The buildings are the first U.S. examples of modern architecture to be considered for the list, which includes the Sydney Opera House, the city of Brasilia, the Bauhaus School in Germany and the works of Antoni Gaudi. Of the more than 1,000 World Heritage sites worldwide, just 22 are located in the U.S. They include Independence Hall in Philadelphia and Monticello, the home of Thomas Jefferson in Charlottesville, Va. Throughout his career, Wright was known for integrating buildings with the environment. Located in Mill Run, Fayette County, Fallingwater was designed in 1935 partly over a waterfall for the Kaufmann family, founders of the Pittsburgh department store now occupied by Macy's. The dossier for all the Wright properties nominated for the World Heritage List was coordinated by Lynda Waggoner, director of Fallingwater. "It is a complex nomination that explains the significance of each building and its outstanding universal value," Waggoner said in a statement. "We had to demonstrate how each represents a masterpiece of human creative genius and is an extraordinary contribution to modern architecture and culture." The other nine Wright buildings nominated are: Unity Temple in Oak Park, Ill.; Frederick C. Robie House in Chicago; Taliesin in Spring Green, Wis.; Hollyhock House in Los Angeles; Herbert and Katherine Jacobs House in Madison, Wis.; Taliesin West in Scottsdale, Ariz.; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York City; Price Tower in Bartlesville, Okla., and Marin County Civic Center in San Rafael, Calif. Built between 1906–1969, all the Wright buildings nominated already have been designated as U.S. National Historic Landmarks. The World Heritage Committee is expected to make its decision about Fallingwater and the other Wright works in the summer of 2016 after a series of site visits during 2015.
