When you round to the nearest dollar,
you are rounding the ones place up or
down based upon how close the cents
that you will drop off is to that amount
or one dollar higher. 50 cents or more
and it rounds up and less than 50 cents
and it stays the same, which is often
said as rounding down.
$48.20. The 20 cents is closer to the 48
than to 49. The rounded amount would
be $48.
$22.05. The five cents is definitely
closer to $224 than to $23.
$49.99. Those 99 cent type of prices are
really popular in stores and in ads. It is
only a penny away from being $50, so
that is what it rounds to.
$0.89 is 50 cents or more, so it rounds
up to a dollar.
The rounded total, or estimate. of the
bill, is $121
Now it is your turn.
