FUNCTION TECHNICAL POSSIBILITIES Halls for sports activities and gymnasiums Lindab lightweight construction solutions Buildings or objects are always realized to serve some purpose or to satisfy certain functions. Therefore it is worth to sum up, in general, the most important factors that influence the final design of a building (without a claim for completeness): builders’ needs: function, aesthetics, expected lifetime, construction and operating (maintenance) costs requirements of competent authorities (on EU, national or local levels), eg: town planning or town development aspects technical requirements (construction legislation, regulations, standards, etc.) available construction material, construction products and processes local aspects relating to the work site and to the execution of the construction works (eg. soil conditions, weather or environmental impacts, execution processes, and time- and machinery needs, etc.) For the construction of gym halls and sports halls with confined spaces, excellent solutions are offered by Lindab’s lightweight steel structure construction products and the systems, subsystems that can be created by using these products. The numerous conditions listed above contain both mandatory and more flexible aspects – even contradictory ones in certain cases – therefore, the technical specifitactions should be specified individually that can meet all the requirements at some expected level (even if at the cost of comprosies) and which become finally interpreted as ensuring a match with this wide-ranging conditions system. It is therefore has high importance that the economic construction of each building at the required technical quality level must take place on the basis of an individual design. Among the requirements set out for buildings serving the purpose of sports and physical exercise, the most important one is a compliance with the given function. In the design of school gym halls or sports halls, the primary aspect is to provide the required space or proper dimensions for the purpose of sports or physical excerise. The dimensions needed for physical education at school are set out by applicable standards; the official dimensions of sports-ground or play-fields are also regulated in function of the given branch of sport, which sets the basis for specifying the required hall dimensions. Due to these requirements, these buildings are typically hall structures with large span and clear height. A sports hall must or can be supplemented by various service spaces (eg. store rooms, changing rooms, bathrooms, offices, conference rooms, etc.) specified partly by mandatory normative specifications and partly by individual builder needs. The following are the main subsystems of Lindab’s lightweight hall structures: Primary framing structure in steel Secondary framing structures Roof- and wall-cladding systems Supplementary systems, accessories The primary framing structure of Lindab halls is a spatial framework made from linearly sequenced planar frames and bracing systems. Three main frame types are available: solid-section frames are hot rolled, welded I-profile frames of variable cross-sections, and main lattice girder structures. Numerous further variants of these main types are possible, depending on further installations such as side-aisles, intermediate storey(s), crane-runway(s), etc. A tailor-made solution in conformity with builders’ needs (functional, aesthetics) and the technical requirements is realized in each case through individual design, that produces the required large dimensions (span, clear height), as well as the relevant optimised material consumption and, through this, economy. The surface protection solutions for the structural elements of main frames must be specified with view to needs and available options, which might be multi-layer painting or hot-dip galvanizing. Upon the primary framing structure of halls, the so-called secondary loadbearing system is installed, which directly supports the roof- and wall sheeting and which transfers loads to the primary framing. Most frequently the secondary load-bearing system is constructed by using the optimized lightweight profiles of the Lindab Construline product family (linearly distributed load-bearing roof purlin- and wall-stud systems), ensuring excellent loadbearing capacities through high strength, and a long-lasting corrosionresistance through the hot-dip galvanisation surface protection. The secondary framing can be realized by using Lindab Coverline structural elements too, using high-profile trapezoidal sheeting on roofs and structural wall-cassette products on walls. The Lindab Coverline profiled sheeting products available with several coating types and in numberless colours provide safe and watertight roofing, and durable and aesthetical wall cladding not only for the gym hall itself but also for the service building block. This group of products offers several architectural solutions for the design of the external cladding: simple, lined-looking trapezoidal profiles in a range of dimensions, and also with “design” patterns available optionally; elegant sinusoidal profiles; facade wallcassettes providing a strongly marked rectangular pattern (ECO and Premium types); or even standing seam sheetings (SRP, PLX) are available. The sandwich panels of various types (all with steel sheeting at both sides with a thermal-insulation core in between) allow for a quick, thermally insulated cladding of large surfaces. It is of high importance that besides its main framing and sheeting components, Lindab offers a wide range of accessories system as well: the Rainline roof drainage system, the Protectline system for roof safety (snow fences, roof walkways, roof- and wall-ladders), roof ventilation elements, roof foils, self-drilling screws, sealing profiles ensure a perfect design for the tiniest details. In certain cases, the wall structures of complete hall buildings can be realized by using Lindab components and solutions (steel framework structure, roof- and wall-cladding, roof drainage products and the relevant accessories), while in other cases Lindab products can be flexibly combined with structures made from other materials (eg. prefabricated reinforced concrete framings combined with Lindab lightweight roof- and wall-claddings) in order to ensure the best and most economic realization of works. This 15-m wide and 30-m long sports hall of 450 m2, with a high roof pitch suitable to hold gym lesson of elementary schools or secondary educational institutions operating with not more than eight classes (according to the provisions of former Hungarian standards, the MSZ 24203 series); further, it is suited to accommodate a volleyball- and tennis-court in official tournament dimensions. Of course, for the purpose of mass sports and leisure activities, the hall can accomodate handball-, basketball- and indoor footbal courts as well, whose dimensions are less than the official requirements. This 30-m wide and 30-m long sports hall of 900 m2, with a gentle roof pitch and an eaves height of ~10m is suitable to hold gym lessons of elementary schools or secondary educational institutions operating with not more than sixteen classes, or even special needs education with up to eight classes (according to the provisions of former Hungarian standards, the MSZ 24203 series); further it is suited to accommodate volleyball-, tennis- and basketball-court. Of course, for the purpose of mass sports and leisure activities, the hall can accommodate handball- and indoor footbalcourts as well, whose dimensions are less than the official requirements. At the gable end of the hall building a single-storey, lean-to roofed social block with a floor area of ~300 m2 is attached to the building, that serves the social functions adequatelly. It is accommodating rooms for storage of sport equipment and also spaces for personal needs (locker room, bathroom, toilet). Model hall no. 3 Model hall no. 3 presents an example for hall equipped to a high level of standard in a spacious way. The 30-m wide and 48-m long sports hall of 1.440 m2, with flat roof and eaves height of ~12m is suitable to hold gym lessons of elementary schools or secondary educational institutions operating up to twentyfour classes. It is suited to accommodate more volleyball- and tennis-courts, two basketball-courts crossways and even handball- and indoor football-courts longways. The spacious interior allows temporary detachments, even 2 or 3 seperate practicable places. It is suitable for any kind of mass sports and leisure activities and also for organizing events. At the longitudinal side a two-storey, lean-to roofed social block with a floor area of ~430 m2 is attached to the building, that serves the social functions at a perfect level. It is able to accommodate storage rooms, rooms for social needs (locker rooms, bathrooms, toilets, showers), medical rooms, offices, even negotiating and conference rooms. According to these aspects, we sum up here the options offered by Lindab’s product groups. “Mechanical resistance and stability” – the design and construction of framing structures of compliant load-bearing capacity on the long run are ensured by the use of high-strength steel materials and optimized dimensions, as well as our self-developed structural dimensioning tools (charts, softwares). “Safety in case of fire” – There are a number of laboratory tests, standard calculations and qualifications available as regards the fire-protection classes and performance parameters (fire-resistance limit values) under applicable European standards (EN) of Lindab products and systems. By the help of these tools, the required framing solutions or sheeting systems can always be specified for the requested fire safety level. “Hygiene, health and the environment” – The materials of Lindab light gauge steel products, throughout their entire life span, do not contain components, which are harmful to human health or the environment. A mention must be made here that the steel raw material is recyclable, and the minimum quantities of wastes produced in the manufacture and construction works phase does not impose a burden to the environment. “Safety of use” – In connection with this aspect it is worth mentioning that the durability of Lindab steel products is ensured by a multi-layer coating system applied over a hot-dip galvanized surface that ensures corrosion protection. “Protection against noise” – Two major areas should be distinguished in terms of acoustics: sound inhibition and sound absorption. For “sound inhibition” (where the task of the surface structural element in question is to ensure that the lowest possible part of a sound effect generated at one side should be detected at the other side), various Lindab assembled roof- and wall-cladding systems and pre-fabricated sandwich panels are available, with various test results, on the basis of which the required solution can be selected. Where “sound absorption” is prescribed (where the impact of a noise source located at one – generally the inner – side of the surface structure must be reduced for such „receivers” who are located at the same side of the surface structure in question), the application of perforated wall cladding sheets (pierced densely by small-size holes) offers an excellent solution. “Energy economy and heat retention” – For buildings, on of the most important points of view today is the amount of energy they require for the purpose of use (heating and/or cooling, ventilation or other technologies), as this factor has a significant impact on operation costs. From among all the building structures, the thermal insulation capabilities of roof- and wall-claddings are the decisive parameters. The roof- and wall-cladding systems offered by Lindab provide a very wide choice also in terms of thermal insulation levels; the lightweight, thermal-insulated solutions are capable of meeting needs from a slightly tempered one to even a passive-building-level performance, with small spacings between the various solutions. The thermal insulation capability of building elements must always be specified individually, in a circumspect manner, based on relevant needs and prescriptions. “Sustainable use of natural resources” – From this point of view it is important to emphasize that Lindab’s roofing systems (producing especially large areas in case of halls for instance) allow for an excellent opportunity for the use of the various solar systems being on the market (solar collectors for hot water or heating, or electricity generating solar cells). In the case of each different Lindab roof-cladding system (trapezoidal profiles, tile-effect roof sheets, sandwich panels or standing seam roof sheets), pre-engineered accessory system components are available for accommodating and fastening solar components on the roof safely (through load-bearing and watertight connections). Product identification and certificates of conformity As the realization process in the construction industry involves a number of players in most cases (design, production, sales, installation/ construction works, general contracting, and organisation), it is of major importance to ensure the identification of makes and products, and the control of their technical conformity in every phase of a project. Identification of products at the building site is not always easy. For this end, the products manufactured by Lindab are marked by a videojet marking (product type, profile, serial number, date of production, etc.); while certain components are stamped in a raised print by the „Lindab” brand name (e.g. the joining ends of gutters), promoting a clear identification of Lindab products. Product identification is important also to ensure the assignment of products to quality documentations whose release is mandatory by law (ÉME, TMI, CE-mark, Declaration of Conformity).
