PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
To begin with I would like to provide an outline of
arrangements at the school for the rest of the term while Ms
Sena is on Long Service Leave and Mr Jewell undertakes a
four week placement in another school. I will be acting in the
role of Principal for the remainder of the term and Mr Adam
Cairns, the Year 7 and 8 Sub-School Leader will fill my role
as Assistant Principal, while Mr Michael Watson will stand in
for Mr Jewell. Both Mr Cairns and Mr Watson are highly
experienced, know the school very well and I am confident
the students are in good hands.
Last week saw the production of our biennial Cultural
Concert Celebration. The concert featured African,
Polynesian, French, Indian and Spanish themed musical acts
which were not only highly entertaining but really shone a
light on the cultural diversity of the school and the talent of
our students and staff. I would like to thank the performers
and the production staff and crew for the hours of work they
put into creating the show. Particular thanks must go to
Natalie Corvasce and Jarrah O’Hara for directing and putting
the show together. One of the things that always impresses
about school productions is the way students and staff work
together to stage the show. To this end I would like to
acknowledge the technical work of Jason L, Thien T , Ryder
G and Jessica C, the backstage crew of Ross T, Keesha F,
Silviya l, Clare F, Sara M, Nathan B, Angelica B, ElishiaX and
Mateenah M and musical prowess of Serena, Nour, Sarah,
Jack, Lexi, Nicholas and Tony. Also a big thanks to the staff
who worked with the students behind the scenes, Ms
Christian, Ms Trajkovic, Ms Nguyen, Ms Tran, Mr Gulina and
Ms Tatray. A full cast list will appear elsewhere in this
newsletter.
Today we held our annual Regional Schools Constitutional
Convention and, as always it was a challenging and thought
provoking event for our students and the visiting students as
they wrestled with the question ‘Should rights, especially
those of marginalised groups, be protected under the
Australian Constitution?’ As well as the students and teachers
from the visiting schools, the event was supported by the
three tiers of Australian Government. Former Mayor and
current Mayor of the City of Whittlesea, Mary Lalios and
Ricky Kirkham participated, as did the Member for
Thomastown, Bronwyn Halfpenny and the member for the
Federal seat of Scullin, Mr Andrew Giles. All spoke at the
convention and provided the students with a unique insight
into the workings of government and issues around the
making of laws. I am also excited to say we were visited by
the Deputy Premier and Minister of Education, James
Merlino, who gave the closing address at the Convention. At
the conclusion of the Convention, the Minister was given a
short tour of the school and met with staff, students and the
School Council President and Council members. We were
able to talk to the minister and provide him with some
insight into the integral role our school plays in the wider
community, the work our staff do and the achievements of
our students. We were also able to talk about where we see
Lalor Secondary College in the future – a future that I hope
becomes a part of the Minister’s thinking!

Acting Principal
ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS’
REPORTS
I am very grateful for the opportunity to take on the role of
Acting Assistant Principal in Ms Sena’s absence. Since
arriving at Lalor Secondary College 18 months ago, I have
been extremely impressed with the overall conduct and
friendly nature of our students. For the past six months I
have thoroughly enjoyed my role as Junior Sub School
Leader, which has given me a unique insight into the lives of
our students, the opportunities and challenges they face
each day and how we as a staff can make a positive impact
on improving their experience here at Lalor Secondary
College.
I look forward to gaining some valuable experience over the
next four weeks and hope that I can make a positive
contribution to the role.
Adam Cairns
Acting Assistant Principal Years 7 & 8
I’d like to begin by thanking parents of students in Year 9
and 10 for their attendance at the Parent Information
Evenings held over the past week. It was pleasing to see so
many of you brave the cold weather to hear information
about the subject selection process and curriculum offerings

available here at Lalor Secondary College. Our figures show
that over 80% of all Year 10 students kept their
appointments last Friday to meet with a staff member to
plan their Year 11 courses. I would also like to thank Mrs
Edwards, Ms Sakelaris, Ms Chantry, Ms Cujic, Mr Wilkinson,
Ms Spence, Mr Watson and Mr Christou for their time and
informed advice on Counselling Day. Mr Zaekis and Ms
Dipasquantonio also gave of their time to support the
students. I would like to acknowledge the work of Ms Kubeil
for her detailed presentations during the Information
evenings.
teachers who supervised on the day - Mrs Edwards, Mr
Cahill, Ms Chantry, Ms Cujic, Ms Christian, and Mr Matzke.
I would like to remind parents that the online subject
selections close for Year 10 into Year 11 2016 this coming
Friday 21st August, and the following Friday 28th August for
Year 10 2016. Please ensure that your child has completed
the subject selection, printed off a copy for you to sign and
then returned this form to the General Office by the due
date.
Next Tuesday 25th August is our final Parent Information
Session for Year 8 into Year 9 2016 parents.
As part of our Reporting and Assessment review this year,
we are seeking parents’ feedback in relation to the reporting
formats we use here at Lalor Secondary College. We are
interested to find out your thoughts on various aspects of
the Progress Reports and End of Semester reports. Please
see the link below to complete your responses. There are
spaces for you to provide further comments should you wish
to elaborate on the contents of each question. Your
responses together with those of staff and students will be
considered when incorporating any future changes to our
report formats. The survey will remain open until Friday 4th.
Your support and feedback are greatly appreciated. Should
you have any further comments or require clarification
please don’t hesitate to call Ms Kaylene Kubeil (Curriculum
Coordinator,) or to myself here at the College.

Finally I’d like to wish our Year 9 students and staff
attending camp a wonderful time at the Gold Coast. They
depart on Monday August 31 and return Friday 4th
September. They will be supervised by Ms Salerno, Mr
Magnano, Mr Danher, Ms Napier, Ms Christian and Ms
Graetsch. We are looking forward
to hearing about your time away
and hope you can bring back
some of that Gold Coast sunshine
upon your return!
SCHOOL VALUES
Pride Achievement Caring Cooperation Honesty
Congratulations to the following students who recently
received School Values Cards for upholding our school
values:
On Wednesday our Year 10 students went on an excursion
to RMIT and Latrobe Universities. This opportunity was
organised by Ms Annette Spence who saw a real need for
our students to visit the Universities in an attempt to provide
insight as to future pathways. It was also very timely in that
students had to meet with
the Year 10 Student
Management Team to select their Year 11 pathway last
Friday, and in having done so, were exploring University
Courses and the necessary pre-requisite subjects at VCE to
allow entry to identified courses. Students found the day
enjoyable and highly informative. I wish to also thank the

As part of a Principal Preparation Program run by the Bastow
Institute of Educational Leadership I will be spending the
next four weeks, commencing on Monday the 24th of August,
shadowing a Principal at another Victorian school. This
means that I will not be available until next term and Michael
Watson will be taking on the duties associated with my
position. Michael should be contacted in relation to all items
relating to Years 11 and 12 during this time.
The Year 11 Information Evening was held on Tuesday the
11th of August with a good turnout of parents to this event.
The information presented covered a range of issues
including the demands and expectations of VCE, careers, and
the subject selection process. This was followed by the Year
11 subject counselling day held on Friday the 14th of August,
again with a terrific turn out of both students and parents.
All Year 10 students should have had their subject selection
forms completed and submitted to the General Office by
today. Failure to do this will mean that planning for 2016
moves ahead without the consideration of that student’s
selections and could mean missing out on preferred subjects
in 2016 for those students.
All students who are completing exams for Unit 3/4 subjects
at the end of the year will be involved in the Indicative Exam
Program held over the holidays from Friday the 25th of
September to Wednesday the 30th of September. These
exams provide excellent practice for students and will
provide quality feedback to them on their progress to date.
Teachers will also use these exams to assist them with
estimating their indicative grades which they report to VCAA
as an estimate on what they think each student can achieve
in the final exam. All parents will be emailed a copy of this
schedule with an attached letter outlining the purpose and
value of these exams, while all students involved will receive
their own personal copy in the coming weeks.
The Year 12 students are also currently involved in
completing their VTAC applications. This is an online process
that all students must complete if they wish to attend
University or TAFE in 2016. Each student is meeting with our
Careers Coordinator Ms Chantry to receive advice and
guidance on this important process, as well as receiving
information on scholarships and Special Entry Access
Schemes. I encourage all parents of Year 12 students to sit
down and go through this process with them so you have an
understanding of what is involved and what your child is
planning for 2016.

YEAR 9 ALTERNATE PROGRAM
All students not attending the Queensland Camp were given
a permission letter regarding the alternate program
operating at school from August 31st to September 4th. The
payment of $30, due on Monday, covers the cost of a
restaurant lunch, a lunch at school and materials to be used
during the program.
No other Year 9 classes will be held during this period of
time.

eBOOKS & RESOURCE LISTS
IN 2016
It is now that time of year where many students in the
school are currently in the process of making subject
selection choices for completion next year. After all of the
student placements have been finalised and confirmed, all
students will be receiving their Resources Lists. It is of vital
importance that if students are to be successful in each of
their subjects, that they have the correct equipment. Many
specialist subjects have very specific equipment that must be
purchased by the students. We work very closely with our
school supplier, Campion, to ensure that our Resource Lists
are very detailed in communicating the specific equipment
that each student requires for each subject.
With the increased use of technology being rolled out within
the school, we believe that is it timely that the school
introduces the use of eBooks as an alternative to traditional
textbooks. On the 2016 Resource lists for any textbook
where there is an eBook available, this option will also be
listed. This choice will only be offered for textbooks and not
for novels. Novels will still need to be purchased as a hard
copy as this assists the student when taking notes and
annotating certain parts of the novel.
The choice of whether to have a traditional textbook, which
typically comes with the eBook option, or to just purchase
the eBook is based on the individual. The school is allowing
parents and students to have choice in this matter, the only
requirement that we as the school have is that the student
has the textbook – either as a hard copy or as the eBook.
If a student does chose to only purchase the eBook, then it
must be treated in the same manner as a traditional
textbook, that is, it is expected to be brought to every class
and every student must have the text book. If an eBook only
is purchased, then the student is responsible for ensuring
that they have their device ready to access the text within
the classroom. The device must be charged and able to be
used. Most eBooks are web-based applications with a code,
so most devices will be able to be used as a platform for the
eBook.
Further information will also be attached to the Resource
lists when they are distributed early in Term 4. If you have
any issues or queries relating to textbooks, eBooks or
equipment, then please feel free to contact me at the school.

SBAT
On the 6th of August a group of Year 10 students attended
the Northern Region’s School Based Apprenticeship (SBAT)
Session at the Outer Northern Trade Training Centre. Each
student was able to sample on a rotational basis four areas
based on their interest. Areas that were available for
students to undertake were: Hospitality, Beauty,
Hairdressing, Automotive, Engineering, Sport and Fitness,
Bricklaying, Wall and Floor Tiling, Child Care, Business, IT,
Civil Construction and Carpentry. The sessions had very
practical activities which simulated real life experiences
which were designed for students to experience the various
options available as school based apprentices or
trainees. Each session was delivered by industry, training
organisations and employers (such as Melbourne
Polytechnic, SAGE, VFA, Pivot Hairdressing, Apprenticeships
Plus etc) whose
knowledge
and
experience
proved to be invaluable for students.
All students had what can only be described as an amazing
time. They were able to attain useful information and make
industry contacts, which was fantastic. On behalf of Jackie
Cujic and myself I would like to congratulate all students for
their exemplary behaviour and being great ambassadors for
our school.

POETRY RECITATION FINALS
"Wow what a final!! I heard it was intense. Well done to all
students! It was very close."
These were the words of the Poetry Competition Coordinator, Ester Marcuccio.
We are extremely proud of the great achievement of our
Year 12 Italian students.
The Victorian Premier’s Reading
Challenge is soon coming to an
end, on Friday 11 September 2015.
Previously, I mentioned that our
registered Challengers have read a total of 504 books.
Currently, we have 33 students who have completed the
Challenge and along with all registered students, they have
read a total 948 books! We are getting close to perhaps
breaking our record from last year.
Students are reminded and encouraged to go into their
Reading Challenge account on www.education.vic.gov.au\prc
to enter the books they have read online. Once these books
have been entered, it is important that students also indicate
that these books are ‘finished’ and providing star ratings for
each book read. It is essential that the save button is used
to save any changes! They have four weeks left to complete
this task.
The Library Book Club regularly meets every Tuesday
lunchtime.
Last week, the club readers played an
entertaining game called, Guess the Character. Each
member develops some clues based on their favourite book
character, such as a description of character, their likes and
dislikes, and what their ideal birthday present would be.
Thank you to Theodore Petropoulos and Gabriel Boyle for
sharing their clues in this newsletter:
1. Description of Character: He is honour bound and an
adventure seeker. He goes to extreme
lengths to help and save his friends. He
is loyal, likes training and being at
Camp Half Blood.
Ideal Birthday Present: He already
likes his sword so I would probably get
him another magical item because it
would make life easier.
2. Description of Character: Smart
and mature, unlike the rest of his
group. He is also somewhat emotional and has opinions
about everyone around him.
Likes: His own long hair, Elvis
Presley, Paul Newman, Johnny Cade
Dislikes: Getting his hair cut, The
Beatles, Darry, SOCs
Ideal Birthday Present: A wig
which is an exact replica of his
former hairstyle
Congratulations! Auguri! Cogratulations! Auguri Auguri!

MELBOURNE CONNECT STUDY SKILLS
DAY FRIDAY 2 OCTOBER 2015
INFORMATION EVENINGS
Come along to the University of Melbourne and let us
help you prepare for your VCE exams!
You will hear from an academic speaker and attend sessions
on developing the best study skills to get you through exams
including a VCE English revision lecture. You will also have
the opportunity to hear from current University students who
came from schools in your area about how they get the most
out of their study time and the transition from VCE to
University.
This event is exclusively for Year 12 VCE students and Year
11 students who are taking a VCE unit 3 - 4 subjects from
select schools.
Over the last two weeks, current year 9, 10 and 11 students
and their parents have had the chance to attend information
evenings at the college. These meetings have covered
important information for students who will be completing
year 10, 11 or 12 in 2016. Subject selection, career
pathways and VCE and VCAL guidelines were discussed by
key staff members within Lalor Secondary College. These
evenings were a fantastic opportunity for students and
parents to develop their knowledge of VCE/VCAL and the
post-secondary opportunities that are available to young
people.
YEAR 12 VTAC
APPLICATIONS ARE UNDERWAY!
All parents/guardians who have a child in year 12 would
have received a letter this week Last week students in Year
12 have been assisted by Ms Chantry in their scheduled
VTAC appointments to start inputting their university and
TAFE preferences onto the VTAC website. Thus far students
have been well organised, prepared and eager to get this
process started. Students are reminded that they are able to
change their preferences via www.vtac.edu.au . Students
should now be considering applying for SEAS or Scholarships
if they meet eligibility requirements. Students wanting
assistance with scholarships or SEAS can sign up to work
shops which are being held after school on selected days.
(See the study centre to signup)
It is important that all Year 12 students review the Extra
Requirements for every course that they have applied for.
Failure to complete these requirements will make the course
application ineligible.
As always, Ms Chantry available to assist students with any
questions they may have in regards to course preferences,
SEAS and Scholarships, I remind parents to encourage their
child to come to their appointments having already done
their research on the courses they wish to apply for.

YEAR 9 KICKSTART PROGRAM
Two weeks ago selected year 9 boys had their first session
as part of the Kickstart program. The students did some
team building and then had an information session from the
Epping youth police
resource
officers.
Topics covered ranged
from how to become a
police officer, young
people’s rights, the
truth about the right
and wrongs of the law
and the impact a
simple choice may
effect the rest of your
life.
Last
week
students were given a
tour of the Heidelberg
Melbourne Polytechnic
campus
where
students were able to
see firsthand different forms of education being delivered in
a TAFE setting. The boys got to see plumbing, electrical,
building and construction and even ran into two of our
students who just recently transitioned into full time
bricklaying pre- apprenticeships.
