This variable should be used at the family level. For 1985 only 'under 1 year' & 'No children' are combined.
Dependent children are all those aged 0-15 and those aged 16-18 who are in full-time education. It is normal
practice to filter on RELHFU = head of family or wifetpartner of head when doing analyses of dependant
children.

This variable is derived from the answers to the following:
-
1
Whether the respondent is claiming unemployment benefit. From 1989 1991 respondents were first
asked whether they attended an Unemployment Benefit Oflice in the last 4 months, then whether
claiming unemployment benefit.
2
If not, whether the respondent is signed on at an Unemployment Benefit office in order to:
a)
to claim supplementary benefit (or income support), or
b)
to obtain credits for National Insurance contributions
This is done so that there is more likelihood that all respondents who would be officially regarded as
unemployed, according to the monthly claimant count, would answer 'yes' to one of these questions.
These questions were designed to be used together and not to provide armrate estimates of the individual
components. Those not claiming benefit, no answer and DNA are normally added together under the label not
claiming benefit

The ethnicity question is not asked in Northern Ireland. In 1984-1991, the LFS sample design had an element
of clustering. Since ethnicity is a characteristic that is particularly clustered in the population, both
geographically and within households, it is subject to particularly high design factors. For this reason many
estimates of ethnicily should not be used for single years data, hut three year averages should be used. The only
estimates where single year data are considered satisfactory are as follows:
Population of working age
Economic Activity rates
Proportions in employment
Proportions unemployed
(to the nearest 1,000),
(to the nearest percentage),
(to the nearest percentage),
(to the nearest percentage)
for the following populations only:
White
West IndianIGuyanese
Indian
PakistadBangladeshi
Otherlmixed
All other estimates relating to ethnicity should be based on three year averages
Ethnic background is based on the respondents own assessment. This question is not asked in Northern
Ireland.

This variable should be used at the family unit level to avoid double counting. When doing analyses of lone
parents variable "relhof = head of family" should also be used as a filter.
From 1989 onwards 'Male head of married couple' has been combined with 'Male head of unmarried couple'
and called 'Male head of marriedko-habiting couple'.

When doing analyses of the unemployed or inactive categoria of this variable care should be taken as these
are based on the Labour Force 0definition ( ie based entirely on activity in the week prior to interview). If
the L O definition is required, as will be the majority of cases, filter on UODEFA = unemployed or
inactive. Care should be taken if doing analyses of those on Government schemes as the types of schemes
varied over the years, it is suggested variable GOVSCH or SCHEME be used.
