Friday 25 March – Military History Walk ‘Roman Defences’: A visit to the ‘Nunnery’ looking at
Roman, Napoleonic, Victorian, and German additions to the most ancient building in the Channel
Islands. The walk will continue through to Longis Lines which was first fortified during the Napoleonic
War period and again by the Victorians and later by the Germans. Meet at the Nunnery 2.00pm

remains of Lager Norderney and ending up at Fort Château à L’Étoc at Arch Bay. Meet at Fort Albert

Monday 2 May – Lecture ‘Development of Alderney’s Victoria Harbour’. Alderney’s main harbour
for hundreds of years was at Longis Bay – certainly since Roman times. In the mid-1700s Douglas
Quay was constructed and used for privateering as well as general cargo. After much debate and
changes of plan during the 1840s, the British Government began the construction of a large harbour
at Braye rather than at Longis which was the original proposal. This decision was followed by the
construction of the Inner Harbour and the Breakwater, for use by the British navy, and the
subsequent fortification of the island. By the end of the century, the commercial harbour was still at
Douglas Quay which had become inadequate especially as silting up had occurred, and in the 1890s,
after much acrimonious debate, the present commercial quay was constructed. 7.00pm at the
