Newsletter – January 2016
Happy New Year!!!
Northern Nights 2015, was filled with many great memories. We saw some new faces this season along with the familiar folks that
return each year to Northern Nights. We experienced wonderful weather all season and were fortunate not to get bothered by the fires
as did many down South. We were amongst NHL, Rodeo and Fishing royalty and many who travelled all the way from Down Under
Australia to experience the majestic Northern Canada. The fishing seemed to stay consistently good all season. There has been a
noticeable increase in the size of the Walleye over the past couple years with plenty more in the 5lb – 6lb range. Another “big” surprise
this year, was the first Lake Trout to be caught on Waskwei Lake - Tom and Kevin continue to demonstrate their fishing prowess and
pulled out a 5lb Laker!
Mike and I would like to wish all our clients, friends and family a very prosperous and Happy New Year. We look forward to another
season of fishing adventures to look forward to.
Mike and I had the assistance of a very adventurous young Australian opening camp this past season. Peter took time out from his
North American journey to lend us a hand. We were grateful for his assistance and thrilled to see him enjoy and experience the fishing
and beauty the North has to offer.

Our veterans, or should I say, honorary veterans, Tom and Kevin returned for another tally of nice size fish and more recipes to exchange
- compliments to the chefs! Tom with our first lake Trout at Northern Nights – congratulations!

Two fathers and four boys between them, ventured to Northern Nights all the way from Montana for some thrills and spills. The boys
experienced fishing like they had never experienced before. In one day, the boys caught at least 10 pike over 30”, “plus a double
header” - a 36” pike with a bonus walleye in its mouth! Justus had an unforgettable 2 hour session with 3 pike over 40” and a couple
more in the 30”s. It was a father and son trip not to be forgotten!

Rob, the “Walleye Whisperer”, returned for another season bringing with him his daughter, son and father for a memorable family
experience. Rob’s father Bill, Premiers Walleye Cup Champion, was able to put them on to a secret walleye spot. But most of the time
Kaden and Somer had a blast just catching walleye and pike off the dock in between swimming.

Youngest fisherman (person) to reach Northern Nights Outfitters shore goes to Charlotte Scott, a whopping 20 months old. She had a
great time discovering the lake with her Mom and Dad, Grandma and Aunts and Uncle - experiencing the excitement of everyone
catching a fish and being captain of her own boat!

Guest Book
Mike and I could go on about each group and every memorable moment, but instead we will leave you with some of our clients 2015
quotes from Northern Nights guest book.
“Thank you both for what has been a truly memorable week here on the lake. The fishing was excellent catching my biggest fresh
water fish (with Cindy’s assistance). It was great to have the opportunity to help move in and set up camp for the summer
season and no better hosts I’d rather work with. Best of luck for your 2015 summer here at Northern Nights. The fishing was
excellent, catching my biggest freshwater fish. What an awesome experience!” Peter - Australia
“We had a great time, lots of fish and some big ones too! Mike and Cindy are the best! The fish fry was outstanding! Great
Adventure and something the boys will remember forever!” Brian, Tyge, Gator, Gunner Jesse & Justus – Montana.
“You guys are the best hosts! The accommodations were fantastic and the fishing even better than I (we) expected. This was
the best fishing trip yet. Thanks for all the laughs and tips on how to fillet a fish! Great memories and we look forward to coming
back next year.” Tanner - Calgary Alberta.
“Once again the most amazing trip with the most amazing people. I love this place, can’t wait to come back and see you
guys again.” Rob - Regina, Saskatchewan.
“Scott’s trip was made when he caught his first walleye. The 42” pike made the last day. John’s catch of a 36” in the same
spot made him happy. Megan and I had a great walleye day. Nothing better than a relaxing 5 days spent fishing, reading, shore
lunches and good visiting. Love the delicious fish fry Mike and Cindy do. Mike’s secret recipe. A great night of visiting. As
always we are sad to head back South.
We will miss the peace and quiet. Glad we all used the kayaks! What fun! If this 55 year
old lady can get in anyone can. Adventures galore! Can’t wait to come back with the grandchildren next year.” John, Ruth, Scott
and Megan - Gull Lake, Saskatchewan
“Unreal trip! Caught a bunch of fish and ate way too much! Trevor caught a 43 ½ inch pike. New lake record. Thanks a
bunch Mike and Cindy we will be back again. Cindy keep on fly fishing its tons of fun – go for some trout down under!”
Graham - Saskatoon Saskatchewan
“Once again, a great adventure, even more so bringing my kids and father along. Great hosts keep us coming back. Highlights was
the awesome shore lunch. Finding our own fishing reef by accident, caught most of our fish there. Definitely recommending to
people looking for a vacation spot. My kids had an awesome time and it was great to share this with them.” Rob - Melfort,
Saskatchewan
“First trip of many to Waskwei Lake, thank you for the great food, fishing, laughter, stories, lodging, friendship and of
Farkle! I had no idea what to expect coming to my first fly in trip and I must say I think I got spoiled! Nothing will ever
compare to your positive attitude and welcoming atmosphere. Can’t wait to tell my friends and family about your camp!”
Lindsey -Carrot River, Saskatchewan.
“Amazing first time trip for myself and a repeat for the others. Hospitality was second to none. Wonderful facilities, great hosts
and amazing stories shared in the evenings. The extras make things a little special-pie from fresh saskatoons brought in, fresh
focaccia herb bread, cookies on arrival, boats ready to roll at any time and boneless fish fillets. We shall return.” John - Kipling
Saskatchewan
“What a fantastic experience for us 4 Aussies. Fantastic fishing in the true Canadian Wilderness combined with great
hospitality and great food from our fabulous hosts Mike and Cindy. Lots of walleye and a 37” pike! The waterfalls and the
beaver dam were real highlights. We even got close to the Loons. Hope we can reciprocate the hospitality in Australia”
Peter, Will, Ewen and Angus - Australia
“We had such a wonderful time catching up with you and catching plenty of fish. Charlotte loved the boat and everything about
the freedom of your island. This will be the start to many family visits to Northern Nights. Thank you so much for everything.
We had a blast!” Jessie, Jude and Charlotte – Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan
“Our first fly in fishing trip. Was a fun experience and had a great time. You guys are great people and made our stay
very enjoyable. Thank you very much for the very tasty fish fry and the good cookies. Thank you for having us and the
great hospitality. Loved the hot shower. Thanks for everything!!
Hope to see you guys next year.” Milton and Karen –
Carrot River, Saskatchewan
“Well I finally won a game of Farkle! LOL Trip #7. What can I say everything is just as exciting and enjoyable as the first trip.
The fishing was on, we scored ourselves a pile of walleye. We went jumping beaver damns once again, we had a great time. It’s
not the fishing or the fish fry that make this such a special trip, it’s the company and the adventures we have together. Mike
showed me how to cast a fly rod, which I have been wanting to learn for some time so thanks for that Mike. Heading up to the
water falls tomorrow then home. Thanks for everything once again. You guys sure know how to make a good time. See you
again.” Brody – Carrot River, Saskatchewan
“Northern lights, good scenery and great fishing! Couldn’t have imagine a more perfect spot!! Cheers Mike and Cindy for
looking after us boys!” Jimmy, Michael and Nick (and Riley your son!!)
