Kid Stuff December 11: Winter Reading Program Kick-off Party, 2 p.m. The Winter Reading Program Kick-off Party will include a children’s book sale, a performance by ATA Tae Kwon Do, a bounce house, Wii games, and more. Student-athlete volunteers from the University of North Dakota will be on hand to sign kids up for the program. The Winter Reading Program is for students in grades K-6. It is done in partnership with the University of North Dakota Athletic Department. The mission of the Grand Forks Public Library is to connect the community, enrich the mind, and inspire the imagination. Sign up begins at the kick-off party, and continues throughout the program. The Student Center is for students in grades K-12, including Advanced Placement. The College Center is for undergraduate college students. Tutors can check for grammar, punctuation or spelling errors. Next month: A closer look at the SkillsCenter. The December Great Reads book selection is A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving. Buck, a Saint BernardScotch shepherd mixed breed dog, is stolen from his California home and taken to Alaska where dogs are in high demand. Buck is trained to be a sled dog and he learns to survive in the Alaskan wilderness. He goes through several trials and tribulations until he finally finds a good owner that deserves his loyalty and love. After his owner’s death, he listens to the ‘call of the wild’ and lives with a wolf pack. John Wheelwright and Owen Meany are best friends who grew up together in the 1950’s and 60’s, despite their differing backgrounds. Owen, a boy with an unusual physical condition, believes he is God’s instrument, put on Earth for a purpose. The boys remain friends into adulthood, even after Owen accidentally kills John’s mother with a baseball. Eventually, Owen discovers his life’s purpose.
