January/February 2017
A Letter from the Head
The arrival of a new calendar year each January is always a source
of excitement. 2017 is a particularly notable year for Bodine as it
marks the 45th anniversary of our school's founding.
As we enter this milestone year for Bodine, I am pleased that our
program is stronger than ever and continues to improve year after
year. Our growth is due in part to the fact that every decision we
make is guided by several unwavering philosophies. At Bodine, we
believe that:
•
•
•
•
•
Through the development of an individualized educational
plan and the use of appropriate teaching methodologies,
students are able to work and develop at their own pace.
Multisensory and sequential approaches to the teaching of
reading, writing, and computation skills form the core of the
curriculum.
Exposure to and study of science, history, and the arts provide
a solid base of general information and form the conceptual
basis for reading comprehension and higher learning.
Students are able to function individually and cooperatively in
a structured, supportive environment where goals and
expectations are clearly established.
Students are guided through the process of setting goals and
developing plans for accomplishing their objectives.
I am so proud of Bodine School's accomplished legacy, and I am
confident that we will provide life-changing educational experiences
for years and years to come. Thank you for your continued support of
our school, and I hope you will join me in celebrating 45 years of
Bodine School!

1st and 2nd Graders Paint 901 Rocks
During this time of the year, the
weather is not always on our side;
sometimes it can be too cold and
wet outside to have P.E. classes
outdoors. However, rain or shine,
P.E. class must go on! Recently, our
1st and 2nd graders enjoyed
painting some 901 rocks during an
indoor P.E. class. This fun, indoor
activity was a great way for these youngsters to develop their fine
motor skills and to take turns sharing their painting supplies. The
finished rocks were one of a kind!
2nd Quarter Reading Stats
Our students did quite a lot of reading during the
2nd quarter! According to data gathered from the
Accelerated Reader program, Bodine students read

they read 4,943,257 words during the 2nd quarter (an
increase from 1,840,297 words read during the 1st
quarter). Over the course of the 1st semester, our
students read a grand total of 1,158 books and
6,783,554 words!
Great Turnout for Grandparents & Special Friends Day
On November 22, we celebrated one of
our favorite traditions here at Bodine
School: Grandparents & Special Friends
Day. The morning was full of activity as
students gave performed a few musical
numbers, gave tours of the school,
hopped into the photo booth, and walked
their guests through activities in the Dyslexia Simulation Lab.
Bodine Students Shine in Holiday Music Program
Before students began Winter Break, they
treated their families to this year's holiday
music program: Jingle Bell Jukebox: The
Flipside! Some of the classic holiday songs
performed by our wonderful singers
included "Rudolph the Red-Nosed
Reindeer," "Winter Wonderland," and "Have
Yourself a Merry Little Christmas." Thank you to our music teacher,
Penny Ray, for all her hard work to make the program a hit!
Basketball Season Has Begun!

of games on our website here. Also, be sure
to keep an eye out in the next few months for announcements about
our Spring soccer season!
Homework Hint: Foster Your Child's Curiosity for Words
Have you ever wondered why the plural form
of goose is geese, yet the plural form
of moose is moose? Check out this video for the
answer!
The teachers at Bodine School strive to instill this
same curiosity for words in their students. At
home, you can find many opportunities to help
your child develop a lifelong love for learning words. For example,
play board games that involve vocabulary knowledge, like Apples to
Apples. Ask your child to help you in the kitchen by reading a recipe
to you. Go on a hunt with your child for new and interesting words in
magazines and newspapers. Most importantly, be sure to devote
time every night for independent reading, BIRDS practice, and
fluency practice.
Transition Tip: Share Your Transition Plans with Bodine
As we embark on the second semester of
the school year, many of you are probably
deep in the process of making a transition
plan for the end of this school year. You
and your child are visiting schools, meeting with admissions
representatives, and completing admissions testing. At times, the
process can seem a little overwhelming, but Bodine is here to help
you every step of the way! If you are considering transitioning to a
new school for the 2017-2018 school year, we encourage you to
keep Bodine School informed about your decisions in the transition
process.
