Jack London.
The December Great Reads
book selection is A Prayer
for Owen Meany by John
Irving.
Buck, a Saint BernardScotch shepherd mixed
breed dog, is stolen from
his California home and taken to Alaska
where dogs are in high demand. Buck is
trained to be a sled dog and he learns to
survive in the Alaskan wilderness. He
goes through several trials and tribulations until he finally finds a good owner
that deserves his loyalty and love. After
his owner’s death, he listens to the ‘call
of the wild’ and lives with a wolf pack.
John Wheelwright and Owen
Meany are best friends who
grew up together in the
1950’s and 60’s, despite their differing
backgrounds. Owen, a boy with an unusual physical condition, believes he is
God’s instrument, put on Earth for a purpose. The boys remain friends into
adulthood, even after Owen accidentally
kills John’s mother with a baseball. Eventually, Owen discovers his life’s purpose.
