What is foreshadowing?

Foreshadowing: When an author mentions or
hints at something that will happen later in the
text.
An author uses foreshadowing to build
suspense or develop the plot.

A SHADOW is a glimpse of something without
the complete picture

Flashback
Flashback: When an author refers back to
something that already took place in the story.

FLASH = a quick glance at something
BACK = a look back at something that already
happened.

Irony
Irony: The expression of one’s meaning by using language
that normally signifies the opposite, usually for humorous or
empathic effect.
In other, non-English words, IRONY is the use of words
that mean the opposite of what you really think.

1. Get into a group of 4-5
2. As a class, we will watch “Alma” a short film
3. After the film, write down as many examples
of foreshadowing and irony that you see.
4. Also, write down TWO themes
5. Be prepared to share them with the class

grade.
