Kerteminde Maritime Gardens
Mussels and seaweed are healthy and delicate foods that
everyone can take part in growing in the Kerteminde
Bay.
Kerteminde Maritime Gardens is the name of a new
association. Its purpose is to:
•
Run and develop sustainable maritime gardens in
Kerteminde Bay for growing marine foods such as
mussels and seaweed.
•
Support the development of marine, recreational
areas for the good of the local outdoor life and
tourism.
•
Collaborate with other local maritime initiatives
and activities in the Kerteminde Municipality in
order to promote knowledge on sustainable
exploitation of marine ressources among these the
production of maritime foods.
Everybody is welcome to join the association, whether
you are a resident of Kerteminde or not.
Maritime gardens
A maritime garden is an installation at sea for
growing marine produce such as mussels,
oysters or seaweed. In other words a kind of
allotment or kitchen garden on the open sea.
A unit of The University of Southern Denmark
with base in Kerteminde has done research in
the cultivation of mussels in the Kerteminde
Bay. Their research shows that it is possible within one
season to grow ready-to-eat mussels, so-called mini
mussels.
Our ambition is to establish an installation for growing
mussels and seaweed. The maritime garden will be run
in the style of a common allotment with the members
jointly taking part in the keeping of the garden.
Another ambition of ours is to cultivate the social aspect
of sharing something special as the sea as a larder.
Activity-groups
A number of activity groups has been set up, for the
members to join. Our aim with the groups is to develop
as active an association as possible, where those that
wish to can participate in the activities that interest
them.
