Entering his fifth year as head coach, Chuck Barbee has helped push Army’s wrestling program back
into the national spotlight.
Barbee, who began his tenure at West Point in 2000, was brought in to restore the prominence of
the wrestling team by developing All-American talent. Barbee got off to a strong start in his first season
by guiding Maurice Worthy to an EIWA championship and an appearance at the NCAA Tournament in
St. Louis, Mo. Worthy’s successful season ended after finishing as the national runner-up at 174
pounds, becoming the Black Knights’ first All-America wrestler in 14 years.
In 2001-02, Barbee’s resume of success stories was lengthened by the addition of Phillip Simpson.
Despite being a highly touted rookie, Simpson could never have been expected to produce the
amazing season that he did. Under the tutelage of Barbee, Simpson qualified for the NCAA Tournament after completing his plebe year with 37 wins (20 by pinfall). Simpson would finish just one win
short of All-America recognition.
Boosted by the performances of Simpson, Jeremy Conner and John Paxton, the wrestling team
enjoyed one of its best seasons, finishing with an 8-8 dualmatch record.
Never one to reject a challenge, Barbee loaded the 2001-02
season with a number of nationally-recognized opponents such
as Penn State, North Carolina, Hofstra and Lehigh. The Black
Knights stayed competitive throughout the season and even
pulled an upset over the No. 19 Wisconsin Badgers, 27-9.
The following year, Simpson returned to the NCAA Tournament, improving enough to take third in the 141-pound weight
class. His third-place showing locked up his first All-America
nod. The sophomore was joined by teammates Bernard Gardner
and John Paxton in Kansas City. Barbee has led five different
Black Knight wrestlers to four NCAA Tournament appearances
during his four-year tenure at the helm.
In 2003-04, Simpson became Army’s first two-time All-American since Bob Robbins, capturing the honors at the 157-pound
weight class. Sophomore Luke Calvert also qualified for the
NCAA Championships. The team finished 7-7 in dual matches.
Barbee continues to schedule some of the best teams in
the country. This season, Army is slated to face Oklahoma,
Michigan and Hofstra, along with the challenging EIWA schedule, which includes Lehigh.
Before Barbee began his tenure at the United States Military Academy, he served as the head
assistant at the University of Oklahoma. From 1997-2000, Barbee coached under the tutelage of
former Army assistant and Big 12 “Coach of the Year” Jack Spates. Spates was an assistant coach at the
Academy when the 1986-87 squad won the only EIWA championship in Army wrestling history.
Barbee coached seven All-Americans and four national finalists during his tenure at Oklahoma,
helping the Sooners build one of the country’s top wrestling programs. He has coached nearly 30
national qualifiers in the last six years and was also partly responsible for helping bring in a Top 10
recruiting class in each of his three years with the Sooners, keeping Oklahoma among the elite. The
Sooners placed 10th, sixth and fourth at the NCAA Championships during Barbee’s stay on the
coaching staff.
Aside from his coaching experience at OU, Barbee served as the head coach of the 1999 Big 12 AllStar team versus Korea. He was also the Sunkist Kids freestyle coach at the 2000 Olympic Trials and
coach for the Team Excel Freestyle Club from 1997 through 1999.
A 1993 graduate of Oklahoma State University, Barbee was a three-time NCAA All-American for
coach Joe Seay. He was a prominent contributor in leading the Cowboys to successive national titles
in 1989 and 1990. He was also a two-time Academic All-American, a Big Eight Champion in 1991 and
Espoir and University National Freestyle Champion. Barbee was a member of the Espoir World Cup
team in 1988 and was a Junior National Freestyle All-American. During Barbee’s competitive career, he
trained with wrestling legends John Smith, Kendall Cross, Alan Fried, Pat Smith and Kenny Monday.
As Army continues its return to national glory Barbee will be leading the way. He is a master
technician and a tremendous motivator who the wrestlers like. As Barbee integrates gifted athletes
into the West Point pipeline, the tradition of Army wrestling is certain to prosper.
Barbee and his wife Sally live in Cornwall, N.Y., with their four children: Alexa, 12; Grace 7; Liza 5
and Tony 3.

Mike Clayton, a four-time letterwinner at Navy, was most
recently the head wrestling coach at the Newport News Apprentice School in Newport News, Va. During his five years at the
helm of the Builders, Clayton mentored 30 National Collegiate
Wrestling Association (NCWA) All-Americans and eight national
champions. He also increased the team size from eight wrestlers
upon his arrival in 1999 to 30 in 2003 by developing a national
recruiting base. Clayton’s 2003-04 roster featured athletes from
14 different states.
For the final three years of his tenure at the Apprentice School, Clayton doubled as an
academic instructor and taught Business Operations/Leadership, Ship Construction and
Microsoft Office courses. One of his major accomplishments as an instructor was developing a partnership with the U.S. Naval Academy’s leadership department as part of his business operations course.
Immediately following his graduation from Navy in 1995, Clayton, a Lieutenant in the
U.S. Navy Supply Corps, was named an assistant wrestling coach for the Midshipmen and
served in that role for five months before heading to Athens, Ga., to complete the 27-week
Navy Supply Corps Officers Basic Qualification School. While there, Clayton earned a spot on
the All-Navy wrestling team, capturing a silver medal at the 1996 Armed Forces Championships and placing fourth at the Chattanooga, Tenn., Olympic Regionals.
Clayton is single and currently resides in Cornwall on Hudson, N.Y.

FIRST SEASON w IOWA STATE ’02
Bill Maldonado comes to West Point after spending the last six
years in Ames, Iowa, at Iowa State. A 2002 NCAA All-American, he
earned a bachelor’s degree in Spanish in 2002 and was awarded a
master’s degree in education in 2004.
During his undergraduate days, Maldonado led the Cyclones to a
pair of NCAA runner-up finishes and earned All-America honors following a sixth-place finish at 149 pounds at the NCAA Championships in Albany, N.Y., as a senior. Additionally, Maldonado was team
captain his final season. He was a four-time NCAA Qualifier during his college career, which
included a year at Georgia State.
Since graduating in 2002, Maldonado has been the head coach of the Cyclone Wrestling Club.
The squad is Iowa State’s freestyle wrestling team that prepares wrestlers for the Olympic
Games. Cael Sanderson, who wrestled for Iowa State and is the only undefeated four-time NCAA
champion, was a member of the Cyclone Wrestling Club.
While working on his master’s degree, Maldonado also spent time as a graduate assistant
Strength and Conditioning coach, along with working in the Minority Student Affairs Office as a
graduate assistant.
Maldonado and his wife, Sandra, currently reside in New Windsor, N.Y.

Junior Andy Henry, returns as the early
favorite to start in the 125-pound weight class.
An EIWA placewinner at 125 pounds last season, Henry started the majority of the matches.
Army head coach Chuck Barbee expects big
things from Henry.
“If he trains right, gets his weight down
and stays focused, he could be wrestling at the
NCAA Tournament this year,” says Barbee.
Henry, last year’s “Most Improved” award
winner, will see some stiff competition in ranking matches. A pair of freshmen, Fernando
Martinez and Travis Featherstone, should push
him in the preseason.
Martinez was an Indiana state champion
in 2003, while Featherstone was a two-time
state qualifier in California. Both are tough athletes, who will make Henry work hard in preseason workouts.
Sophomores Thang Tran and Brad Ortman
should contribute depth to the 125-weight class
and help make it one of the strengths of this
year’s squad.

149
Senior Phillip Simpson, an NCAA AllAmerica in the 157-pound weight class last season, is dropping down to 149 pounds this year.
The move makes him the unquestioned starter
at the weight class.
Simpson, a two-time All-American, is closing in on many of Army’s all-time records. His
31-6 mark last year boosted his career total to
105 victories, just 22 shy of becoming the
Academy’s career leader.
With the elder Simpson brother, the 149pound weight class is shaping up to be one of
Army’s biggest strengths.
“We have high expectations for Phillip as
a returning All-American,” says Barbee. “His goal
is to become a national champion. After what
he has shown the past two years, we think
that is a very realistic goal and we want to push
him to reach that goal.”
Senior T.J. Tepley, one of this year’s cocaptains, should be geared for his best year at
West Point. The Ohio native went 6-3 at 149pound a season ago.
Freshmen Aaron Wernimont and Christian
Snook will be in the mix as well. Wernimont,
an Iowa state champion in 2003 and a fourtime state qualifier, has impresed the coaching
staff. Snook, who hails from Pennsylvania, was
a two-time state qualifier while competing in
high school.
“Both freshmen are outstanding,” praises
Barbee. “Even if Phillip stayed at 157, we still
would have been in good shape. We have sev-

eral studs in this group. I am feeling very good
about 149 this year.”
157
Phillip Simpson, an EIWA champion and
an NCAA All-American in the 157-pound weight
class last season, has dropped down to the 149pound division, opening the door for several
wrestlers to step up.
Freshman Brandon Benson and junior Jon
Anderson have the inside track after looking
strong during the preseason. Barbee figures that
one of the two will emerge in the starter’s role.
Benson, a two-time Oklahoma state champion, has shown his talent in early season workouts.
Anderson, who wrestled in the 125-pound
weight class two years ago as a plebe, has
worked his way up to the 157-pound division,
and has looked impressive, as well.
“Benson and Anderson are two of the guys
who I expect to challenge for the starter’s spot,
depending on whether or not Simpson is there
or not,” remarks Barbee.
165
Junior Chad Marzec appears to be the early
favorite in the 165-pound weight class. A twoyear veteran, Marzec put together a solid 4-3
mark last season, wrestling behind Kurt Pryor,
who graduated last May.
“Chad has been an off and on starter for us
each of the past two seasons,” notes Barbee.
“He needs to turn the corner for us this year
and become a national qualifier.”
Marzec, who lost multiple overtime ranking matches to Pryor, has good wrestling experience and should be ready to make the jump
to being a full-time starter.
He will be tested mostly by senior Doug
Reynolds and sophomore Stephen Anastasia.
Reynolds has seen limited duty through-

2004-05 BLACK KNIGHTS
Coach Barbee envisions a strong and
healthy competition for the starting job at 133
pounds. Junior Tony Severo, a back up to last
season’s team captain Bernard Gardner, returns
and is expected to be one of the top challengers
to replace the two-time EIWA placewinner.
Severo went 7-3 overall last year, serving
as Gardner’s backup. The experience that he
gained in 2003 will help his development process as he strives to make the leap into the
starting rotation.
Joining Severo in the hunt to start in the
133-pound weight class is sophomore Frank
Baughan. Baughan was last year’s Crum Memorial Award winner as the most courageous freshman. In addition to battling Severo, the North
Potomac, Md., native will have to adjust to a
new weight class this season. Last year,
Baughan wrestled at 125 pounds, where he
went 5-5 in 2003.
Barbee is confident that whoever emerges
from this competition will be up to the task of
replacing Gardner, who was 25-11 last season.
“I think that whoever comes out on top in
that ranking match is going to be a pretty tough
competitor for us.”
There are several up-and-coming wrestlers
who will help add depth to this unit. Sophomore Michael Tatz, who did not appear in any
matches as a freshman, is one of the athletes
that has impressed Barbee.
for the starting position in the
141-pound weight class this
season. Junior Patrick Simpson,
last year’s starter, is the early
favorite to assume the top position again. The brother of
two-time All-American Phillip
Simpson, Patrick went 19-15
overall a year ago, including a
7-6 mark in dual matches .
“Patrick is really driven;
he is always striving to become
the best wrestler that he can
be,” observes Barbee. “Training
with his brother helps him tremendously, and they make
each other better wrestlers.”
Simpson will have to hold
off sophomore Rush Williams,
who is making a charge at the starting role. A
three-time state qualifier in Ohio during his
high school career, Williams split time between
the 141- and 149-pound weight classes in 200304. He posted a mark of 6-7 overall.
“Rush is extremely tough,” comments
Barbee. “I think we will have a tremendous
battle on our hands at 141”
SEASON OUTLOOK
Luke Calvert
out his first three seasons at Army. The Huntsville, Ala., native went 2-7 last season and sports
a career mark of 4-12.
Anastasia, meanwhile, did not appear in
any matches last year as a plebe. He has demonstrated flashes of strong potential and is poised
to compete for a starting spot.
Should Marzec slip from his spot at the top
of the depth chart, both Reynolds and Anastasia
are capable reserves.
2004-05 BLACK KNIGHTS
174
Junior Gabriel Lucero returns to Army for
his third year and is the preliminary favorite to
retain his hold on the starter’s position in the
174-pound weight class.
“Gabriel wrestled well last year, and we
are looking for even bigger things out of him
this season,” explains Barbee.
For Lucero to retain the top spot in this
division, he will have to hold off a plethora of
challengers.
Freshman Scott Ferguson, who spent last
year at USMAPS, has impressed Barbee.
“Ferguson had an outstanding year at the
prep school,” remarks Barbee. “He is a very developed young man, and we think that he will
come in and be very competitive within a couple
of months.”
Sophomores Chris McElrath and Brent
Smith are also in the mix to claim the starting
spot at 174 pounds.
McElrath authored an 0-2 record in limited
action last season, while Smith posted a 2-2
mark. Both have matured and grown over the
offseason, and should be on the verge of making an impact on the Army program.
“McElrath and Smith are dark horses in
there right now, but I think they both have the
talent to challenge Ferguson,” says Barbee.
the 184-pound weight class
last season, is the clear favorite to reclaim the starting
position in 2004-05.
Coming off of a 24-10 campaign that culminated in
qualifying for the NCAA
Championships, Calvert, a
big and powerful wrestler, is
poised for an even better
year.
“One of our goals is to see
Luke become an NCAA champion,” says Barbee. “We
want to see him standing on
the podium at the end of the
year. Based on what he demonstrated last season, I really think the sky is the limit for Luke.”
In order to retain his hold on the starting
position, Calvert will have to hold off a number of challengers.
Juniors Charles Martin and Jason Norwood
along with freshman Brent Nowak are all expected to push Calvert.
“I think we have good dept at 184,” remarks Barbee. “I am confident that Charles,
Jason and Brent will all compete well when
called upon.”
197
The 197-pound weight class is up for
grabs, according to Barbee. Junior Todd Wisman,
who came on strong at the end of last season,
could be considered the slight favorite, but it
really is an open race.
Sophomore Connor Sanders and senior
Tye Reedy are another couple of strong challengers.
Sanders wrestled at 174 pounds last season and is making the move up a couple of
weight classes.
Reedy is a solid veteran who has developed with each year at the Academy.
Freshmen Travis Young and Chad Plaisted
are also expected to step into the competition.
Young is coming off of a strong year at USMAPS,
where he posted a 17-5 record. Plaisted, meanwhile, was an Oregon state qualifier in 2003.
“It is really wide open, and I am excited to
see who is going to step up and seize the starting role,” says Barbee. “They have all shown
flashes during the preseason workouts, and I
think we will be in good shape at 197, no matter who emerges from the pack.”
HEAVYWEIGHT
Senior Joe Forsman is the early favorite to
get the lead role in the heavyweight class. After starting for two seasons at 197 pounds,
Forsman bulked up and is ready to make the
transition.
“We all think that Joe can become a darn
good heavyweight for us,” says Barbee. “He has
been working hard over the offseason, and we
are all expecting big things out of him.”
Junior James Hollis, who has been a spot
starter for Army the past couple of years, will
be in the mix, as well. Hollis won the GrecoRoman wrestling event this summer at the Pan
American Junior Championships.
“James wrestled well this summer,” says
Barbee. “He will be right there competing with
Joe all year long.”
Freshmen Nathan Thobaben, Raffi
Mnatzakanian and Scott Clark are talented
plebes whom Barbee thinks could surprise some
people this year.
OVERVIEW
With several returning starters, including
an NCAA All-American in Phillip Simpson and
another NCAA qualifier in Calvert, the outlook
is promising for Army wrestling in 2004-05.
The schedule, which includes dual
matches with several team ranked in the preseason top 25, will help the squad prepare itself for postseason competitions.
The non-conference slate includes duals
against powerhouses such as Michigan and
Oklahoma, while the EIWA docket features
perennial power Lehigh.
“We are a solid dual meet team, but we
need guys to step up another notch to become
a good tournament team,” explains Barbee.
Barbee’s goals include beating Navy, performing well at the EIWA Championships and
advancing as many wrestlers as possible to the
NCAA Championships.
