Describe the journey on the
Middle Passage.
GROUP ACTIVITY
• Each student will receive a secondary source/
informational text about the Middle Passage.
• Each group will receive a folder containing
primary sources that also tell the story of the
Middle Passage.
• As a group, spend some time observing the
primary sources.
• Discuss what is happening in each picture or
writing.

• After you have observed and reflected on the
primary documents, read the secondary/
informational text.
• You can take turns reading.
• As you read, look for content that matches the
primary sources.
• If you find content that matches one of the
primary sources, highlight the content and place
the number of the source in the margin by the
highlighted text.

• You will use the secondary source to help you
with your homework.
• For homework, on a separate sheet of paper,
tell the story of the journey on the Middle
Passage. Do not plagiarize but use your own
words.
• You may tell the story from the perspective of
a slave on the journey (first person account) or
just as a narrative written in third person.
HOMEWORK
• Your narrative or journal should contain a lot
of facts you learned from reading the primary
and secondary sources.
• You do not need to cite the content, but do
not copy phrases or sentences (plagiarize).
• For extra points, illustrate the journey in
pictures also.
Growth of Slavery
• Use the tables on the worksheet provided to
determine the growth of the slave population
in colonial South Carolina.
• Follow the instructions and place your pie
graphs and answers in your notebook.
• You will need a calculator!
