Brankin On Wednesday of last week we celebrated the Feast of the Holy Cross—and I am so grateful that we actually have a relic of the True cross right here at Saint Odilo Parish. That’s right—two tiny little slivers of wood—from the very Cross on which the Body of Jesus was splayed—The very wood to which He was nailed and over which was smeared His Blood—and we have a piece of it. There are very few meditations quite like the meditation we make in the presence of the True Cross. Yes—that is it! The Cross—it all begins and ends with the Cross—always the Cross. We begin and end all our prayers with the Sign of the Cross—And how beautiful is the full Spanish Sign of the Cross: Por la senal de la Santa Cruz—de nuestros enemigos—Libranos Senor Dios—en el nombre—del Padre y de Hijo—y del lo Spiritu Santo. “By the Sign of the Holy Cross—deliver us from our enemies, Lord God, in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost.” And then the fingers in the shape of a cross are kissed. We don’t kiss the thumb—we are kissing the cross. We enter and we leave the church and cross ourselves—then we kneel down and pray before the cross. In the ceremony of Baptism— Even before the child is actually baptized—the priest signs the child with the cross—as if to warn the child that the Crucified One is the one to whom that child is going to belong—and it may mean his crucifixion as well. Our children then receive their First Holy Communion directly under the Cross—to let them know whose Sacred Body and Blood that really is that they receive. Husbands and wives pledge their lives and their future before the Cross—unto death—much as His Life was pledged to us. And then at the end our lives the priest seals our deaths as he puts a cross of holy oil on our head and hands and feet— and eyes and mouths and ears. We who have lived under the Cross now die in its arms. If there is anything that marks us as belonging to Jesus—it is the Cross. Of course, the Cross started out as capital punishment for non-Roman low-born criminals. The cross was the Roman version of the electric chair—and how ugly and gruesome that is. And Our Lord was executed on that Cross—but by His most merciful Love—he transformed that execution into the all-redeeming Sacrifice of Redemption. He changed the brutal blood-stained Cross of the Romans into the beautiful sweet instrument of God’s life and hope—that we all know and love. But why not? Love always yields life—you see it in the love of husband and wife—you see it in the love of families. They love each other and life happens. You see the same dynamic even on the Cross. In the irony of our faith—Jesus’ love conquers death even in the act of dying. The tree by which Adam and Eve forfeited eternal life has now become the tree of our Salvation. His love yields life. And what more beautiful way do we partake of this sacrifice of Love and Life—than in the Mass. We can never ever think that the Holy Mass is just a bunch of nice prayers said by the nice priest—in front of the nice people. Too often these days—and the danger is particularly clear with the Novus Ordo Mass—the Mass has become—an opportunity for the priest to show off his holiness and his sincerity—and how much he really means it! The Mass becomes—too often—an opportunity for the people to get their spiritual thrills and an emotional charge out of the peppy music and loud responses and the unctuous words—and everyone can show everyone else how happy and sociable Jesus makes them feel. Well that is not it. Something is happening at the Mass—every Mass—and what is happening—is the Cross—and nothing less than the Cross. The Cross from two thousand years ago is right here—right now. Those steps are the hill at Calvary—and we climb them with Jesus every time we ascend that altar to offer sacrifice. And that altar is Golgotha—the skull place—the actual altar on which the Son of God is sacrificed—once and for all— two thousand years ago—and yet today! And right in the middle of Golgotha—raised high for all to see—is the Son of God offering Himself—on the Cross and by means of the Cross—once again—though in an unbloody manner—for our salvation. In the Mass—every time we say the Mass—Jesus gives Himself to the Father so that our sins would be forgiven and we could go to heaven. The Sacrifice of our redemption is not some past and gone historical event that we remember fondly—No it is given to us again and again at every Mass—every day—it is made available to us—every time we say Mass! How does that happen? I mentioned it last week—but when the priest says This is My Body—and This is my Blood—at the word This , the bread becomes the Body of Christ—really truly substantially—and the wine becomes the Blood of Christ—really truly substantially. There is no more bread and wine on the altar—it is gone—it is changed—it is Him! And not just his flesh and blood—as if it were His Skin and His Corpuscles—but Jesus Whole and Entire—His mind— His Heart—His person—and His Body and Blood—and on the Cross! What happens is that at the utterance of those words—This is My Body—This is my Blood—the Cross from two thousand years ago—in the moment of the offering of Jesus—the sacrifice of the Son of God—that moment is plucked out of heaven and put right there on that altar. In the Middle Ages—people had the devotion that for however long you were at Mass—you did not age. And why not believe that? What is going on here is that Eternity—God’s world—heaven—is crashing in on our world. Jesus offering Himself to the Father—present on this Altar—sweeps us all up in His Arms and He embraces us and holds us close to Him and to His Cross and He takes us to the Father and says: Father as you love me—love them—and as you accept my Sacrifice—accept them—and save them. Have mercy on them. Forgive them their sins—listen to their prayers—grant them comfort in times of sorrow— strength in times of weakness—joy in times of sadness. And if they are praying for the souls in Purgatory—look upon those souls with the same love! Oh, Father—do this—for the sake of the love You have for Your Son. And the Father does it—and at every Mass. The Mass is the Cross, and the Cross is the sacrifice that brings forward to our time—to this moment—from so long ago—the very Sacrifice by which we were saved. And the Mass besides really making present the Sacrifice of Calvary—is its own unbloody sacrifice. No—Jesus does not die again—He does not suffer again. It is unbloody—But there is an offering here—which we call an oblation where we give ourselves to God in Jesus and say “Lord, we are Yours. Do with us as you please.” And there is an immolation—where something happens to the Victim—and in the Mass Jesus is the Victim—and His Body and Blood happens. What a prayer—what a privilege—we are at Calvary at every Mass—and Calvary is brought to us at every Mass. The Mass is not a meal—it is not a party—it is not like Thanksgiving dinner that I once heard a priest use as an example to explain the Mass. No. The Mass is the Cross—the Cross of Christ on which he died—but from which we live In Honor of the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi St. Odilo Parish will be having our annual Pet Blessing Saturday, October 1st at 1PM in the Church Parking Lot Group Contact Information Armory of Christ-708-681-6879 Guadalupanos-708-484-2161 Legion of Mary -708-623-9280 Knights of Columbus-708-204-3761 Blue Army of Our Lady of Fatima -708-484-1204 Little Flowers-469-487-9506 or [email protected] ESL-708-287-7347 Spred-708-287-7347 Ushers-708-788-8136 For information about making Confirmation or First Communion please call the CCD office at 708-4845321.
