. Overlooking the Valley,
Dilsberg was once the most powerful fortress in the region.
Overnight in Heidelberg
Day 8: Schleitheim | Zurich
Transfer to Zurich via Schleitheim
Enjoy a visit to the Schleitheim Museum (pending confirmation),
before continuing on to visit the Anabaptist Cave.
Walking Tour of Geneva
Geneva is the center of international diplomacy, as well as a small,
friendly town. Set on the banks of Lake Geneva (also known as Lac
Léman) between the Alps and the Jura mountains in the Southwest
corner of Switzerland, Geneva was the site of the founding of both the
League of Nations and the Red Cross. Follow your Tour
Director past the Palais des Nations and the European headquarters
of the United Nations (Switzerland is not a member of the U.N. itself,
nor does it belong to NATO). Later, stroll along the beautiful
lakefront-during the summer months behold the Jet d'Eau, the
world's tallest fountain.
Visit St. Peter's Cathedral
With its mismatched towers, conflicting Romanesque and
Neoclassical styles and single bright green spire, this cathedral
appears to have multiple personalities. The interesting aesthetic
continues inside, where remnants of this once-Catholic church can be
seen in stained glass windows-but lies hidden behind whitewashed
walls that the Calvinists have covered up. You'll also get to see John
Calvin's chair resting near the entrance to the north tower spiraling
staircase.
Dinner is included this evening.
Visit Anabaptist Cave
Located on the outskirts of Schleitheim, is an Anabaptist cave with
the Anabaptists used to worship. Your Group Leader will lead your
group on a walking path into the cave to explore.
Arrive in Zurich
Discover the charms of beautiful Zurich. Stroll along the River Limmat
and take time to discover the narrow streets and the restored
buildings of the historic old town. Be sure to sample Switzerland's
world-famous cheese and chocolates.
